Agree with the string bed in general, but the missing gap, with its location, will alter the vibration and concentrate the force in the supposed sweet spot.Mechanically speaking, less strings means the string bed gets a bit softer. My own personal feeling is that it doesn't really change anything much, nothing you couldn't achieve with dropping the (cross) tension 3-5%.
Kinda like shoe laces. If you skip lacing in a pair of those holes
