Importance of biceps in badminton The role of the biceps are VERY crucial in badminton. You need well developed biceps to pick up shuttles from the gym floor. If you find that you have difficulty lifting those birdies then get thyself to the gym ASAP. 'Wrist strength' is a bit of a misnomer. I believe that the wrist and hands have no muscles of their own. It's all done with tendons from the forearm muscles. I would guess that people that are blesssed with more fast-twitch fibers in their forearm, tricep & shoulder muscles are the ones with the most explosive smashes. It's not a matter of bulk so much as a matter of muscle-type. Some people have a higher % of slow-twitch fibers and other have more fast-twitch. You are somewhat limited by your genetics. Some muscle development of the forearm, tricep & shoulder could help you realize your potential, but your are still limited by the twitch factor.
Re: Importance of biceps in badminton why don't you try explaining this to some of my friends who play for the national team in Canada. Or even Ardi Wiranata, I'm sure they'd like to hear what you have to say regarding your points. Also if you're "you" comments are directed at me in particular I wouldn't rush to judge me so quickly; as nobody here judges other people's skills, we're here to help one another.
No offense intended Not sure why you took offense to my comments. No hostility or judgement was directed at you. The 'you' was used in a very generic sense. The bicep thing was a JOKE in response to an earlier question by kwun. The rest of my previous post was based on my understanding of anatomy and biomechanics. What the coaches say and what the science says are often very different. High speed studies have dispelled the rumors of things like "wrist snap", depsite what Ardi or the national coaches might say. For example, check out the following excerpt from the IBF website... http://www.intbadfed.org/review.htm#BIOMECHANICS
Re: No offense intended Oh ok. Cool. Thanks for clearing it up. Interesting article... now you made me want to look into this more! that's a bad thing cause I don't have too much time right now. I'm drawing up part of my itinerary for the duration of the next 3-4 months  Now I'm looking up articles related to badminton, and physiology... if only my fiance were awake to see what I was doing... she'd literally make sure I would have neither the fast-twitch, or slow-twitch muscles to use for playing anymore
well, more than a year later, here is my latest measurement: R: 26.75cm L: 24cm so yeah. got a little bit larger than before.
interesting forearm R31.5, L29.5 legs R61.5-37,L62.5-37 it is interesting that Mag and Mark have larger legs on the racket side. Is this typical for badminton players? I have left thigh bigger since I was kid. The left leg was my take-off leg. I played handball.
how about measuring the length of your forearm? my left forearm which is my playing side is longer by 1cm than my non-playing side. weird huh?
Re: interesting not sure if it is typical. however, i am not too surprised as the right leg lunge is very often used in badminton.
Although I am left-handed, I sometime play using my right arm too when it's just some practice game or playing against a much weaker opponent. Think that might account for the similarity between the two arms. However there is a bigger difference in wrist size. Forearm: Wrist: R: 31.0cm R: 17cm L: 31.2cm (Main playing arm) L: 19cm
ARM R: 26cm L: 24cm get a good 1cm extra when I tense my arms THIGH R: 58 cm L: 56 cm get a good 2cm extra when I tense up the thighs CALF R: 36cm L: 36cm Oddly, when i tense up the muscles on my calfs, I LOSE a cm each -.-" I was in the highschool track team running 100m dashes, also played b-ball earlier on in school and played community soccer when I was yonger in the midfield position (for those who know the sport, midfielders will need to cover the whole field, especially when the defense on your side is extra crappy). I used to be able to lift a imoperial ton with my legs before i busted my knees. I think this is why my Thighs are huge to the point of almost abnormal (they are almost the size of my toso... which is about 74cm in diameter) does this have anything to do with the muscle/fat ratio?? otherwise, how would one explain the increase/decrease of circumfrence when tensing up the muscles?
Forearm R 25.5cm L 25.75cm Wrist: 15 15 Like jwu said... i liked to play with both arms too. Confuses the heck out of people when u swich mid-rally Most of you guys are pretty huge IMHO i thought asians (and many of us are) are supposed to be small? ... well maybe the whey i just bough will help.
Hey jwu, how come your wrist size is so different? Its mostly bone there so it'll be hard to explain with badminton!
I think it's cuz when you flex your calves, the muscles get pulled UP, and flattens out more. When relaxed, all the muscles "bunches" downward toward the middle, hence making it bigger. If you are kneeing down when you flex, the effect should go away...
actually... I'm not sure if that's an imperial ton... but it's all the weight on the universal machines(the last peice had 9XX on it... so i believe it's 1000 something pounds, or at least close to 1000)... or all the weights (ones that u can move around)my hiughschool had... haha
An imperial ton is 20 hundredweight. A hundred weight is 112 pound. So an imperial ton is 2240 pound. very close to a metric ton...1000kg = 2200 pound
Not really sure how that works either bigredlemon but yeah, my left wrist is a lot bigger than my right. It is very noticeable too. Some kind of birth defect perhaps. Yeah most asians I know are relatively trimmed. My body size is very untypical of asian male I guess. I played football a little bit in high school so that's really the reason for my build. Thigh: Both 61cm Calf: Left :41 cm Right: 41.5cm I have unusually large calves. Think it's from always being on my toes.
