Being every year now...makes it seem just like any other tournament. I wish they return it to every 3 years, makes it special. Any other thoughts?

PS. I search the threads, i didn't see any other person talking about it, if this is redundant pls redirect. thanks

You are quite right V1lau, but I think this would give players more chances at the WC ;) :)

BTW, I thought it was every 2 years...

I think the WC should be held once every four years, such that we only have a 7* event only once every two years, we have the Olympics one year, then WC two years later, then Olympics two years later etc. This is getting ridiculous, can you tell me any other sport where their World Championships is annual? I really don't think so. Whose idea was this anyway? If I were to be a professional badminton player, I would also be thinking 'I lost this year because I was slacking, whatever, I can always come back next year.'

Before the current system it was every 2 years, but before that it was every 3 years. I like the odd number of years inbetween tournaments, would make it more distinct from other world championships. I agree that player can now slack since they will have so many oppurtunities to win it.

badminton is a little bit different as the life span of a player is short. Thus I think 4 years would not be appropriate and 2 years would be the way to go to make the title more prescious.

I think gymnastics and figure skating has their WC annually? I could be wrong though. If I am right, then I think the reason is for such sports, the career for the players are rather short, a more frequent WC can give the players more chances to perform during their peaks.

I believe that the new system of doing it every year is good for the sport. There is no single player who monopolized the championships. We can see what a difference of one year can make to TH.

I agree that 2 years is the best. Gymastic and skating held every year beacuse they do not have regular tournament like badminton do

I disagree with it being good for the sport because i believe it decreases the value of winning a world championship. World championships are meant to be a highlights in ones career, not just another win. I think this is a clear case of having less is more. Not everyone is suppose to win a world championship, when not everyone can win they will work harder and be more focused (usually), thats why I like the original tri-annual world championship but a bi-annual is fine too.

All 6 star Tournaments (All England, Malaysia Open, Hong Kong Open, China Open, Japan Open) is as good as a World Championship. So actual fact we have about 5 World Championship every year. Worst there is also the Olympics in 2010.

..hehe, if they can hold the Olympics in 2010, i'm sure there will be more athletes "eager" to or "less eager" to prepare for that..;):)

Actually the All England & Malaysian Open are 4* tournaments while the Japan Open is a 5* tournament.

I believe it is the prestige and the history behind a tournament that make it more special than the others.

That is also why people tend to remember who was the the previous All Englang and World Championship winners than any other Opens winners.

Compare to other individual racket sports (tennis and table-tennis for example), the peak of a badminton player carrer is strangely short.

A lot of sports have annual World Championships, especially sports that can have a tournament in the span of one week, and don't need a qualification tournament. Badminton happens to fall right inside this category.

For me, I am divided between having an annual WC except Olympic years (3 times in four years) and once every two years (2 times in 4 years).

It is not strange. Badminton is much more physically demanding than tennis or table tennis.

I think some poeple put too much importance on the * rating of tournaments. Malaysia Open, Hong Kong Open, China Open, Singapore Open and etc may have higher * rating and money prizes but they lack the symbolic importance of the All England, WC and Olympics. I'm pretty sure most top players would rather win an AE than Malaysia Open or China Open...

Yeah, agree with you. For most players, it is not the ranking that counts, but the title and the prestige; the immortality that it brings.

On another note, it is arguable that tennis has 4 world championships a year.

Ahh, but they are on grass, clay, hard court and indoor, and they said they are different! ;)

Perhaps badminton could have one World Championship for regular indoor and one for outdoor! Afterall, there are a lot of people out there still think badminton is an outdoor, courtyard, pinic game! LOL! :D :p
