Kids this small should not train so physically to lob or clear to the baseline. If they train up the correct technique and not on the strength, it will be good enough. Their strength will come naturally as they grow bigger. Even if they lost to the stronger(older) kids, it is not as important as learning the skills, footwork. Kids lobbing so well is not a good thing; it may be acquired through hard training thereby risking pre-mature injury.

If you happen to drop by early evening at the Assumption English School at Singapore's Upper Bukit Timah, you'd see two 9-year-old kids (a boy and a girl) effortlessly hitting baseline to baseline clears with consistent accuracy. :)

In fact, the girl can clear much farther than the boy.

The amazing thing is that they are skinny kids.
If they have any muscles, they simply aren't visible. :)

They are former Singapore national player Tan Eng Han's students.
And he's someone who doesn't endorse or believe in weight-training. :)

and about the 9 year old girls clearing that far, you know what they say:
There is NOTHING chinese people cant do.

    Assuming The Worst?

Who said anything about 'overzealous parents and coaches' or 'pushing' or 'being pushed' or 'overuse'?
Why must you assume that these kids are being forced to do this?

No one is pushing or overusing or being overzealous with these kids.
In fact, it's like family time... the parents usually play a few closing games with them.

This is why I suggested a visit to the place... you couldn't see a happier bunch of kids.
I guess it's either that you have, er, a jaundiced eye  or that things are not quite similar in your neighbourhood

Like the saying goes: 'Why fix something that ain't broken?' :D

Since you quoted me, I'd have to assume that the reply was directed at me as well. :)

And if you were to take a moment to reflect, you'd see who's the sensitive one here

    hi,

i fully agree with the senior, the strength part wil come later. learn the right basic and rite technique is essential in the early years. (in any sports) looks like the koay senior has got the right concept so far. no point hitting lob to baseline with wrong techniques.

most importantly , try to uphold the enthusiasm and fun in his game now. that would drive him forward.

pls keep us update on your kid's achievement and progress. good luck and we wish clarence the best.
