and now let's get back to the point! photos !! Tournoi International d'Aix-en-Provence (South of France)
From the property of the pics, the photographer use EOS 30D, 1st pic was taken at ISO 800 f/2.8 1/800 focal length 120mm -1/3EV Aperture priority; the 2nd pics was at ISO 400 f/2.8 1/1600s focal length 175mm. No flash was used for both pics. These 2 pics are very colorful & very sharp, taken at a very bright and misleading color court. The lighting of 2nd pic is strange, there may hv pp if the photographer didn't use flash or external light source. For wb, 1st pic is in yellow tone, 2nd pic is in fluorescent white. Are they the professional player? They seem like scheduled pics, not taking in actual games.
I'm the photogrpaher I did't use flash in badminton, it's forbiden The lighting of the second pic is stange because it was taken in the morning and the windows of the gynmasium ar very high, But it's only the real lighting I had in the gym no relector was used And It is not scheduled pictures, it's real pictures, taken during the game, on an international Tournament in Aix en Provence this morning. The players are not profesionals, just good players
Oups! You are the photographer Is Lauent Garnier your name? Thanks for telling me the truth promptly otherwise I will be insomnia . Good to see your pic style is different from Asian Traditional Style. I can't find this kind of color court in HK. We usually use single color, and add green mat for SF & F int'l tournaments. I think the sunlight may affect the performance of the player. For your photo, it's good quality, good color, good sharpness and angle. What lens do you used? Are you taken from audience stand? Have you edited in Photoshop? Wait for your photo.
Kinox, did you use RAW or JPEG? The exposure details on the 1st one is interesting. Do you set -1/3 EC routinely? Some people set Canon to +1/3 EC.
the second pic doesn't look strange at all. that's a nearly "all natural light" picture. the color temperature is daylight so the setting shouldn't be in fluorescent white. that's the worst situation that happen to photographers. coz it's a combined light sources situation. as u can see the highlight of the player is the sun light from the window. at the same time the mid-tone (skin tone) of the player is from the court lighting. so in this case. we can never correct the color to become more natural. coz once u correct the mid-tone color. the highlight color will go the an extreme situation or vice versa.
Red, thanks for your expert advice. I agreed it is daylight. What I mean the strange is not the color but the direction of light, it lightened up the upper part of the body and much less on lower body. I know it is because of the location of window now. Grateful to your analysis. I tried to adjust the color of 2nd pic, the skin tone and white shuttle & A|X logo can't correct together. Hope Kinox not mind I am using your photo to practice.
hi! Hope you could sleep since yesterday! So YES, my real name is Laurent Garnier, that's why my pics have this signature now about the court, you know, in Europe, especially in France, badminton is really a minor sport, and we don't have gynmasiums dedicated to badminton, we all have to share the gymnasiums with volley-ball, handball, basketball, rink-Hockey, ping-pong, ... A lot of gymnasiums belongs to schools and colleges, so the gyms are multi-activities, all the lines for All sports are designed on te floor. so it's sometimes mulicolor... and it's not very easy to get used to this kind of fields... Sometimes we put green mat for tournaments, but we don't have so much here... for exemple in this tournament, we played in 5 gymnasiums all arournd the city, and between 10 to 15 courts/gym ... so we had green mat for only 15 courts, in te biggest gym of the tournaments, were the best players played. about the photos, The first one is taken from a sort of balcony, just up to the court, a very good point of view ! (but i could not stay there for a long time because it was forbidden) the second one is taken from the audience stand. I only used a canon 30D and the powerfull 70-200 f2.8 L, I could'nt take pictures in raw format because I had not so much memory (Hope I'll get to HK once again soon to buy a good cheap laptop there!!) the pics were edited in photoshop, but I dit not do significant changes. chung > I set to -1/3 EV because she wears a black tee-shirt, and so if the exposure measure is done on a dark thing, the camera will sur-expose... and the skirt would have been to much exposed red00ecstrat> you're right! this kind of light is really the worst situation we can have ! AChan> I think there is too much blue in this picture ! to correct the image properly, you must select different zones and correct each zone with a different temperature (hard job ! ) I hope I have steal good pics fro this week-end... i'll see that wenesday and show you (sory for my bad english, I'm french, Hope you understand everything )
Thanks so much for Red's demonstation. The skin color esp the arms are very natural. I tried to imitate the color but failed. I think I can't achieve this at my present Photoshop level. Are you using Ekinox, it's nice that you are a badminton supporter.
taneepak, Would you pls elaborate more on "big disappointment"? My friend just approached me to buy his 2nd hand 5d. Apart from shuttle lag, I want to know any weakness compared with 30d.
light was hard, and I had not so much good places to take good action shots... so I tried a different way to see badminton... and now some action shots: more here: http://lgarnier.ovh.org/serie.php?id_album=11 feedbacks appreciated
AChan, have you tried the 5D? Is the shutterlag much slower than 30D? 5D also 3fps - you said before 5fps is better. Is the AF faster or more accurate than 30D in low light conditions?
Extreme wide angle lenses produce images, when viewed at distances usual for a normal shot, that will appear unnaturally compressed and distorted in perspective. Another distortion problem is geometric. People's heads and faces look egg-shaped when they appear at the edges, especially corners. Once you are into 21mm or wider lenses all these rear their ugly head. Even tv stations sometimes use the wrong wide angle lens. I have seen small people at the sides appearing to be at least twice the size of much bigger people sitting in the middle. If tv stations-they are professionals, aren't they?-can make such serious mistakes, most photographers will make more mistakes. Use them only if you cannot move back sufficiently or when such exaggeration is needed, like interiors of small spaces, the very tiny rooms in Hong Kong apartments (Hong Kong property developers are very good in such advertising). Another problem is technical. Wide angle lenses, more so extreme wide angle lenses, are poorer in the corners, mainly because of the need to use retrofocus design to clear the mirror of a slr. Only special design ones that must be used with the mirror locked up, like the Biogen, are good enough. Such lenses cost a fortune. Sensors in dslr, especially full frame sensors, have poorer corners, because light does not travel well obiquely through them like they do with film. Light from the corners do not travel straight, the top left corner travels to the bottom right corner obliquely. Most photographers will buy the more affordable extreme wide angle lenses with poor corners. Coupled this with a dslr's full range sensor with its poorer corners vis-a-vis film, you will be in for a shock if you use a 21mm or wider lens on a full frame dslr.
Just thinking, as my friend sell at 20% off to me. I've just tried to take few pics but not to badminton photo. My another friend who likes to take dance photo in dim light & as well a part-time wedding photographer, he upgraded from 20D to 5D last month. He strongly advice me to select 30D as he didn't feel 5D better in color & focusing speed in dim condition than 20d, he felt too sharp in taking wedding photo & portrait instead. besides, also thanks taneepak for detailed explanation.
