With the Badminton Association of India getting ready for the second edition of the Indian Badminton League (IBL) from January 2-17, a legal wrangle looms large.

Sporty Solutionz were partners in 2013 and roped in top stars Lee Chong Wei and Taufik Hidayat to grab eyeballs. But differences with BAI saw Sporty Solutionz’s contract terminated in April, who filed a case in Delhi High Court on Thursday to protect Intellectual Property Rights. “We have pleaded to restrict any party from using the name, logo, title or any Intellectual Property associated with Indian Badminton League or IBL,” counsel Sanjeev Kumar said.

The federation says it has no legal obligations. “We’re on the right track. We gave them enough time and wanted to carry on the agreement, but they failed to do so,” BAI president Akhilesh Das Gupta told Express.

    Does that mean......

BAI: "We want you to carry on but drop Yonex and use Li Ning as sponsors"

Sporty Solutionz: "We can't drop Yonex. And your players have their contracts to play in our league" (Perhaps SS signed two or three year contracts - pure speculation)

BAI: (x months later) "OK, we drop you since you can't drop your sponsorship contract and sort it out. You can pick up the pieces"

    ...............

How likely would such a scenario be?

Read on twitter that there are chances Lin Dan could take part in IBL coz Yonex is the equipment sponsor for IBL 2 and They could/would/should convince him.

If Chinese players do not particiapte in IBL then it is going to be their loss and not for IBL which already has enough stars to attract attention. Wish IBL becomes a great success like IPL

the weak point in your point of view is that the Chinese players don't have the autonomy to decide whether they play in it or not.

It's not like cricket where the guys ignored their cricket association to play in IPL and can still earn from cricket afterwards. All Badminton associations hold the registration of each player. If a China Player goes against the China Badminton Association (CBA), then CBA will kick them out and they won't register the player for anymore tournaments. Because a player doesn't hold their own registration, it would be impossible to continue competitive international badminton.

This is why for some countries, you have to ask the Association to release the player to compete in the professional league

I know that Indonesia asked India for players to play in its professional league. That request was declined. So vice versa happened when India asked PBSI.

Have you seen Saina , sindhu , Srikanth and Kashyap playing outside leagues other than IBL?. Somebody said to me that they were called to some of the leagues outside but BAI didn't let them go.

Whether it is the Chinese Badminton Association or the players themselves who are not participating the ultimate loss of for the chinese badminton players. IBL does not lose its popularity by any means beacsue there is already a lot of super powers playing in IBL. Wish IBL go onto become a grand success and help promote the game in a much bigger way. With IBL I hope many more youngsters take up this sport at reach its pinnacle.

I wish those leagues, the Indonesian, Indian, and Chinese, would do a Champion's league as well, the champion of each league meeting each other the following years.

Even in cricket the associations reserve the rights to bench players who prioritise leagues over international games. WICB exercised that openly against Gayle, Bravo, Pollard etc and ECB exercised that covertly against KP. Active non retired players require NOC from their boards in order to participate and KP has been denied innthe past by ECB.

IBL is just as important as IPL, MLB, NFL etc. Popular only in one country. And IBL unlike the others is popular only among a niche segment. The first edition was a ratings and financial disaster for sporty solutions.

thanks for the input though I don't know what those acronyms stand for ??

With Chinese Badminton Association, players rarely come back. Finito.

Hence, just attending one professional league for the sake of money, but losing one's playing career in return carries too high an opportunity cost.

Absolutely!! Oh my bad I remember watching TTY last year.. It'll be great if RI registers.. Many Indians like her a lot.. It'll be even better if young agile and cute AY comes although its highly unlikely to happen.. NBA won't send their players!! What about JOJ, VA, HKV, RO, MZ, CP, JNF and other pro Europeans.. They should come
Also it'll be a treat if IBL the lack of glamour is fulfilled by Line K. and Mads Kolding :p

We would love to have all the top international players playing in IBL but with the absence of few international players it is not going to diminish the value of IBL. The annual IBL is going to be a spectacular event and would promote the game of badminton in a very big way. Hope there would be more youngsters getting inspired from IBL and take up this sport.
