    Great book and fast delivery

I purchased the ebook and got my password the next day.

I have now fully read the book and found several interesting sections that I putting into my training. The explanation of how to do the high backhand is probably the most easy to understand description I have seen anywhere.

There is no mumble jumble in this book. It is straight to the point and most sections are easy to understand. It is definitely worth the money spent.

However, I am still missing a section of how to hit the backhand when it is on the side or in front of you in mid to back court.

    Thanks
    / Jens

    drive backhand

    Hi Jens.

Glad you like the book. As for how to hit the backhand at the side or in front of you at the mid-court/back-court, I think you're talking about a drive-backhand as compared to a high backhand. For a drive backhand,
    1. first do the proper grip (refer to "Backhand Grip" section in the book, pages 52 to 65), so if the shuttle is at your side or behind you, shift to the "past body backhand grip", if it is in front, then use the standard backhand grip;
    2. take a step with your right foot (if you're right handed) and plant it close to the spot underneath impact point (page 67 in book);
    3. next do the wrist coil (making sure the racket points to the ground for more power), elbow throw, wrist action through the pushing range (pages 72-78, 80-81 and 183 for pushing range). Since you're hitting a drive, your elbow will be at shoulder height or lower (depending on the height of the shuttle), unlike with a high backhand when the elbow will be more at eye level. Make sure you're an arm's length from the shuttle so your shot is not cramped.

So basically you use the same mechanics as the high backhand, but your elbow/arm is just lower. For practice, do the complete high backhand motion as described in the book (let the hundreds of pictures of Butch guide you), then gradually lower your arm but executing the same motion. When your arm is lower than your shoulder, during the wrist coil, the racket would no longer be pointing to the ground but sometimes will be pointing behind you or pointing up to the ceiling depending on how low you hit the shuttle. This'll give you power during the wrist coil.

    Thanks.

Progress after 1 weeks practising the high backhand instructions

I have always been hitting a weak backhand and my high backhand "clear" has at its best been 3/4 length.

Now, I have followed the high backhand instructions and drills in the book for about 1 week. In total I have spent perhaps 60 min hitting the backhand in my living room to get used to the motion (5-10 min per day), and practised it for 2 hours with a partner and occasionally in 3 matches....pretty much badminton for one week for me.

By this mail, I just want to testify that after 1 weeks practice I can hit the full length backhand clear frequently, but far from all the time:(. The biggest improvement is my timing and I have reduced the number of "disaster backhand shots" - the motion no longer feels awkvard. I still need a lot of practice to incorporate it as a new weapon in my game, but I am very hapy with the progress so far.

Most people take longer to learn it

From experience, most of the people applying the backhand techniques in the book take around 1-2 weeks to learn the stroke, then 2 months to really master/be consistent with it.

You're doing great! Keep it up!

Some of my family is going to Cebu for a baptism on June 10. I can send a copy for you. They'll be staying at the Marriott hotel. Just pay P450 for the book.

That'd be great. Is the international version available? Black and white's okay as long as it isn't printed on newspaper paper.

Anyway some of the guys asked me thru PM on regards to the book.. so i might as well post it here. Heheh Free Publicity for VIP and Butch. :)

I think the book is really good for beginners and intermediate. It has alot of illustration on how to execute shots. The graphics and pictures are good. IMO it is better than other badminton books in the market. It is good to read and not boring. Most books are very technical and most of the illustration are either written on drawn and not many pictures on how to hit and execute certain shots. So i can say that there is no such badminton book yet as such as the one did by Butch Oreta and Vip Malixi.

This is a very good book. I would recommend it to anyone who plays badminton. The only thing that can be improve is the weight of the book and the clarity of the pictures. Anyhow, its good enough for me at least. :). I hope it helps.

Its kinda heavy to bring along all the time. I think almost 1kg per book ( i'm not sure ) due to the high quality paper.

With all respect, but I think you should reconsider the non-printable part. It's naïve to think it'll cut down on piracy for several reasons. Distributing a PDF is much easier then a printed version, so the piracy of printed copies will only be a marginal (neglectable) part of the total piracy (a pdf can be mailed to millions of people in a matter of seconds, printing a book takes time and costs money). A password protection won't stop people who really want to distribute the printed version of the book without permission either. An Adobe Acrobat password protection isn't 100% watertight. The reality is that piracy is something you can't do much about and by making the PDF non-printable you only punish your honest customers. For some people it's even a reason for not buying your book and it's very likely the money you lose this way is much higher then the money you win by making it non-printable.

    Re: reconsider...

When I broached the subject of creating the book to Butch Oreta, I was not thinking about piracy or money or anything else other than wanting a book that actually revealed how good players execute badminton strokes. I wanted to learn how to do the jump smash, the tumbling net drop, the past body forehand and backhand, the crosscourt net drop, etc. I tried convincing dozens of Western publishers and literary agents to help finance our venture but they all said the same thing: badminton doesn't have a big enough market to warrant the time and money required to create a quality product. I disagreed with this conclusion, and so, with one Philippine academic publisher interested, Butch and I did it on our own: we filmed the lessons, he explained and I rephrased to make the explanations clear for anybody, we tested the lessons; I photographed, designed the layout, analyzed how to present the material so it's very clear, logical, intuitive, interesting, easy-to-read and understand, and in small doses so that it's not overwhelming.

When the book finally got printed, it sold out its first two print runs and is now on its third. I got some requests from foreign buyers asking how to get the book. Because of its weight and the fact that I don't have any access to the print books other than collecting royalties (which I haven't received a single cent yet 'cuz it's a small publisher and they will only pay Butch and me some time in the future), I tried to convince foreign distributors like Amazon, ebook.com, etc. to make the book available abroad--but, to no avail. So, even though I didn't think I would be able to market it well ('cuz I don't really have money to spend on Internet marketing, etc.), I created the website to sell the book on my own, I created the layout for the web page, designed and programmed the PHP/MySQL to process the payments and downloads, links, etc.

The result: a lot of people's badminton skills have improved. I've received dozens of emails from people who've bought the book and were really happy at how it upped their game. They say they learned a lot from it. Even if Butch and I never get rich from the book, we'll be satisfied for having contributed something to this world that has made better some people's lives. We feel we've created the first really good book on badminton. Not bad for two guys from a "Third-world" country. The lesson I learned from this endeavor is this: when you have passion, love, for something (in this case, badminton), if you just persevere, you can accomplish anything.

Everyone told me this book was just a pipe dream, that it'll never get made. But I pushed on anyway. And now it's done, it exists, and it's doing well. As Steve Jobs used to say, "Real artists ship." That's all I've ever wanted to be. A 'real artist.'

Was that a reply to my post  I don't see the link at all between everything you wrote here and my point of making the PDF printable.

IMHO, I'd have to agree with raptorman. Not to be offensive, but not printing the PDF, I think, isn't very helpful. File duplication makes very ineffective. Pirates would probably prefer to duplicate the file rather than the printed copy.

    Hope this helps

    printing

This was already discussed in earlier pages of this topic. Basically, what I said was, I will allow a printable version upon verification of buyer information (student or work info).

    Hi Vip,

I've looked through the thread but still didn't get it...
    1. Ok, if I want to buy this e-book together with my training partner, can I just make him a copy of the book and tell him the password? So both of us have the access to the book?

    2. What's the six month limitation about? One can't see the online videos after six month or what?

    cheers,

    Pi

    clarification

Once you've bought the book, you have log on privileges to view videos and download book updates. You're not allowed to distribute the book anyone else though. Once it's discovered that your copy has been distributed, you'll be informed about it and then your logging in privilegs revoked--so you'll lose out on future updates to the book and won't be able to view future videos. Anyway, the purchase price is for the ebook. The updates, videos, etc. are extras I want to provide the purchasers. Should there come a time when there are no more buyers and thus I can no longer afford to sustain the site, then I'll have to close it down--but buyers have already downloaded their copy of the ebook.

    Thanks.

thank you for the reply. On previous pages, there are people asking you about a printable version of the e-book. It is understandable that it's safer not to enable printing. However, it would be good if I can print it out and have it with me when I'm practising in the Gym. (instead of bringing my heavy computer)

I'm currently a student at the University of Nottingham. There is no reason for me to purchase the e-book other than improving my game. Would it be possible to get an authorized printable version of the e-book from you?

    cheers,

    Pi
