Yes but they really shouldn't be judging a sport they don't know anything about. That's what they've done wrong. You're right though we shouldn't take it too seriously. The problem is their perceptions of the sport are based on just about nothing and that's where they are going wrong. They really should know what they're talking about before forming and expressing an opinion on it.
No, I do not hate people who look down upon badminton. There are always going to be people who don't understand or who simply don't care about badminton. That's life.
Why get upset... Pity them instead of hating them ... You/we have really nothing to "proove" to them, if they are igonrant and unvilling to expand their horizons It like all those people that are below 80 IQ.. Why hate them .. Its like hating insects .. just be happy you know better.. If they doubt that its a tough sport.. just invite them to a game and give them some excersie round the court A good way is always to place a bet of some sort.. say "you get $10 for each point (old scoring = low budget ) you get from me in a game.. to "motivate" them /Twobeer
that sounds a great idea! i'll tell them that. "if you think its so easy, why don't you come and play me? i'll give you a dollar for every point you score against me.
i think the only reason some people look down upon badminton is because they have not been educated about it due to poor tv coverage and publicity. Maybe in future (10-20 yrs) the majority of the population will realize that badminton is as good as any other sport.
i know where you're coming from but we have to understand as well why there is poor tv coverage and publicity? it is because people (like here in Australia) and prejudice against sports they don't undertstand the nature of. most Aussies i know stick to "aussie" sports like "Aussie" rules, rugby, cricket, tennis etc. a handful love soccer, and a minority love badminton. and believe me, that minority is say... 1 out of 10 people?
Yeah but Badminton in Aus is on the rise again. The Commonwealth Games gave the sport some positive coverage (if you got the payTV channels for it there was heaps of coverage of badminton).
Yeah I hate that so much! Especially since most of my people who critisize this wonderful sport are white people (not being racists). There are many white badminton players as we all know like Peter Gade. I myself am Asian but I don't see why everyone thinks badminton is like the sport seen the White & Nerdy Music Video. Actually I was kinda like that when I first started playing. Then I realized how much I sucked and that I needed to start sprinting towards the net and stuff if I am really to be a pro badminton Olympian.
i dont know how it is in the UK or denmark, i suppose they don't look down at badminton so much because of robertson/emms and gade respectively. but in australia, most whites look down on the sport.
White and Nerdy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xEzGIuY7kw, look at 2:08. they think badminton's a slow sport?!
We had a surprising amount of Badminton coverage for the Commonwealth Games here in NZ. We get very little coverage usually. We're lucky to see it once a year. But I think the Commonwealth Games and the NZ Open last year were about the best I've seen so far. If the trend continues Badminton might start to pick up a bit of popularity here . I know a lot of people who did see the Badminton on TV during the Commonwealth Games and because they knew I played they'd say things to the effect of "wow Badminton is actually quite a fast sport isn't it?". So the little coverage we do get obviously has quite an effect.
badminton is unique in the sense that it can be enjoyed at all levels of play, even at the level of 2 stationary kids hitting under-net shuttles to each other. in countries where badminton isn't popular, it ain't surprising that people have misconceptions about the game. nothing to hate about them actually. after all there are people who have never played badminton indoors before.
im not sure if it's popular in perth or not. there are a handful of clubs though but not really many places to play. also there are no specialty shops i know of, whereas in sydney, as i read in other posts, there are at least 2. i also dont know where to get my racket re-strung so i have to do it overseas. not many people i know (whites) play the sport seriously, actually there is only 1 white guy i know that plays.
I think it's more their arrogance than the fact they don't understand badminton (if we're talking about the same type of people here). It's certainly nothing to hate someone over. But it's enough to dislike their attitude. I know you're not trying to be racist but try not to let whites pop up in all your posts lol . We know the sort of person you're getting at.
one time i stayed after school and was waiting for a ride so just sat by and watched b-ball practice. two guys came in and one happened to be my coaches friend. the others just a buff b-ball dude. so my friend's coach is like "did u play badminton 2day?" me: nah coaches friend: oh. so why do u have ur bag around? other guy: badminton? i could beat u any day at badminton. coaches friend: nah. this kid'll beat ur ass with his left hand. other guy: any time, anywhere me: *yawn* heh heh. funny now that i think back to it. the combination of a yawn and one other supporting party rly helped with the situation. anyways... i think caucasians(sorry to those that dont) look at this sport as a 'sissy' sport because simply, it doesnt require any contact or a power outburst that can be easily seen. hockey, football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and tennis are all either contact sports or sports that require a big power outburst. badminton....is however a thinking game that involves alot of technique. u gotta put together every little one of ur tools(footwork, power, control) to develope the game and play it in an infinite number of situations. not to mention how small the dam birdie is and how little 'damage' it does on contact with ur body XD. thinking....well some people dont rly like to do that. therefore they stick to wut they can build, their bodies and work around that. but the environment that building emselves to be bulky puts them in is an environment that depends solely on brute force, anything that requires less is looked down upon and considered 'sissy.' -2nd edit- also, lately i've found that alot more kids at my school appreciate the sport(because i fit in all the social groups and 'introduce' the sport to my school). most of the ballers at my school have seen me play one time another because i used to play so much during season. plus whenever i do see some kid peering through the door i'll use the gr11 cannon and the sound is bound to get someones attention. XD the problem is when coach looks over and yells at me for smashing at my partner whos sitting at the front lifting during a dropping drill. basically saying, if people think its a sissy sport, show something masculine about it. even smash down the lines to set urself up whiel ur opponent dives and then run up and nail him the next shot if it makes the ballers on the side go WOOOW. but after that u gotta pull ur opponent aside to give a big apology LOL. -my two cents, HPT -edit- oh ya. and it really annoys me too.
well, i never had that kind of problem here, simply because in indonesia, badminton is one of the popular sports here, eventhough the popularity is decreasing.. but i do remember one girl, after i told her i am playin badminton, she looked down on badminton player because the clothing makes the player looks like geek.. hmmm...after paying some attention to it...heyy, i think its true...why do the badminton clothes must have a collar..and the shorts, waa..it's also very geeky...mini press pants, hahahaha.... I know there is alot of improvement right now, but still, asian dont look good in it, maybe european will be very good wearing the latest fashion for badminton... I dont know guys, but i think badminton clothing had something to do with the reason they looked down on us...
