But you'll get super-fit carrying it all around!

I can see myself changing to Canon when that lack of noise reaches the affordable dSLRs, would be a better option then the anti-shake in my Konica Minolta.

For indoor badminton photography, the use of a gray card to set your WB will give you a more daylight colour look, plus the added bonus of the widest tonal range. Or if you prefer the original colour of the inddor stadium lighting just use the reverse side of the gray card, which is white; but this will give you a narrower tonal range. Try both, compare, and use whichever you prefer. Using auto WB is not as good.

I shot these (2) two Badminton Tournaments with a Nikon D200 80-200 DX VR zoom lens at speeds of 320th to 400th of a second. Both gyms had poor lighting so I set the ASA at 3200 speed

    nice.

    ISO1600, f/2.8, 1/500s.

i am starting to have the impression that all gyms in France have really good light while all gyms in the US have really bad lighting.

I'd rather have more commentes about my badminton pictures, but If you want to talk about this one, maybe I could ask this girl to come here and you could interview her :p

By the way, I like this pic too, I tried to do something different than "academic" badminton pictures... tried to capture something else... try to do some kind of artistic photography insead of badminton pictures... ;)

wow - no posts since the 4th july.
i'm taking the plunge in the very near future to buy a decent camera - but need a bit of friendly advice. i've seen a second hand canon 30d body only on ebay that i'm gonna go for (unless it goes up astronomically) (fingers crossed)

tis only the body so i know i need lenses.. since i'm only really interested in using it for badders i'm looking at Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Lens andSigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4 DG ASPHERICAL or perhaps the 28-105mm version - but i'm not sure the sigma ones will fit - does anybody have any experience with the sigma stuff

    thanks for any help

    Neil

if you are going to use it for badminton only, then forget the sigma, it is too slow, the lens starts at f/2.8 when it is 28mm, but increases to f/4 which is useless in most recreational gyms.

instead, spend the money on a 85/1.8, it will be way more useful.

cheers kwun - that sa great help.. might shuffle down to the 20d to save a little more cash - seems to have all the same features as the 30d, can't imagine that i'd need the spot meter, and i can cope with 23 consectutive shots instead of 30.. and a smaller lcd screen - well thats not the end of the world.. it's the lenses that count - and i can always get a better body later on if i like..

    thanks again

    Neil

PS(anything to get away from my dads naff panasonic lz18... )

you seem to be a practical and sensible shopper.

if $ is an issue, just get the 50 first. it will allow you to take really good badminton photos already. i haven't used the 50/1.8 before so i cannot comment on it. the 50/1.4 is lovely. it is one of my main lens when i took pics in China and HK.

then later on you can add other lens, 85/1.8 (or actually 100/2 might be a better choice, esp if you don't plan to get anything longer than that)
