I only spent half a day in Singapore this time, visiting my brother and 2mainland and one Singapore cousin sisters, with lunch at the British Club, and visiting the Orchid garden. After that it was back to Johor Bahru with another brother, food and more food, and then the AC. As a matter of fact you can ask Jug8man, a native of Kota Kinabalu, on my opinions about the food there. He may disagree but I doubt it. For the coming WC in KL BC members should try a famous Ko Pi Tiam (coffee shop) in Jalan Campbell, the Yuet Kee coffee shop. I would not comment on the food quality there, because I eat free there. The owner is Jack Lee, his son Mervin, and they are distantly related to me. You can also arrange with Jack to ask him to call up the earlier pioneers of badminton called the Thundering smashers (Teh Kew San era) to join you chaps for a cup of coffee or tea and about the history of Malaysian badminton. Just mention my name for the arrangement. As for myself no more hawkers food. I will get together with another two of my small circle of best friends to play a few sessions of badminton-they will probably get two of my Vectran racquets as gifts from me. One of them will also try to persuade his "gambling" kaki (stock market) Tan Aik Huang and Moo Foot Lian to meet with me and have a hit or two. But I understand Aik Huang has vowed to have nothing to do with badminton anymore.
Off topic-Sounds good, sounds good.. .. ..alright, alright.....Too bad you didn't spend a bit more time in S'pore and try some of their delicacies..I'm sure if you'd called up Loh, he would've met & whisked you away for a tour of S'pore in a heart-beat..hehe Anyways, yeah, hopefully and we wish if you'll join us chaps later during the WC;don't be a stranger . If not to join for the get-together, maybe just swing by and say "Hi"..
If the food in Ko Pi Tiam is not free how do you rate their food? Btw since you are from HK, what restaurant or place that you can recomend that serve the best based on your years of experience eating there?
If any of you do visit the Yuet Kee coffee shop please do not tell Jack or the others in the shop about my opinions of hawkers food in Malaysia and Penang. If you spill the beans I wll get dirty looks from them when I meet them again. I may also have other relatives saying what an ungrateful guest I have been. I have had considerable experience with food in Singapore, from the old days when I visited my sales boys in Singapore and the infrequent visits I make now. I think the food in Singapore is no better than in Malaysia. The Hokkien Mee and the coffee there are poor variations of those in Malaysia. Even the Indian or Mamak restaurants in Malaysia are sub standard now compared with the old days. The reason is mainly due to the difficulty in importing quality Indian cooks from India. Those Indian cooks born and trained in Malaysia do not know how to cook real Indian food. For example, the average roti chenai there is very poor. For those in Kota Kinabaru-Jug8man can try this out and report back-go and try a roti chenai with dalh from the 24 hrs Indian restaurant near the Hotel Holiday at Segama Comlex, and then compare it with all the other Indian restaurants in town. The others serve rubbish dalh that taste more like water.
Off topic-Haha, very amusing.. .. ..don't worry, we'll just tell them, taneepak thought the hawkers' foods tasted "deliciously different"..hehe taneepak, all i've got to say is, you've got very high standard of taste(which is great, i may say)... But it seems like from what you wrote above, you were expecting to taste some delicious foods, or at least expecting the same taste as before, but ended up being disappointed..hehehe
For wontan noodles there are two restaurants on Hong Kong island and one in Jordan, kowloon. I cannot remember their names but they all sound like Mak Ngan Kei or Mak Yee Kei. There is another one in Jordan that is less good, but at half the price, it is very good value for money. For cheap and good food, try those stores that sell barbecued pork, char siew, chicken, etc with rice at the front of the shop with a table or two at the rear of the shop, in Mongkok. There is a hotel in Mongkok that is a favourite of Malaysians, Singaporeans and Philippinos, and from this hotel you can go on trying the various barbecued pork, chicken, ducks shops. For dim sum, for the very best go to the Penisular hotel. Nothing beats it. It is expensive but the dim sums are out of this world. If you have not eaten dim sum at the Penisular you will never know how impossibly good dim sums can be. There are also a few Lei Yuen restaurants, one in Mongkok and another one in Yau Ma Tei, that serve excellent food. They have a branch in Singapore but the high prices there put it beyond the reach of many. Another high class restaurant is the Fook Lam Moon. Or you can try the inexpensive Yeung Kei Siew Chow Wong in Shum Shui Po, 89, G/F, Kwai Lum street, a place where hong Kong politicians frequent. I have a friend who runs a family restaurant for private guests in Hong Kong, but the prices are high and the quality is very good. He used to work for me as a computer manager. But the best seafood is at the Port View restaurant in Kota Kinabalu. The key to the excellent quality is the high purity and unpolluted taste of the fish there. In Hong Kong and Malaysia most fish taste polluted, some so bad that you can taste kerosene. In Hong Kong the best fish can only be found in expensive restaurants. The above are from my own experience.
Off topic-Alright, i think... ..we've found the get-together place for the upcoming WC ...ants, please place a reservation at the Port View restaurant..But wait, Kota Kinabalu is on the other side from KL??:crying: *Btw, maybe other HKers can chime in or confirm taneepak's recommendation??..maybe even our own kwun can chime in??..whaddaya say, kwun??
I agree completely with TaneePak regarding Peninsular's Dim Sum!! They are really out of this world.. and more money out of my pocket too.. but really they are delicious and taste great. The only dim sum that had a similar taste is in a restaurant in London which i've tried 2 years ago. Forgot the name but they are equally good.
According to Hong Kong food experts the signature dishes in Hong Kong are the humble barbecued pork (Char Sieu) and chicken, and they are available everywhere in HK. About the very good dim sums in London, that is news to me.
Off topic-Hmmm... ...or we can take a boat, together, and go there?? .. Anyways, i've already told ants to make a reservation in KL instead of at Port View restaurant..

No problem, if INA players are playing non-MAS players n vice-versa, we can merge back into one .....
