    I still do not understand.

if intramuscular administration of dexa is not allowed even for out of competition (unless you got a TUE), why would you want to test for the presence of dex in the 15 Aug sample?

If dexa is indeed present in the 15 Aug sample, that would suggest they administered dexa intramuscularly on 17 July. isn't that right?

According to the sponsors, people suspect that the dexa was injected by the doctor, see post by eagle #10921..

BTW, as an aside, if one wishes to apply for a TUE, one should do so 21 days in advance.

Are we talking about to re-test the sample B of the Aug 15 test that passed with no banned substance found out of competition? Or just to re-exam the test results?

    If so, by whom?

Too many posts got me confused.

They are testing the "B" sample of the Aug 15th test to determine if it was negative to help the cause. But the substance can be reintroduce after Aug 15th.

World badminton No.1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei's B sample has tested positive for dexamethasone, threatening the career of one of Malaysia's greatest sportsmen.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will make an official announcement in a press conference at 2pm at BAM headquarters in Bukit Kiara, The Star reported today.

Chong Wei went through a random dope test during the World Championships in Copenhagen on August 30. He flew to Norway to witness the seal of his B sample being opened at Oslo on November 5.

He faces a two-year ban but will get a chance for a hearing with the Badminton World Federation (BWF), in a date to be announced soon.
It was reported that Chong Wei had been implicated in the scandal after traces of dexamethasone were found in his urine (A sample) during a random test conducted at the World Championships.

Dexamethasone is a type of steroid medication with anti-inflammatory effects usually used to aid an athlete’s rehabilitation.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin was previously reported as saying that a thorough investigation on the shuttler’s recent medical history revealed that the drug was administered into his body on July 17 to treat his thigh injury.

“We are looking at another test right now. The athlete had taken an out-of-competition dope test on August 15 in Malaysia and it was conducted by Wada (World Anti-Doping Agency) before he left to compete in the World Championships in Copenhagen,” Khairy told The Star.

He said that various independent tests were also being carried out by the National Sports Institute (NSI).

The NSI, he said, had also conducted tests on the athlete’s supplements and drinks, his bird’s nest consumption and even his hair gel.

“We want to be as thorough as possible,” said Khairy. – November 8, 2014.

Re test of the Aug 15 sample to see if it has dexa. Test originally came back negative but dexa might not have been tested as its allowed out of competition.
Test done by lab in Europe, they asked same lab to re test.
Aug 15 test was conducted by WADA.

Unless if there is a TUE being granted then the result of the test can be use as a reference to guide them in taking whatever necessary approach in ensuring Dexa is out of his system before the in competition test conducted.

So if dexa is not present in the 15 August sample, BAM and NSI can rule out the 17 July injection theory, right?

But if dexa is indeed present in the 15 August WADA sample, then LCW is a dead man!!!! (I think WADA still has custody of the 15 Aug sample.)

Why take this risk when BAM/NSI know it is likely that dexa's presence in the 30 Aug sample was caused by the 17 July injection??

Honestly, how should WADA control for that?
It's up to the athlete to control his environement in a way that such things don't happen.

Afaik, in the present case, some drug was injected. So it's the job of the medical staff to be sure that
    a) if necessary, WADA is informed
    b) the drug is out of his body by the time of the next competition.

You can't blame LCW for not knowing everything about doping!
But it is his responsibility to be surrounded by a medical staff that does know the rules of WADA.
LCW is a multi-millionaire. He has to be able to find a decent doctor to care about these things! And yes: LCW is responsible for that.

i doubt that, reading between the lines, 'looking at another test (15 Aug)' may just to review the report.

first of all, as the sample A on 15 Aug was negative surely they had discarded the sample by now. Even sample B should have dumped as no reason to re-test.

Act as additional evidence to find out what really is the situation.

There is also the level of the drug to consider. A trace amount might not be deemed to have an effect.

    http://www.thestar.com.my/Sport/Bad...velopment-to-Chong-Weis-doping-investigation/

KUALA LUMPUR: A new development has taken shape in the investigation on world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei’s doping case.

On Thursday, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said that they were awaiting for another random dope test result of Chong Wei conducted on Aug 15 to shed some light on the presence of the banned substance dexamethasone in the shuttler’s urine.

Chong Wei was tested positive for dexamethasone during a doping test at the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Aug 30.

Dexamethasone is not a performance-enhancing drug but a type of steroid medication with anti-inflammatory effects that is usually used to aid an athlete’s rehabilitation.

Khairy said a thorough investigation on the shuttler’s recent medical history revealed that dexamethasone was administered into his body on July 17 to treat his injury.

Then, Chong Wei was nursing an inner thigh injury. Despite being the defending champion, he pulled out from the Glasgow Commonwealth Games from July 23-Aug 3 in his bid to recover for the World Championships.

“We are looking at another test right now. The athlete had taken an out-of-competition dope test on Aug 15 in Malaysia and it was conducted by WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) before he left to compete in the World Championships in Copenhagen,” revealed Khairy.

“The test was sent to a laboratory in Barcelona, and it did not show any trace of dexamethasone. This is because dexamethasone is allowed during out-of-competition tests.

“Once administered into an athlete’s body, dexamethasone should metabolize within 10 to two weeks. It should not be in the system for more than a month.

“We are checking the sample again (in Barcelona). If we find traces of dexamethasone, that will confirm for some freak reason the slow metabolism process of the substance in the athlete’s body.

“It will give us some clue on how it can be in his system for so long (from July 17-Aug 30). It will help us to establish a point that will help us in the mitigating process,” said Khairy.

He added that various independent tests were also carried out by the National Sports Institute (NSI).

“The NSI have also conducted tests on the athlete’s supplements and drinks, his bird’s nest consumption and even his hair gel. We want to be as thorough as possible,” said Khairy.

If Dexa is NOT present from the August 15 sample, then theoretically Dato' last Dexa Controlled Release - IM administration method given on July 17 can be rule out.

If Dexa is present from the August 15 sample then theoretically Dato' last treatment in which the methodology use in administrating Dato' Dexa i.e Controlled Release can be the possible reason for its long existence in Dato' system.

I think BAM/NSI would not dare to take the risk on their top sportsman especially when there is a in-competition banned substance used but IMHO they most possibly made a estimation error for Dexa metabolization life cycle and did not proceed in applying a TUE or include Dexa as their testing substance in their earlier August 15 test which conducted by WADA because maybe they are confident that it should be out of Dato' system by then after a long period of time.

unless it's initialised by WADA I can't see anyone else has the authority to 'looking at the sample' of the 15 Aug test except the lab report.

if a request to retest sample B of the negative result of 15 Aug was indeed demanded surely the same procedures apply, i.e. within the 2 weeks after the report and procedures witnessed by the accused etc!

Official Announcement - BWF ‘Provisionally Suspends’ Lee Chong Wei

    Source - http://bwfbadminton.org/news_item.aspx?id=89494

Malaysian player, Lee Chong Wei, has been provisionally suspended by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) due to an apparent anti-doping regulation violation.

The world-governing body has imposed this suspension due to an Adverse Analytical Finding of a sample taken at the BWF World Championships in August. The BWF has referred the matter to the BWF Doping Hearing Panel and, in due course, the Chair of the Panel will set the time, date and location of a hearing. The Panel will determine whether or not the athlete has committed an anti-doping regulation violation.

In accordance with Clause 14.4.1 of the BWF Anti-Doping Regulations, and following the imposition of the provisional suspension, the BWF and the member association – the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) – are now able to publicly identify the player involved in this matter.

The Provisional Suspension (Clause 7.6.2) means the athlete is barred temporarily from participation in any competition prior to the BWF Doping Hearing Panel’s decision.

There will be no further comment from the BWF regarding this matter until the BWF Doping Hearing Panel makes its determination.

with the info available, or the lack of it I doubt that Aug 15's sample B been tested.

the sample is now almost 2 months old, if the sample still exist it's probably deteriorated to a point that beyond any uses for further test. that probably one of the reason for the 2 weeks period to request for a re-test.

with that in mind we are back to square 1 re. the Aug 15 test. dexamethasone was not tested on Aug 15 thus no way to know if it was in the system then or not.
