so many votes for Chandra/Toni yet this thread seems to be almost unattended by the voters. see guys, if you voted for your pair we want to know why. blind fanatism is not really fun at all. :p

I don't think it is as much "fanatism" as it is that they have not gotten much chance to see the other pairs whom are good contenders for this "title". I, myself as an example, picked for the Tony Gunawan & Candra Wijaya because they are, in my opinion, are the best of the current generation since I have seen them play more than I did with other great pairs such as Kim/Park and Ricky/Rexy.

I would say that it is better than if one was to blindly go with the majority.

Ricky/Rexy will be my first choice. They are the reason I started to play doubles. They were monsters in their regime. Not even Cheah Son Kit/Yap Kim Hock could stop them at that time. They were finally taken down by their kouhai/junior, Candra/Sigit. Nevertheless, they are one of legendary pairs out there.

Chandra Wijaya is one of the legends in badminton
He alone is so sharp

But I like Yap Kim Hock's net play =P

Why did Tony and Candra split up in the first place?

I think it's rather difficult to vote on this. In order to do so, a person voting would have to be familiar with all the players in the last 15 years and have watched numerous games of each player, as well as know their track records.

This is no small task. :p

Well, that would exclude those who are only 2 year of age - dink ;)

Candra partnered with Sigit and won the WC in '97 but Sigit was found to violate the doping regulation in '98 and had to sit out for one year. PBSI put Tony and Candra together (for the year '99 and '00). After Sigit came back, he teamed up with Halim for about one year. In the year of 2001, PBSI decided to rearrange the line-up's and therefore you saw the three pairs: Tony/Halim, Candra/Sigit, and Eng Hian/Flandi Limpele.

Thanks for the info Sean. What kind of "doping"? I find that rare in badminton these days.

I don't have the details on hand but some cold syrups and capsules contains the ingredient considered as the illegal materials in old days. I recalled a Romanian girl got her olympic gold medal revoked due to the physian's mistake. I am not very sure if Sigit's case was similar to that or not.
