He he... I have done this before! This is how it can be done: Kid 1 write down a random number (R1) and pass it to Kid 2. Kid 2 add his own random number (R2) to the first number and pass the sum only to Kid 3. Kid 3 do the same and pass the new sum to Kid 4. This goes on until Kid 10 added his random number (R10) and a total sum (X1) is obtained. X1 = (R1+R2+R3+R4+R5+R6+R7+R8+R9+R10) The number X1 is then go back to Kid 1 who will now add his Real Salary (S1) to the number, the same process is then repeated until Kid 10 added his Real Salary (S10), we have another sum (X2). X2 = (R1+R2+R3+R4+R5+R6+R7+R8+R9+R10) + (S1+S2+S3+S4+S5+S6+S7+S8+S9+S10) The number X2 is then go back to Kid 1 for the last time and he must now subtract the first random number (R1), he then pass the new number to Kid 2 who will do the same subtraction of his first random number (R2), and so on and so for until Kid 10 substract his first random number (R10). A final number X3 is now available. X3 = (R1+R2+R3+R4+R5+R6+R7+R8+R9+R10) + (S1+S2+S3+S4+S5+S6+S7+S8+S9+S10) - (R1+R2+R3+R4+R5+R6+R7+R8+R9+R10) = (S1+S2+S3+S4+S5+S6+S7+S8+S9+S10) So using number X3 divided by 10 will give you the average real salary for the 10 kids without anyone knowing exactly how much the other kid earns. What about this? (1) 1st kid will write a random number (X) on a piece of paper & pass it to 2nd kid. (2) 2nd kid will add his salary (S2) to that number (X) then write the sum (N1) on another piece of paper & pass it to 3rd kid. N1= X + S2 (3) 3rd kid will add his salary (S3) to that number (N1) then write the sum (N2) on another piece of paper & pass it to 4th kid. N2 = N1 + S3 Repeat this process until the 10th kid has added his salary (S10) to that number (N8) then write the sum (N9) on another piece of paper & pass it back to 1st kid. N9 = N8 + S10 (11) 1st kid will then add his salary (S1) then subtract the random number (X) from the sum (N9) and write the sum (N10) on another piece of paper. N10 = N9 + S1 - X (12) Divide the sum of the 10 kids (N10) by 10, then the mean will be obtained. Mean = N10 / 10
so complicated process. i have an easier one. get a box. have people write their salary on a piece of paper. toss the piece of paper into the box. mix it up a little. take them out and add up the numbers and divide by number of piece of paper (hopefully 10) or in todays world. make a program, everyone goes up to the computer and enter their number. Hit the calculate number at the end, it will do the calculation and empty memory of the numbers. very simple program to implement, maybe like 5 lines of code.
Sorry to mention this, but I think we should: there are only 8 PLANETS in our Solar System now. Pluto is no longer a planet. So 12. question on the last riddle is not quite reasonable...
I would suggest writing the salaries on pieces of paper and mixing them and then calculating the average. This would be the simplest and easyest way. But drowsysmurf suggested this before me. Doing this by equation, I would pick the method which Robin7 mentioned - random number from the first one, then all 9 add their salaries and on the end the first one add his and subtract the random number...
Hmm... ..if i'm not mistaken, i think those negative points are for the answers being submitted late. And since Linus was the 2nd fastest to answer, instead of the 1st one (by govindbn), then he received a -2. And so on and so on... ..haha, yah, i would second that idea!..Just click, click, click and bam-done!!
I like the idea. The thing is who will be computing the sum & the mean? Someone else must do it, otherwise the salaries will be revealed. It's argueable though.
