I got a quick introduction to India Badminton but unfortunately only got 5minutes to chat. A bad coincidence with them having another meeting. I specifically asked them about Indian Badminton League - confirmed to be going ahead. Now there is one thing that did cross my mind. How many players, who are aiming for the Olympics, can they get to play in the Indian Badminton League. It's no problem for the independent players. But those ones supported by their National Association and being groomed for Olympic glory, can they really afford to potentially get injured in an event that is not geared to the primary aim? At 8 months before the Olympics, and a quiet period before the March tournaments, this is a time for rest and 'pre-season training'. Building up strength and conditioning.
Even I feel the timing is wrong. It should be held every year right after WC/Oly like the Chinese Super League. BTW shouldn't we have threads for all major leagues? Like Japan, Indonesia, Axiata etc.
Which badminton equipment company is sponsoring the Purple League? If it is Yonex, then I could see Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei coming because of sponsor's contract. If it is Li Ning, I can't see anybody from China coming and probably not Lee Chong Wei either.
Sorry. Had a cross connection! I should have written "Which badminton equipment company is sponsoring the Indian Badminton League"
JOJ was there last time too. I believe he came after someone got injured. Hope VA and the other ones you mentioned comes this time. Well, the more the merrier, but there are only 6 teams, so perhaps there is a limit to how many star players IBL can accomodate. I hope so too that many young Indians get inspired. They certainly could have timed the event better. But IBL is a fun event anyway, I am sure nobody with continue if there is any injury concern. Unfortunately, even that might not be enough to bring Lin Dan. The one that I really wanted to see though, is the best - Chen Long. That looks nearly impossible.
The timing shouldn't bother much I believe.. With the majors starting with AE is scheduled for march.. It'll be more of lubricating the joints and burning the cals from Christmas and New Year break..
