Badminton: Irish Eyes May Smile Upon Indonesian Championship Shuttlers Jakarta Globe July 20, 2011 Indonesian shuttlers competing in next month’s World Championships may get a chance to fine-tune their game at a training camp in Northern Ireland in the lead-up to the London event. The Indonesian Badminton Association’s (PBSI) secretary general, Yacob Rusdianto, said on Wednesday that the association was offered free accommodation and training facilities in Belfast by Badminton Ireland, but the deal had yet to be finalized. “All this year we have had trouble finding good places for shuttlers to train and acclimatize in Europe before playing in tournaments there,” Yacob said. “Training in Belfast will be a great preparation for the World Championships. We will first send several coaches and shuttlers to survey the facilities before deciding anything. “We still don’t know what Badminton Ireland wants in return for their hospitality, but we warmly welcome their offer.” London will host the championships from Aug. 8-14 at Wembley Arena, which will also be the venue for the badminton competition at next year’s Olympics. Indonesian shuttlers are aiming to end a championship title drought dating back to 2007 in Kuala Lumpur. They won two titles that year, with Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan lifting the men’s doubles trophy and Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir taking the mixed doubled. With men’s and women’s singles in decline, double’s shuttlers will again be Indonesia’s best hope of breaking the title drought in London. Three men’s doubles teams have qualified for the championships, including Markis and Hendra. But a repeat of 2007 is unlikely as they have struggled with knee problems and are yet to win a competition this year. Also competing in the doubles are the pairs of Mohammad Ahsan and Bona Septano, and Alvent Yulianto Chandra and Hendra Aprida Gunawan. “We see that, in term of quality, there’s not much difference among our men’s doubles,” said Christian Hadinata, the men’s double head coach. Liliyana will compete in the championships for the first time with new partner Tontowi Ahmad. She and Tontowi have won three consecutive tournaments in India, Singapore and Malaysia.
Clark targets World Championships spark ESPN staff July 20, 2011 The World Badminton Championships are looming large on the horizon and it is an event Anthony Clark is well accustomed to. But it also a new experience for one of England's most capped players. Clark and Nathan Robertson have cut down on their schedules, with the latter focusing on mixed doubles with his partner Jenny Wallwork. That left Clark on the hunt for a new men's doubles partner and Chris Langridge stepped up to the mark. It is a blend of youth, Langridge being 26, and experience, with Clark now 33. Recent results have been encouraging, most notably helping England to the European Team Championships semi-finals in Amsterdam in February, but they were reliant on a wildcard for the World Championships at Wembley Arena as they sit outside the world's top 50. As such Clark and Langridge will not enter the event as one of the favourites, but Clark feels that local support could prove an inspiration for the England team. -------------------------------------------------------- Full article : http://www.espn.co.uk/more/sport/story/101833.html
Singles shuttlers to train in Belfast for world c’ship The Jakarta Post | Fri, 07/22/2011 8:00 AM While the doubles squad concentrates on its final preparation for the London BWF World Championships at home, four singles shuttlers will head for a three-day training session at the Lisburn Racquets club in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which will also serve as the training site for the 2012 Olympic squad. The four going abroad are men’s singles Simon Santoso and Hayom Rumbaka and women’s singles Adriyanti Firdasari and Lindaweni Fanetri. They will be accompanied by the national singles head coach Li Mao and assistant coach Wong Tat Meng. They depart for Belfast on Aug. 1 and will reunite with the rest of the team in London, two days prior to the World Badminton Championships, held Aug. 8-14. National men’s singles coach Agus Dwi Santoso hoped that the training in Belfast would have the singles shuttlers better prepared. “Hopefully, the singles can better adjust with the climate there and improve their game strategy for the World Championships,” he said on Thursday. Learning from past difficulties in finding a place for athletes to aclimatize before the Olympics, the Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) accepted an invitation from the Lisburn Racquets club for aclimatization training prior to next year’s London Olympics, free-of charge. “The [four] shuttlers will be training there to also see whether the conditions there fit our needs: the building, the wind and the temperature,” PBSI secretary general Jacob Rusdianto told The Jakarta Post, explaining that the training is part of the PBSI’s search for the best place for an aclimatization training camp before the Olympics. “If we are OK with the conditions in Belfast, we will propose the location to KONI [the Indonesian Sports Council]. We might be training there two to three weeks before the Olympics starts [on July 27-Aug. 12],” Jacob added. The doubles squad preferred to stay home to concentrate on their final preparations for the World Championships. “We prefer to optimize training at home because it will be more difficult to find sparring partners for the doubles shuttlers if they train in Belfast. At home, our top national doubles are usually in training programs with their juniors,” the national doubles squad head coach Christian Hadinata told the Post. “Climate is not an issue for the shuttlers, as they have played in Europe many times,” Christian added. Christian said earlier that it was important for the athletes to maintain their daily doses of training during weekdays and even, if possible, during weekends as well. “Missing only a day or two of training can really decrease the shuttlers’ performance,” Christian said. The last time an Indonesian singles shuttler won World Championship gold was Taufik Hidayat in 2005, while the latest doubles triumphs were back in 2007, bringing home two golds with men’s doubles Markis Kido/ Hendra Setiawan and mixed doubles Liliyana Natsir/Nova Widianto. Indonesian Shuttlers Head to Belfast Ahead of World Championships Ami Afriatni | August 01, 2011 Four Indonesian shuttlers departed for Belfast on Monday, hoping a longer stay in the United Kingdom helps prepare them for the World Championships. No Indonesian man has won a world singles title since Taufik Hidayat in 2005, while the women’s drought goes back to Susi Susanti in 1993. London hosts the tournament from Aug. 8-14. Lisburn Racquets Club in Northern Ireland — not Badminton Ireland, as the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) said last month — offered the PBSI the chance to use its training facilities at no cost before the World Championships. The PBSI, which has been looking for a training location ahead of the 2012 London Olympics, jumped to the offer and sent four shuttlers — Simon Santoso, Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka, Adrianti Firdasari and Lindaweni Fanetri — all of whom will play in the World Championships. Head coach Li Mao and singles coach Wong Tat Meng accompanied the shuttlers. --------------------------------------------------------------- Read completely : http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/badm...o-belfast-ahead-of-world-championships/456577
