Waking up to reading this on Saturday morning just left a bad taste in my mouth for the whole day: http://o.canada.com/2012/08/02/lets-be-honest-badminton/#0803-oly-arthur-badminton665-jpg I know we are used to people making the offhand comments badminton from time to time, but It really seemed like this guy was just treating our sport like a joke. I feel sorry for Bruce and Li for being included in this article. I feel it's a slap in the face for anyone who loves this sport. I emailed this so called "journalist". Maybe more of us should too.
The author's details: National Post barthur@nationalpost.com twitter: bruce_arthur Truly misguiding article. I will chip in later.
I think you are being hypersensitive. It's actually not that bad of an article. What specifically in the article to you object to?
Look, if this was an article in a local paper about a local tournament, then it would be easier to just brush off. But don't you think with waaaaay more people being curious about what's going on in Badminton especially after the recent scandal, that this article was just in bad taste? I mean it's almost making a joke out of Bruce and Li. If you think I'm hypersensitive, how do you feel about that closing sentence in his article: "They took badminton seriously so that the rest of us didn’t have to"
Any worse than this one? Lots of bad press from the incident. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/olympics/14180367-777/god-forbid-a-badminton-scandal.html
Again, I don't think it's as bad. That was mainly talking about the scandal in general. The main portion of the article I posted was focused on Bruce and Li, and their second chance at winning a medal. But the off handed comments from the writer take the focus away from the ladies. ps: Man having a combo team with a name like like Bruce and Li is a marketer's wet dream.
So how is that the responsibility of the journalists. Are there any facts presented in the article you object too? Hardly a shocker given the ladies are from Canada and it is a Canadian newspaper. Hardly, his so called off hand comments touch on the circumstances by which the ladies ended up playing for the bronze and the fact that badminton is generally ignored by the average North American. Pretty hard to dispute either isn't it? Big deal. Hardly offensive or distracting, though a bit of an stretch on the marketing value of the moniker.
Oh, plus you were responding to my response on the other article that was posted....I just realized that lol.
Yes it is my opinion sorry it bothers you so much. As far as opinions go it's hardly an extreme one. I merely asked what specifically in the article was so bad that you need to label it "offensive" which is a bit over the top. Chicken. If that's the case why say anything? Don't go away mad, just go away..... quietly preferably.
Can you pls quit the cyber-bullying? You two have a difference of opinion - fine. But don't start insulting people.
Actually, I do have to thank you though. Your response left a worse taste in my mouth than the article.
This is the reason why we cannot produce any good players. People here in North America just don't take the sport seriously.
Agree. Don't know if you follow the NBA, but if you want controversial, you should read the Forbes article on Jeremy Lin calling him the dumbest Harvard grad ever. The writer certainly got his 15mins of fame
http://www.forbes.com/sites/randalllane/2012/07/18/jeremy-lin-may-be-the-dumbest-harvard-grad-ever/ Even better than the article itself are the reader comments afterwards.
I am personally quite alright with the article from Canada. No big deal. He's basically just saying badminton is obscure in his part of the world. Fair enough. But the one from Chicago ... let me quote: That's just speaking from plain ignorance and jingo-ism. Anything you play must be skillful and what others played aren't.
