Didn't Lee Zii Jia beat Loh Kean Yew once before?
I agree these two are dangerous to MAS players though.

Serving NS will do them no good. Shouldn't SBA help them defer. Badminton pro life is short.

Agree it is a disadvantage for the brothers to break their training during NS. Let's hope they can adapt well and use the NS stint to become physically and mentally fitter. They can no longer remain as juniors and must be prepared to advance to the senior ranks and challenge the world-class players. The Olympics should be their ultimate goal.

Therefore good luck guys and make the best use of your youth.

that's why the Sporean parents always ask the children to go for their studies rather than full time sports....
they can play and train, but when they reach a certain age, then they have to rely on something to make a living....this is the age old issue facing everyone and not everyone are born into a rich family that can support his/her children passion.
I hope the Spore association can do more for the players and continue to support them after they end their playing careers...
I see we have this big hall, nice facilities, all top notch and clean air con halls for training and all that, but when it comes to the "software", the so called treatment of, is really cannot make it!
hope and wish for changes by the sba management and coaches....set a pathway for the players...

yeah, the past 1-2 decades clearly show SG is good in producing hardware only. software depends on outsiders.

IMO, there is also a larger issue of the employment frame work. Many jobs here (especially office jobs) requires a basic education qualification (in general, minimally GCE 'O' levels).

If one wishes to pursue a full time career in sports over the normal academic path. There could really be an issue of seeking employment after sporting career. Even if the association steps in to provide end-career support, i wonder how much can they help. Perhaps not in job seeking, maybe financial assistance to go for studies / skills training and obtain relevant qualifications.

Unless of course they wish to pursue an entrepreneurial path. But then again, starting a business is risky and the results uncertain.

Given all these factors and the practicalities/realities of life, it is little wonder why bread is often chosen over passion. Especially for the average SGeans.

I think the Singapore Sports School also prepares its graduates to pursue higher education in sports-related and other subjects to enable them to pursue a professional career after sports. Arrangements have been made to link up with local tertiary institutions and universities overseas.

Top athletes who are prepared to study have been given financial assistance to train and study overseas like the swimming Quah siblings, Joseph Schooling and other prominent national swimmers who have graduated and contributing to our sports scene. Ang Peng Siong being one of them.

KUALA LUMPUR — Penang-born badminton player Loh Kean Yew has no regrets switching allegiances to Singapore.

Kean Yew, who now holds Singaporean citizenship, put up a strong fight before going down to Malaysia's Soong Joo Ven in three sets in the men's team event semi-final at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017) on Wednesday night (Aug 23).

Kean Yew, who made his Sea Games debut for Singapore at the 2015 edition, said he is not looking back.

"I do not regret this decision. They (Singapore) have given me all the support I needed since I continued my studies there when I was 13," said the 20-year-old, after his match on Wednesday.

"I don't deny that my coach in Malaysia had taken care of me and developed my skills; however, I have long studied and adapted to life in Singapore."

Kean Yew's brother Loh Kean Hean, who is two years older, is also part of the Singapore badminton team at KL2017 and had partnered Terry Hee in the men's doubles. NEW STRAITS TIMES

Unfortunately our teams and players cannot match those from our badminton-strong neighbours like Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. I guess it will take a long while more for us to close the gap.

Even though LXY never played a single game, she still part of the SEA Game Team.[IMG]
