The champion and runner-up of recent SUI Open Super 300, Sameer Verma and Jan O Jorgensen respectively will be tournament star attraction, other notables names among the particpants are Kashyap Parupalli, 2017 Bitburger Open winner Rasmus Gemke, the well-improved Bulgarian pair Stoeva sisters and defending champion Lamsfuss/Herttrich.
A bit surprised that both CAN Michelle Li and USA Zhang Beiwen are not playing here. For the former, maybe it's because she's participating in the Commonwealth Games starting on 5th Apr, but the latter ?
ZBW has been donning US colours when playing in various BWF events for several years now. If you're mistakingly thinking of the CWG, USA is not a member state of the Commonwealth of Nations.
michelle & beiwen only play this level domestically. it's not worth it for them to travel for such few points & little money at stake. winning it wouldn't change their rankings in any significant manner.
New Orleans,USA, and USA's northern neighbour, Canada. Perhaps not worth the trouble, as you said, if ranking points are immaterial.
Indonesia fields junior squad to gain exposure in international tournament including reigning World Junior Champion Gregoria Mariska and WJC mixed doubles runner-up Kusharjanto/Ramadhanti. Last year champion Lamsfuss/Hertrich were sent packing early by INA teenagers Ramadiansyah/Bandaso. Denmark, India and host France have at least three representatives each in men's singles last sixteen. 2015 World Champ bronze medalist Jorgensen will find Indian hurdle today, Gurusaidutt while top-seed Sameer Verma is expected to pass local favourite Thomas Rouxel.
I tuned in to WS featuring Linda Zetchiri and a chinese player xuefei qu. Actually, i was surprised to see that she was accompanied with a foreign coach. She is from another country but still represents china?
ZBW is now a top10 material, expect her to never participate in a BWF 100 event. PS: I mistook it for New Orleans as well.
But it should be on Badminton europe youtube channel. She is Chinese, but she currently play in France (Rostrenen, 4/5 hours from Orléans I think) and studying close. I think Chinese Federation don't 'support her' (maybe not true, but don't have many informations on this). She is coached by one of Rostrenen coach and/or player. And she actually only does tournament in europe (probably not enough money to travel in asia).
The Chinese born is hoping to become a French citizen soon – she has been living in Britanny (west coast of France) for a few years and studies French. She will soon get married to her French boyfriend who plays in her club of Rostronen. “It’s not so easy to play for France. There is a lot of paperwork and I need to pass a French test. But we really hope it will be possible before the end of the year, because now I don’t have any sparring partners to practice, I don’t have badminton place to play in everyday and I don’t have a coach anymore. I really need more to try to play my best level” she told Badzine. [Source] She was also playing in Austria Badminton League: 1. BundesLiga 2011-2012 for badminton club named ASKÖ Kelag Kärnten 2. 3. ÖBV-A-RLT 2011-2012 for badminton club named ASKÖ Kelag Kärnten She'd ever played twice as double player XD: Qi Xuefei/Yu Xiaoyu (Adidas China Masters 2013) and WD: Qi Xuefei/Ma Xixi (Li-Ning China Masters Superseries 2009).
