Lin should think seriously to shoot ambitious Olympic dream, following his poor form and endurance, this time succumbed to Kanta Tsuneyama, 21-19 / 14-21 and single-digit scoreline 7-21. Chen Long was ousted surprisingly by Denmark unseeded Rasmus Gemke in two straight-games, 15-21 / 17-21 in their first ever meeting. The reigning Olympic Champion who displayed glimpse of his good form early this year looked so sluggish and quite nervous against the well-determined Gemke. Another seeded players also bit the dust, Chou Tien Chen losing narrowly to last year semifinalist Huang Yuxiang, 14-21 / 21-13 / 22-24. MAS Masters Super 500 gold medalist Son Wan Ho conceded retired to Kenta Nishimoto, 21-23 / 5-14. Seventh seed Anthony Ginting couldn't pass Ng Ka Long who had better tactic to outmaneuver the fast-paced Indonesian. Danish number one Viktor Axelsen is stretched into full distance by Sameer Verma, dropped opening set 16-21 before took next two games, 21-18 / 21-14. Top-guns Kento Momota, title-holder Shi Yuqi and Indian ace Srikanth Kidambi secure last sixteen spot. SINDHU, INTANON FALTERED Indian number one Pusarla Sindhu was far from fine form yesterday, had big problem to balance Sung Ji Hyun patient style. Too many errors, lack of accuracy contributing her defeat here despite the Olympic silver medalist seized the momentum to save three match points, 17-20 to 22-20. But the consistency has gone in deciding game while the Korean seems composed to implement and dictate her own rhythm. Ratchanok Intanon also experienced gruelling match and couldn't make it at the end, sent packing prematurely by Chen Xiaoxin, 23-21 / 22-24 / 14-21. Other contenders march on to second round, Tai Tzu Ying, Nozomi Okuhara, Akane Yamaguchi, Saina Nehwal and Chen Yufei. China and Japan have guaranteed quarterfinal berth in this departement, Okuhara versus Sayaka Takahashi and Chen XX against 2012 winner Li Xuerui. MINIONS FIZZLED OUT A huge disappointment for Indonesian fans following the unexpected setback by their hotshots Gideon/Sukamuljo. 2017 World Champions Liu C/Zhang N have studied the Minions very well, anticipating their fast furious attack with very solid defense and excellent disguising placement to confuse defending champions several times. Two Indonesia men's doubles pair stay in fray, Alfian/Ardianto and the high-reputable Ahsan/Setiawan keep INA chance alive to extend domination in this category. An upset also saw second seed Li JH/Liu YC found exit door, lost to their younger teammates He JT/Tan Q in thrilling encounter, 18-21 / 21-18 / 24-22. KOREANS DID IT AGAIN Chang YN/Jung KE did their mojo to tackle one of Japan leading ladies the Olympic Champions Matsutomo/Takahashi in tight contest, 21-17 / 10-21 / 21-19. An intriguing second round duel will pit the World Champions Matsumoto/Nagahara and the drakhorses Kim SY/Kong HY, one more Korean representatives Lee SH/Shin SC will up against Chinese youngsters Li WM/Zheng Y. On top-half of draw, all four seeded pairs are still intact and most likely to fulfill last eight scenario, Fukushima/Hirota meet Stoeva sisters while Polii/Rahayu are slated to face Chen QC/Jia YF DEFENDING CHAMPIONS SURVIVED Watanabe/Higashino had to dig deep before step up to next round, defeated Danish combination Christiansen/Pedersen, 20-22 / 21-23 / 21-14. Incidentally all seeded pairs at lower half draw have stern test to overcome their rivals, second seed Wang YL/Huang DP losing opening game against Tan KM/Lai PJ then Chan PS/Goh LY had scary escape that ended 22-20 winning over Hoki/Nagahara and home favourites Ellis/Smith made great comeback in trailing behind to turn the tables, 12-21 / 21-19 / 21-19. England have two more mixed doubles representatives who facing each other today, Adcock/Adcock and Lane/Pugh. Country representatives in R2. 17 - CHN 14 - JPN 8 - INA 7 - DEN 5 - THA, MAS 4 - KOR 3 - ENG, IND, TPE, HKG 2 - GER, RUS 1 - USA, IRL, FRA, BUL
I noticed Chen Xiaoxin was actually up as much as 18-9 in G1 before losing on deuce, 21-23, but she managed to scrape through G2, 24-22, and in the decider she even swept Intanon aside with an emphatic 21-14. Somewhat surprising but glad to see her performing thus, esp in view of how she had to retire the previous two weeks' tourneys in the opening rounds for unknown reasons (probably due to illness rather than injury, I suspect). However, not a good idea she has to take on her senior teammate, Li Xuerui, next, as I would like to see how far both of them can progress here.
Endo/Watanabe has Jeremy Gan as their coach, while Goh/Tan has Chew Choon Eng as their coach, is going to be battle of wits there...
Wait, doesn't Jeremy Gan only coach JPN XD? Reony is still coaching JPN MD until the end of this month.
Last year, when Chen won Tai Tzu Ying, I can see her potential. I see her potential is bigger than HBJ or CYF. In the future, she can be a star.
I wonder how is their winter training. Both CL and LD skipped CBSL to undergo winter training which ended last month. To have both of them lose early to the less fancied opponents is clearly a disappointment. I don't know what method that will work for them in order to regain their top shape.
I hope Gemke can keep his winning streak, if beating CL yeaterday and cannot win today it will be a waste.
