Indonesian Thomas - Uber Cup Team

Thomas & Uber Cup: RI team faces extra challenge in preliminary round
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Wed, 01/25/2012 10:36 AM

Indonesia’s road to the Thomas and Uber Cup badminton tournaments will be rocky, not only because of a string of injuries among its top shuttlers but also because of the presence of defending Thomas Cup champion China in the preliminary round.

Usually, as host and defending champion, a country will not compete in the preliminary rounds. South Korea, the defending champion of the Uber Cup, will not be competing in the preliminaries.

But China has decided to take part in the Thomas and Uber Cup Asian zone preliminary round on Feb. 14-19 in Macau.

The decision has sparked reactions from many countries, including Indonesia. The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) said that it had questioned China’s decision with the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

“We’ve asked the BWF over China’s attendance [in preliminary round], because as host it automatically qualifies for the final rounds,” PBSI general-secretary Yacob Rusdianto said on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

“The BWF said that China’s decision did not violate any article in the federation’s regulations. China has decided to let go of its privilege and has chosen to take part in the preliminary round both in the Thomas and Uber Cup events.”

China, the strongest team in badminton, reportedly wants to partake in the preliminaries to amass more points for the upcoming Olympics in London in July-August.

With a string of injuries among half-a-dozen of its top players, Indonesia still listed injured players in the Thomas and Uber Cup team announced on Tuesday, including men’s singles Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka, men’s doubles M. Ahsan, and women’s doubles Nitya Krishinda Maheswari.

The Thomas and Uber Cup tournament will be held on May 20-27 in Wuhan, China.

According to the Badminton Asia Confederation (BAC), the Asian zone preliminary in Macau will feature 14 countries, including host China.

The preliminary round will come up with the top four for the Thomas Cup, excluding defending champion China, and the top three for the Uber Cup, excluding host China and defending champion South Korea.

Yacob said that China’s presence in the preliminaries would not affect seats up for grabs in the final round because China, as host and defending champion of the Thomas Cup, had automatically secured its spot in the finals.

“What if China fails in the preliminary, will the country still earn the right to be in the finals round? It would be strange to not have the host in the finals. That’s our next question to the BWF if such a thing happens,” he added.

In terms of injured shuttlers, Yacob said that Ahsan, Hayom and Nitya had joined the training program.

“So far, they’ve started the training. We have a few more weeks ahead to continue the program. We even decided to cancel a simulation tournament [for the Thomas and Uber Cups] because of their recovery, which is far more important. Now, they are fatigue-free,” he added.

Team Indonesia is scheduled to fly to Macau on Feb. 9 in order to acclimatize to the local conditions before the preliminary round.

Badminton: Squads Named as Indonesia Looks to End Drought

Ami Afriatni | January 24, 2012

Vita Marissa’s withdrawal was the only surprise as the Indonesian Badminton Association announced the teams for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup on Tuesday.

The association, known as the PBSI, picked the country’s top players for the biennial world team championship’s Asian zone qualifying rounds in Macau from Feb. 13-19. The finals will take place from May 20-27 in Wuhan, China.

Men’s doubles specialist Bona Septano and women’s singles player Bellatrix Manuputty are the only shuttlers making their debut in the event.

“These are the best shuttlers we have right now,” PBSI secretary general Yacob Rusdianto said at the Cipayung training facility in East Jakarta on Tuesday. “We firmly believe the teams will qualify for the finals in China.”

The top five men’s teams in the qualifiers will go to the Thomas Cup finals, while the top four women’s teams will qualify for the Uber Cup finals.

In a potentially risky decision, the PBSI called up several players who are battling injuries.

Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka (leg), Mohammad Ahsan (arm), Greysia Polii (shoulder) and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari (hip) now have just over two weeks to overcome their injuries and get ready for the event.

“There’s still time for them to be back at their best because they started training again last week,” Yacob said.

Women’s doubles veteran Vita, who also missed out on the 2010 Uber Cup because of injury, said she had decided to withdraw from the team.

“It was because my current doubles partner, Nadya Melati, was not included on the team. Instead, [the PBSI] wanted to pair me with Liliyana [Natsir],” the 31-year-old shuttler said. “I had a good partnership with [Liliyana], but it was long ago.

“I asked the PBSI to call up Nadya but they refused. So I thought that it would be better for the team if I withdrew.”

Good luck for INA Thomas & Uber team :)

Althought Vita is not too good anymore in present day but she is still better than Shendy... IMHO

She had decide to withdrawn from team coz her partner Nadya not called by PBSI. Yes, appreciate Vita decision..

Yeah, Good Luck to INA Uber and Thomas team 2012 :)

have watched several matches of Greysia in MAS Open, i think she is OK already, but not yet 100%, still no power. Opponent give all the shots to her.

Poor Greysia being targeted by other pairs. I still think their game are not used to be. Before injury they can pushed Ha/Kim to limit but last time they met, only got 8 and 9 ?? Sigh

Fran is good, but we have other good MD players...
:) Hendra Setiawan and Alvent etc. are all awesome MDs...

Yes, I forget about Alvent/Hendra..:) Perhaps also too strong desire want to see the young players participate in TUC :)

I'd say Bona/Ahsan as 1st single and Kido/Hendra setiawan as 2nd double in this tournament?

well, I'd say that's depend on the situation..
We can also make another combination, for example: alvent/ahsan as 1st MD and kido/hendra as 2nd MD, according to the opponent strength..
Or maybe bona/hendra s. :D

seeding for TUC2012 (uber team qualification asian zone):
1. china
2. japan
3. taipei
4. thailand
5. indonesia
6. india
7. singapore
8. hongkong
9. malaysia
10. srilanka
11. vietnam
12. macau
13. kazhakstan
14.philipines

It's better to put Kido/Hendra as 1st MD than pairing other. As we know Ahsan just overcome his injury and seems Kido/Hendra is more experience so they have more skill and good mental... IMHO

For another combination, Ahsan/Alvent is good (impressed with their perform at SEA Games last year) but sadly Ahsan is still overcome his injury... :( Hopefully Ahsan can back to good perform soon, in my opinion he is a young player who has talent..

I hope so too.. I'm really impressed with alvent/ahsan.. But still worrying whether ahsan has fully recover.. But I believe we can still make strong combination even if it's not alvent/ahsan..

agree, kido/hendra is good.. but, what happen to kido lately??
Of course, he has killer smash, but his unforced errors is just... err, what should I say?.. killing himself more? :p

the placement for first and second pair for MD is based on WR,
if we want, Kido/Hendra be the 1st MD, then we need another combination who don't have WR pts.
We can put Kido/Hendra as 1st and Ahsan/Bona as 2nd. CMIIW

wow, indonesia got the 4th seeded in thomas cup qualification

and 5th seeded in the uber cup qualification.

that's bad, hopefully the draw isn't too bad tho.

Uber Cup vs Thailand still withstand a chance only if, 2 WD and WS #3 won the game,

however vs Japan, Taipei and china not so sure.

Thomas Cup, we should be able to qualify.

In the Sea games, that's what everyone hope but Thailand managed to win despite the home crowd.

I think it is difficult considering the WD is still injured. But possible if all WD are fully fit.

WS actually Firda and Linda are almost on par with Thailand players but only if they are fit.

I'd say that's pretty difficult for uber team..
But we should at least be able to handle thailand and taipei ..

against thailand:
We should take 2WD and 1WS (WS #3 maybe).. Don't repeat the same mistake in sea games.. And it's good if we can steal one point from WS#1 and WS#2. I think Firda and Linda still have chance against top 2 THA WS if they're in top form..

against taipei:
We should take 2WD and 1WS. I'm quite optimistic, since bella beat Cheng and Tzu Ying Tai before.. Of course TPE 1st WD would not that easy, but I believe we can handle it (with right composition)..

And the rest (japan, china) will be really difficult for us..

Yeah, out of top-4 seeding team isn't good prospect, let's see whether INA Uber team have favourable draw that will be released tomorrow ;)

I hope INA will be at the same group with either THA or TPE.

INA vs THA
INA lost to THA in AG and SEA Games, eventhough i am quite optimistic INA can beat THA, but INA always lost in second WD through a scracth pair(Nitya/Pia and Vita/Butet). But now, we got Nitya/Feinya as WD#2 already. Asumming Greysia and Nitya are fit 100% already, i believe INA will secure the WD sector. And need one points from either WS1 or WS3. Firda beat Porntip in SEA Games.. Bella could handle Sapsiree i think.

INA vs TPE
INA beat TPE in AG 3-0. Again, if Greysia and Nitya are 100% fit, INA will secure the WD. Greysia/Meiliana beat CWS/CYC straight sets in last meeting and Nitya/Feinya shd deliver a points too. While Firda hold a good record against Cheng Shao Cieh. Tricky match in WS3 between Pai Ma Hsiao against Bella.
It is going to be a tough match agaisnt JPN, INA need to rely more

yea man, only if Vita/Butet won the last set of their game, it would've turned into Indonesia's favour.

Badminton : Youngsters Asked To Ease Vets' Burden

Ami Afriatni | January 31, 2012

Simon Santoso will lead Indonesia’s Thomas Cup team, a move that could signal the first step in the country’s long-delayed shift to a new generation.

Simon will assume the No. 1 men’s singles spot previously held by Taufik Hidayat, who will move to No. 2. Asian qualifying for the men’s team tournament takes place Feb. 13 to 19 in Macau.

“It’s time for Simon to take a greater responsibility as the team spearhead. He will be facing the No. 1 players from different countries and that will sharpen his mentality,” Taufik said on the sidelines of practice at the Indonesian Badminton Federation’s (PBSI) national training center in Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Monday.

Indonesia was drawn into Group B of Thomas Cup qualifying alongside India, Singapore and Macau. It opens against host nation Macau on Feb. 13, followed by Singapore the next day and India on Feb. 15.

Taufik, who has played on the national team since 1996, said his position at No. 2 was good for him because it would ease some of the pressure on him, allowing him to play more freely.

The rest of Indonesia’s Thomas Cup team has a similar look. The younger shuttlers will assume leading roles with the more experienced competitors providing backup.
