2009 Wc India wins bid to host 2009 World badminton Championship JAISHREE BALASUBRAMANIAN KUALA LUMPUR, DEC 9 (PTI) India today won the bid to stage the 2009 World Badminton Championship, paving the way for the country to host its first-ever world championship in an Olympic sport. India won the bid to host the event after the International Badminton Federation decided in New Delhi's favour at its Council Meeting here. Denmark and Macau, who were also in the race to host the championship, withdrew their candidature in favour of India. "It will be the first ever world championship (except cricket) given to India to host in all Olympic sports put together," an elated V K Verma, President of the Badminton Association of India, who is also the Vice President of the International Badminton Federation, told PTI here. Verma said the unanimous decision was taken by the IBF, which has 160 member countries, after a presentation by India highlighting the country's tourist attractions, its economic strength, its population base for such events, the proven credibility of Indian establishment and the government's full support for hosting a competition of such magnitude. The championship is held annually and the hosts are announced four years in advance. More than 500 sportsmen from 50 countries will take part in the championship in New Delhi scheduled for September 2009, he said. "The Indian Olympic Association has acknowledged this event as a curtain raiser for the 2010 Commonwealth Games," the BAI President said.
Good for India. I saw a young female single player from India during the WC2005. She was quite good. Hopefully, this will allow more participation of badminton in India. I think this is great.
do you like all that spicy stuff ?? You know what I recently found out; Indonasian food is very similar to Indian food ...
Errrr...Except for spicy, Indian food is not similar to Indo food. At least not for me. But I love both foods.
Fri Sep 19, 7:03 AM ET NEW DELHI (AFP) - The 2009 world badminton championships have been shifted from the Indian capital of New Delhi to the southern city of Hyderabad, an official said on Friday. The change was made due to the delay in renovation work being carried out at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi, which is also the venue for the Commonwealth Games in 2010. "Hyderabad has excellent badminton facilities and will be a good place to hold the world championships," Indian badminton chief V.K. Verma said. "The world body approved the change after we told them the New Delhi stadium may not be ready in time." The world championships are scheduled for August 10-16 next year
^^Hyderabad..^^ ..will host 2 baddy tourneys next yr. The 1st is the India Open GP Gold and will be followed by the World Championships...Hmm, i wonder who will represent BC in the WC???....Oldhand, perhaps??..
^^You should..^^ ..ask our Oldhand to come and perhaps assist you... How many are coming??..... Well, alas, perhaps this could tempt the rest of the BCers to come and could be the setting of BC's WC's get-together? see pics in thread below (he did a promotional tour & surveyed the place recently) http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57898
Sigh! Right now, there's too much stacked in both my work and travel folders Although I'd love to be there, I don't have the faintest idea right now if I'll be able to attend the 2009 WC in India... in any case, there's plenty of time to decide Of course, it will be great fun to go
I plan to backpack to Hyderabad this summer and wish to watch the tournament at the same time Is anyone interested too? and is there any ticketing information of the tournament? I hope to watch for free
