Two back-up pairs selected to play in Korean Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Two back-up men's doubles pairs – Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Lin Woon Fui and Ong Soon Hock-Tan Bin Shen – have been selected for the Korean Open from Jan 25-30 in Incheon City. But a third pair for Malaysia will be decided after a trial on Thursday.

Yesterday, the national doubles chief coach Yap Kim Hock said he would conduct a special trial for world junior champions Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How, Gan Teik Chai-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, Lok Chong Hong-Ong Soon Chiang and Jack Koh-Tan Zhao Rong.

Two other pairs – Choong Tan Fook-Chew Choon Eng and Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat – will stay home to sharpen their skills. Their international assignments will begin with the All-England in March.

wat about their singles? and if kkk stays, that means kkk/wpt pairing in mx will not play either, so sad , i kinda like them

Who makes all these foolish decisions on behalf of Malaysian badminton?

Would they not be better off spilling blood and tears in a real tournament than at home, whilst also risking injury??

For every tournament that they skip, the points available for qualification also reduce..

Considering that this is one of the very few tournaments ranked more than 5*, I agree with you. I can understand why they may want to rest KKK, but at least Choong Tan Fook/Chew Choon Eng's partnership should be blooded as much as possible.

However, this is only for doubles. We don't know about singles yet.

WITH the senior shuttlers focusing on the All-England Championships in March, the BA of Malaysia (BAM) will put their faith in the back-up shuttlers for the US$250,000 (RM950,000) Korea Open in Incheon on Jan 25-30.

Which means Lee Chong Wei and Wong Choong Hann, who competed in the Copenhagen Masters last week will skip the event while Hafiz Hashim’s place in the Korean tournament will only be confirmed tomorrow.

So far, back-up players Yeoh Kay Bin, Kuan Beng Hong and K. Yogendran have been included for the six-star tournament. National doubles coach Yap Kim Hock has also left out the top two pairs of Chew Choon Eng-Choong Tan Fook and Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat as he wants them to be well-prepared for the All-England Championships which begins on March 8.

In their absence, Kim Hock will rely on the much-improved Fairuzizuan Tazari-Lin Woon Fui, Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock and Zakry Latif-Gan Teik Chai.

"I want the top pairs to focus on the All-England. We need to be selective when it comes to tournaments and also need better preparation when playing important events," said Kim Hock.

"The back-up pairs will get the opportunity to gauge their performance and also improve their ranking by playing in the Korea Open.

"It will be more on quality than quantity for our players as they cannot perform well by competing in too many tournaments."

A hectic schedule at the end of 2004 was identified as one of the main reasons why the players had to skip the Korea Open. Between October and December alone, there were six grand prix tournaments — Denmark, German, China, Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia Opens — and the Copenhagen Masters, an invitational tournament. Almost all the senior players competed in these tournaments.

But from now on, BAM will be more selective.

The Korea Open will be followed by the German Open on Feb 28-March 5 while the All-England will be held on March 8-13. The Swiss Open in Basel will be the third tournament (March 15-20) on the European circuit.

However, Kim Hock will probably opt for his players to compete in only two of the three with All-England the priority.

Women’s doubles pair Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui have also been left out as they have been competing non-stop.

Pei Tty was also involved in the mixed doubles with Kien Keat in four of the six grand prix tournaments at the end of last year.

Squad for Korea Open: Men’s singles (confirmed): Yeoh Kay Bin, Kuan Beng Hong, K. Yogendran.

Doubles: Lin Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan Tazari, Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock, Zakry Latif-Gan Teik Chai.

Women’s doubles: Ooi Sock Ai-Mooi Hing Yau, See Phui Leng-Fong Chew Yen.

Mixed doubles: Fairuzizuan Tazari-Ooi Sock Ai.
