Are there no continental preliminaries for the SUDIRMAN CUP??and,if not, dont u think a period of just 6 days[may10-15] is just too small for such a big event.how many teams take part in tournment

if you think deeper. by that, i mean listing out how many matches are needed and how much time there is in a day, and then from there you find out how many courts is needed, you will realized that it fits quite ok in the allocated time.

the actual exercise is left to the reader.

But what about the rest to the shuttlers?and even if the rest time is enough is it not odd that such a tournament is just for such a short period.[imagine Euro tournaments in football being just around 10 das].And please tell the no. of teams taking part and what about the continental preliminaries ??

There aren't any continental preliminaries for the Sudirman Cup, all teams (probably more than 50) will participate in various level groups.
Only the 6 teams in the top division have a chance of winning the Cup however.
I agree the competition period is rather short, it would be better for fans if it lasted longer...

Sort of... as seven says all countries can enter a team (i think), but they are all placed in divisions of standards according to past performances.

So a team in division 8 cannot win, because they must be promoted from their division by winning their matches, then when in division 7 next tournament win to reach division 6 etc.... Until they are in a top division, when they fight out to make it to semi final, then final.

That is the basic format, but I am not sure of the number of teams in each division, or the number that get promoted each year etc....

    Based on previous tournaments,
Group A (which is the top division) has 6 teams, divided into 2 subgroups.
Group B to last Group have 8 teams each, also divided into 2 subgroups.
The last group will usually have an odd number of teams depending on total number of entries.

Each subgroup has its own round-robin matches, so at this point:
Group A teams have played 2 matches each (in total 6 matches)
Other teams have played 3 matches each (in total 12 matches per Group)

After the round-robin stage is the classification stage.
    Group A
Top 2 subgroup teams (4 teams) play in crossover semifinals.
The winners will fight it out for the Cup.
The losers will jointly hold 3rd position.
Last subgroup teams play for 5/6 classification. (6th team is demoted to Group B next tournament.)
    (In total 4 matches)

    Group B
Top subgroup teams playoff for 7/8 classification. (7th team is promoted to Group A next tournament.)
Second subgroup teams playoff for 9/10.
Third subgroup teams playoff for 11/12.
Last subgroup teams playoff for 13/14. (14th team is demoted to Group C.)
    (In total 4 matches)

Group C, D, E, .... follow the same format as Group B (the last Group will probably have another arrangement).
(In total 4 matches each Group)

In summary, each team do not have to play more than 4 matches. Since a player can play one (sometimes two) match per day (unlike football players who moan if they play more than once per week), the whole tournament can easily fit into one week (unlike the Euro or the World Cup).

In the previous Sudirman Cup in Holland, there were 50 entries. There were 24 ties in each of the first three days (other days have less ties), which means almost every team is involved. 8 ties were held at 10:00, 8 more at 14:00 and last eight at 18:00. There are bound to be some spillovers, but generally no problems as far as I can see.

Team tournaments (Sudirman, Thomas, Uber) have no stars. There is another formula to calculate ranking points earned for team tournaments.

    Sponsors name!

Doublestar is the sponsors name, just like the 2004 Bank Mandiri Thomas and Uber Cups, or the 2003 Q1 IBF World Championship.
