try a squash racket to hit the backhand shots with and that should increase power. The are a lot heavier than a badminton racket so it means more resistant. :D

Do be careful though becos there is always the risk of hurting your wrist due to the weight of the tennis racket.
There is another method of doing weight training to improve your backhand. Tie a piece of twine/string of about 2 - 3 feet in length to a weight, brick or whatever . The other end of the twine, tie it to an old broom handle or round rod or pipe about 1 foot in length.
Grip the handle with both hands stretch out straight ahead of you, same height as your shoulder. The twine will be dangling down in between your hands and the weight or brick suspended but not touching the floor.
Slowly start to scroll the rod with your hand alternating, using only wrist work. Scroll until the weight reaches your hands, then release it slowly using your wrist work again.
Repeat this exercise till your wrists are tired. Dont be disheartened initially, it can be very difficult. If you do it consistently, after 1 or 2 weeks, you will find improvement in your backhand and also your wrist work.

The way i train is i just leave my badminton racket in the bag it comes in and just swing like that. no holes or anything for wind to pass through. it is pretty effective in my opinion. a tennis racket can be really dangerous because of its weight and you might injure yourself and mess up your form.

well you can do bicep curls i do them and i think they are very effective i have a really strong backhand compared to my other team mates. The weight and rep/set number is up to you and your strenght and capacity, dont over do it and start slow or else you will get this really sore tendons in between ur bicep and forearm.
here is a link to see what it looks like http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Biceps/DBCurl.html

try some basic wrist drills. never make your wrist so tired. anything that is so much is counter productive. plus, strokes are not only done with the wrist power itself. some are made with the participation of ligaments and muscles of your whole body, from the foot, legs, abs,to shoulders. it goes hand in hand.

I love Badminton because I love Badminton!

I think i saw a video of this on youtube, the advantage of this is that it's free. And if you hold it up high then you also train your abdomen, thus incresing power of all shots.

    Try training your triceps.

Besides the timing and snap, a tricep helps with the "arm-power".
Hope i'm making a little bit of sense:)

Smashes make use of your biceps, shoulder, and chest muscles. Similarly, backhand uses your triceps, shoulder and back.

    Tricep
    Cable with rope (Best)
    Dips

    Back
    Pull-up
    Laterral pull down
    Any rowing exercise

    Shoulder
External rotation using dumbells, cables or coloured (rubber) bands
If you do internal rotation, it will improve your forward swing.

    Wrist
    As described by patan
Barbels - Curl your biceps slightly with your palm facing down and snap your wrists using the momentum generated. Do it fast.

Of course, this is based on the assumption that you have got the technique right but haven't got enough power.

What i used to do is tie a shuttle to a string, and hang it off the roof and hit on the backhand, it really helped develop my timing.

fairly spot on here....guys you need to make sure before you put any power into any stroke that your technique and placement is perfect.

learn the basics before the advancements and you will perform 100% better!

just remember training takes time. There is no such thing as a shortcut or fastrack to perfectness!!!
