jasonmichael, glad u remember one of the potential great players. not many ppl do. only de best badminton lovers can appreciate. CHEERS
It's not necessary for people around age 13 to 16 like me to remember someone from the badminton history.. I protest the statement of "remembering one of the potential great players are de best badminton lovers"...
Yap. You were not borned yet. I am sure you will remember the great players from the generations when you started to watch and love badminton.
I'll remember someone from the present now...It's hard to remember someone from the past when you haven't even watched them play
No pair comes even close to Park Joo Bong / Kim Moon Soo. Not only they were very strong in attacking play, but also defensive play. Their defence was almost unbreakable. I watched them playing since the early 80's until they finally retired. I also watched the rest of the prominent double pairs from Park/Kim time till now and having made a performance/consistency comparison among the prominent doubles pairs, the best pair of all is still Park/Kim. Hands down. Absolutely.
Absolutely 2 pair MD that create fantastic achievement, they are: - KOR's Park Joo Bong/Kim Moon Soo (2x World Champ in 1985 & 1991 ; 3x All England Winner 1985-1986-1990 plus Barcelona 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist) - INA's duo R (Ricky/Rexy) (2x World Champ in 1993 & 1995 ; 2x All England Winner 1995-1996 plus Atlanta 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist) That facts describe how strong they are in last 15/20 years...
Totally agree with you!! I remember Park's 1st entrance into prominence, in 1982 AE. As a teenager, he and 1st partner Lee Eun Ku went to semis before they lost to the Scottish pair (who in turn lost to the equally teenaged Sidek Brothers). Only in mid-80s he had Kim Moon Soo for a partner. Yet, unlike other greats, Park could play with anyone and still beat other pairs. Many times, he played with an off-colour partner and still came out tops. Well, unless he was injured himself. His court coverage and trickery (turning defense into attack with one shot) are exemplary. His main rival, Tian Bingyi/LiYongbo were the faster pair, but not as crafty and relies mainly on direct attacks.
Yeah, I remember them too, and expected them to take over from Tian Bingyi/Li Yongbo. From what I heard, Yang Yang said that Zheng Yumin had a heart condition and needed operation (didn't hear anything about swallowed tongue). Huang Zhanzhong continued but did not achieve success with other partners. Before TC1992, Huang/Zheng always managed to beat all other new pairs of that era. Until the TC1992 semis, where Cheah/Soo managed to turn the tables after 5 consecutive defeats. The 2nd game alone was 54 minutes. The following year Zheng Yumin had his health problem.
Sidek Brothers - I suppose if this were about the greatest defensive pair, we can put their names. Without attacking guile their achievements were limited, though they were consistent enough to be placed at least in semis in almost all competitions over 12 years. Cheah/Soo & Cheah/Yap - The greatest Malaysian potential, but limited by Cheah's temper. He's better now as Women's Doubles coach, but the previous MAS WD top pair (before Wong/Chin) quit because of him.
I am also very impressed by his ability of turning defence into offence in just one shot, and that shot seems so natural! He just simply return the smashes to a place where his opponent cannot readily reach. He did it with so much ease and often grace.
My Vote I voted doubles players as follow: 1980 - 1990 PARK JOO BONG/KIM MOON SOO (Kor) RAZIF/JALANI SIDEK (Mas) TIAN BINGYI/LI YONGBO (Chn) GUNAWAN/LIEM SWIE KING @ HADIBOWO (Ina) 1990 - 2000 REXY MANAIKY/RICKY SUBAJGIA (Ina) CHEAH SOON KIT/YAP KIM HOCK (Mas) KIM DONG MOON/HA TAE KWON (Kor) 2000 - 2005 CANDRA WIJAYA/SIGIT BUDIARTO (Ina) JENS ERIKSEN/MARTIN LUNDGAARD (Den) CHOONG TAN FOOK/LEE WAN WAH (Mas) TONY GUNAWAN/HALIM HARIYANTO (Usa) CAI YUN/FU HAIFENG (Chn)
