    INA chances become slimmer...

Shuttler's Withdrawal Rocks Indonesia’s Worlds Hopes

    Ami Afriatni | August 05, 2011

Indonesia’s already slim chances of taking home a title from the World Championships suffered a huge blow on Friday with the withdrawal of men’s doubles specialist Markis Kido.

On the same day the country’s shuttlers left for London, Markis was taken to Global Bekasi hospital with typhoid.

“The doctor told me [Thursday] that I was hit by typhoid and had to be hospitalized,” Markis told Jakarta Globe on Friday. “I’m sorry, but I have to withdraw.”

The World Championships begin on Monday in London.

Markis and partner Hendra Setiawan were one of Indonesia’s best bets to end the nation’s four-year title drought at the World Championships. They last won a world title in 2007, the same year that Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir claimed the mixed doubles world title.

I see rather disturbing TV pictures of rioting, looting and burning infernos in the London area as a result of the killing of a young man by the police.

I just hope the players, officials and spectators at the Wembley Arena, where the World Championships are now underway, will not be adversely affected and we could still enjoy the matches.

On a more positive note, I heard over TV when Morten Frost was co-comentating with Gillian, that the Chinese men could be defeated just as their women are now not "invincible" as they once were.

Coaches should not give up hope and that they can break China's "dominance".

When Frost coached then Tine Rasmussen (now Baun) to defeat the Chinese women squad progressively, the myth about China's dominance, was destroyed. "It can be done", said Frost.

The best example in this World Championships is the R1 defeat of Chen Long #5 in the hands of lowly Kevin Cordon from an unknown badminton country called Guatemala.

There will be more upsets, I think.
