When I first started learning badminton, the way I was shown to do the doubles serve, is similar to the normal way, but involved holding the shuttle closer to the racket. One person that did that, said that it reduces variables. (I only started learning badminton in 2016, but may have learnt some old methods)
Since then though, i've been shown a different technique, of holding the shuttle a distance from the racket. (maybe about 6 inches I guess). And if I watch the pros play, it looks like that's what they are doing. And this latter technique I learnt may be better.. , quicker, and less obvious to an opponent if one is to do a flick serve.

I figured maybe that method of holding the shuttle close, was an old method, but I watched a video from 1978 to see if they (when doing the backhand low serve), hold it close or not.
