Since 1993 edition, Arena Birmingham (previously The Barclaycard Arena, The National Indoor Arena) once again will stage top-notch action of world’s best players to personify its tagline, badminton greatest show. FIRST TIME EVER Reigning World Champion Kento Momota is touted to carve new history, becoming first Japanese MS player to nail All England crown. Entering the new year with modest performance in back to back MAS & INA Masters Super 500, the lefthander is just back in winning track to nail GER Open Super 300 gold medal, a nice warming up to write high note in Birmingham. Defending champion, the ups and downs Shi Yuqi has very tough path to replicate last year triumphant, started from the beginning to face the in-form Anders Antonsen. The Olympic Champions 30 years old Chen Long (two-time winner) and 35 years old Lin Dan (six-time winner) complete Chinese quest in this category. European champion Viktor Axelsen is another top contender as Denmark MS has long tradition in All England history, Peter Gade is the last Danish MS who won AE in 1999. China and Denmark are tied to win MS title, 20 times each for All England successful. The crop of notable participants like Son Wan Ho, Chou Tien Chen, Anthony Ginting, Srikanth Kidambi, Anders Antonsen will enhance title contention fiercely. A STATUS QUO? World number one Tai Tzu Ying performance gives a glimpse of worrisome considering her retirement and early exit in last two BWF World Tour that she participated. A big question whether the Taiwanese star could emulate China’s top player Xie Xingfang All England hat-trick who did it in 2005-2007. No less than six China ladies fill WS line-up, the most number of any nations including their arch-rival Japan. In last 12 months, China is trying hardly to regain their glorious days through a bunch of upcoming youngsters who taking part BWF tournaments intensively and having reasonable result despite still waiting to produce giant leap. In 2019, WS constellation is not changed significantly, Tai, Ratchanok Intanon, Pusarla Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, and two Japanese aces Okuhara-Yamaguchi are among strong candidates to eye All England podium. Chen Yufei is China best bet mathematically to meet the expectation and ends five-year waiting in this annual badminton prominent event. HAT-TRICK MISSION The unstoppable “Kevin-Marcus” aim hat-trick mission, the last time men’s doubles pair who did this fantastic feat were their predecessors, the legendary pair TjunTjun/Johan Wahyudi back to 1970’s era. Indonesian incredible duo begin 2019 with great start, nailed back to back Super 500 titles in Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, their calibre practically is one level above over other contenders including closest rival, the reigning world champion and world number two Li JH/Liu YC. Former champion, the famous doubles specialist Lee Yong Dae (2008, 2012 winner) will make his return to Birmingham, with current partner Kim Gi Jung. 2019 edition also will mark farewell tournament for two-time winner Boe/Mogensen as a pair, Mathias Boe will build up new partnerships with Mads Conrad Petersen while Carsten Mogensen will try to his luck with Mads Pieler Kolding in next tournaments. JAPANESE FORTE Danish veterans Juhl/Pedersen scored huge upset to top All England podium last year, tackled two Japanese pairs en route to win the coveted title. Not many pairs could challenge current women’s double juggernaut, Japan who’ll be represented by six combinations in 120th edition, five of them are drawn in lower-half of draw, leaving world number one and last year beaten finalists Fukushima/Hirota on top-half against major stumbling block Indonesians Polii/Rahayu en route to finale, the latter must clear China number one Chen QC/Jia YF at last eight. The resurgence of Du Y/Li YH and Kim SY/Kong HY lately should pose formidable challengers who capable to upset the favourites. THE UNFINISHED BUSINESS A highly-favoured Zheng/Huang collapsed on All England finale 2018, couldn’t hold their nerves against the underdogs Watanabe/Higashino, after suffered this shocking losing the mighty Chinese duo show tremendous development to sway World Championships & Asian Games gold medal plus several top-tier BWF World Tour titles and had incarnated to quite invincible combination at the moment. All England is certainly on their top priority in throphy cabinet completion towards Tokyo 2020 paramount goal. Alongside with Wang YL/Huang DP mixed doubles always be China biggest prospect in all major tournaments. Chen is now retired. Wang is currently partnered with Lee Yang.
The first INA player to play today is Gregoria. She will face NO today. Although I think that it is still "too early" for her to beat NO, I hope that she can gain valuable experience by facing top players and fight as hard as she can. She already lost twice to NO, but these two matches were ended up in rubber games.
This time difference is killing me.. especially with all live stream available. How am I going to sleep
Im in amsterdam heading paris tonight debating if i should watch PsG vs MU , cant wait for AE though the tension is just palpable after 5 weeks tournament off. The most prestigious indeed
>WHO ARE YOU SUPPORTING? None of the players depicted in the picture. I am assuming this picture represents who is popular in the UK at the moment??
hey guys here I am again my greetings to all my friends . excited to be back And as usual all my favs r there SYQ PVS FUKU/HIRO etc Currently watchin GMT vs NO have to say I'm pleased with gmt's play in this tourney. Just lil stupid errors and that same attitude in game 2 is what I believe gona make her lose the game..she was leading but now has given the game into the arms of NO.
Despite ranked not far apart, hard to see GMT stuns NO.. The only indonesian upset i remember is when Ahsan/Rian ( ranked what 50?) beats seeded 1 Li/Liu.
I think they are reusing lots of posters from 2018. Huge LCW banner is still shown in the competition hall.
