For those of you who've read this book, do you mind giving me a brief
summary about it? I located a copy and am considering buying one.

But I already have a few references, not sure if there'd be much
duplication. Can someone tell me, e.g., if it focuses on strategies?
or very basic stroke moves? How would you compare it with any
    other basic books you have?

    Excellent book

    Raymond,
As the title suggested, it's not your basic badminton book. This one takes you beyond your basic techniques. The book put together a complete list of strokes that you will need to be a complete badminton player plus also an approach on how to practise these strokes (racquet skills) and your body movements (body skills).

The later part of the book focuses on getting fit, preparation and winning at singles/doubles.

This is one book that I would highly recommend to any badminton fanatic.:D

You're exactly right. I noticed that too. What a rip off!

Too bad, good player/author's books got out of print. I got his
"Winning Badminton Doubles" which is mostly about strategies,
a very rare collection. Well, I guess I was luck - I found it in a local
library in a small town called Ottawa in Canada.

Just wonder what it takes to request the publish to reprint a
small numbers (or just tell them how good the books are).
As long as there's $$ to be made, maybe they'd be motivated!?

I found another copy of the book some where else. See if I have
any luck finally receiving it without any hicups. It's rather expensive
too but more manageable ($35, delivery included).

So for those who're interested in this book (or any other better
books), try your libraries (esp. if you're in Canada).

Hahaha...Ottawa being classified as a small town. :D :D :D after all it's the capital of Canada

I guessed it would be small after Toronto, Montreal & Vancouver.

    BTW, Happy Canada's Day!!

isn't there a law about out-of-print copyrighted articles? something like you can legally make copies of copyrighted materials as long as it is out of print?

Yea, right. If you go to Amazon, I bet you'd get the same long list.
In fact, I tried them before; I clicked on a couple of books I'm interested in,
and the links brought me to Amazon...

BTW, I lost the "Excelling at Badminton" book order. It belongs to rare book
collection now, and the book store "carrying" it made a mistake, thinking they
    have it.

    Oh well...:(

Jake Downey wrote most of his books while managing the coaching development in England. I think that there was some argument and he left. Anyway, mosy of what you find in his books is contained in the coaching manuals of the BAofE. If you have access to them you shouldn't need the book.

    other books

Badminton by Steve Boga, is a pretty decent text that borrows liberally (can you spell 'plagiarism'?) from Winning Badminon by Davidson & Gustavson. The latter book, written in the early/mid 1950s was way ahead of its time. It has a few excellent illustrations that the Boga book did not choose to borrow (steal?).

James Poole (PhD), the last of the US champions (1950s & 60s), was also way ahead of his time when it comes to badminton theory. He was talking about forearm pronation (& supination) back in the 60s & 70s when everyone else was talking about 'wrist snap' (& the wristy-ness of badminton). Even today, biomechanic misconceptions prevail. When ppl hear abt 'wrist snap' or the wristy-ness of badm they mistakenly employ wrist extension and flexion rather than forearm rotation.

The Jake Downey books that I've seen are very fine texts as well.

Wow ... I was very lucky. WWC helped me find a used copy of this book on the web for only $12 US plus $3 shipping (thanks so much, WWC!). I also got Winning Badminton Singles from the same seller for $15. He still has another copy of Winning Badminton Singles, for $15 too, if anyone is interested. This book is excellent too. Here is the URL:
    http://dogbert.abebooks.com/abe/BookDetails?bi=132734334

I also bought Winning Badminton Doubles from Amazon market place for $18 + S/H.

By the way, I now "own" WWC a Winex racquet :) and am looking for Better Badminton for All.

Well Kwun, I dunno what the law is in the States (obviously each country's copyright law is different) But in NZ, once a person copyrights his/her work, it will last all his lifetime plus 20 years after his death before you can even remotely consider publishing his/her materials :p
