Hello from Sofia, Bulgaria! This is my badminton diary.
Emil Dimitrov, 32 years old, very passionate about badminton and sports in general.
Started playing badminton in 6th grade at school. In high school spent 4 years in badminton club VIAS (Bulgaria). Earned some tournament awards and medals at school level.
Entering the University, I tried but couldn't find a way to continue playing. I started playing American football and spent 6 wonderful years in two of the best teams on the Balkans - Sofia Warriors and Sofia Bulldozers. My weight (I'm a big guy) was an advantage for my football position (DT/OL). Due to the high risk of injuries though, I decided to put an end to my football career and after a nearly 10-year pause, return to my first love - badminton.
The return happened in February 2017 when I found a badminton hall near my new home. I considered myself a decent player due to my school years' achievements but diving into the Men Singles was a tough reality-check and a priceless lesson. I realized how much I had to learn and how many things I needed to improve in order to be competitive.
The first medal came in July 2017 when I reached the MS4 final game.
2018 was a huge success with 11 medals, 2 of which gold. I won Division 3 League in Sofia in Men Singles and finished 2nd in Men Doubles. My consistent appearances in the Bulgarian Badminton Circuit competitions all over the country and the bronze medal in Kardzhali earned me the 2nd place in 2018 BBC Division 4 MS. A wonderful year with a total of 34 appearances, emotions, travelling and new friends.
2019 started awfully. Fatigued body and underestimated flu caused serious health issues that put me out of the game for several months. Getting back in shape under strong medication was a tough physical and mental challenge. The lesson learned - know and respect your limits. Second half of the year was fine. The biggest succes so far was the MD2 silver medal in November. Will probably try to focus on Doubles in 2020. Update: A wonderful finish of the year, as I have won the TCE Christmas Event in Men's Doubles.
