Early drama occurs when there's delayed kick-off hour due to restest of COVID-19 due to inconslusive result. CHN, TPE and KOR players skip this event but fortunately Bird Japan brings their star-studded squad to Birmingham. Massive withdrawals coloring women's doubles and mixed doubles draw, rare occasion in "normal" All England. ALL EYES ON MOMOTA It’s long-awaited moment for badminton fans to witness current world’s best men singles player Kento Momota comeback action after MAS Masters conclusion, mid January 2021. Then the series of unfortunate events had delayed Momota return to international scene, latest one he was tested positive prior to departure into Bangkok last January. The highly anticipated match if everything goes to the prediction, final clash will pit Momota versus the in-form Viktor Axelsen who has seized momentum in the absence of Japanese star. Axelsen displays incredible feat during pandemic era, cruising into last round in six consecutive tournaments, captures 5 titles including just concluded SUI Open recently. Before the titanic duel, Momota might face his arch-rival Anthony Ginting in semis, the Indonesian has All England poor record, never passing last sixteen round in last five editions. Meanwhile possible all Danish affair may fulfill last four scenario as Axelsen is slated to meet compatriot Anders Antonsen who stole the limelight in BWF World Tour Finals, outwitted the former in three games of Bangkok conclusion. NEW CHAMPION PERHAPS? Unfortunately Carolina Marin who rules women’s singles landscape lately decides to miss All England due to injury that she suffered in Basel and joining title-holder Tai Tzu Ying and Chen Yufei, last year winner and beaten finalist as notable absentees that delivering huge blow for this prestigious event.2016 Champion Nozomi Okuhara and her teammate Akane Yamaguchi are considered to occupy pre tournament favourite position, no impossible to create All Japan Finals on Sunday conclusion. Regular faces Ratchanok Intanon and Pusarla Sindhu have not found their stunning performance yet, still trying to recalibrate their good old form and eye maiden All England crown in this weak battlefield. Some names who could disrupt the plot for the top guns, Pornpawee Chochuwong who pushed Marin into the limit in Basel semifinal meet, Zhang Beiwen and Mia Blichfeldt. MINIONS ARE BACK Former champions Gideon/Sukamuljo start their new chapter in Birmingham and big expectation will rely on them as INA unable to scoop any title in their superior category during Bangkok journey. The Minions, The Daddies and 2018 Asian Games silver medalists FajRi will face difficult resistance from Japanese squad spearheaded by Endo/Watanabe who displayed magnificent performance to beat those top two Indonesians en route to score spectacular show last year. The Minions should be wary of possible quarters opponent Rankireddy/Shetty, the rejuvenated Indian indicating positive trend lately. JAPAN CLEAR FAVE Japan and Korea alternately skip S1000 tours plus China who still waiting the “right time” to take part international tournaments. Japan brings primary pairs to Birmingham, Fukushima/Hirota and Matsumoto/Nagahara who’ll be strong contender to continue Japan domination in this department. Who possibly can stop them in the vacuum of regular opposition? The resurgents Polii/Rahayu are considered to be major test for the Japanese plus perhaps Thailand number one combination Kititharakul/Prajongjai who showed slight improvement and gritty determination in Bangkok tour. EUROPE CATCHING UP Mixed doubles current top-three pairs decide to skip All England this year edition, automatically the competition will dip and lacklustre little bit, defending champion Jordan/Oktavianti alongside second seed Watanabe/Higashino will be pre-tournament favourite. But they should be watch out for the revive of European challengers, most notably is French rapid-rise trailblazers Gicquel/Delrue who often troubling elite pairs and won SUI Open gold medal couple of weeks ago that spurring confidence to do well in bigger stage and challenge the Asians also home hopefuls Ellis/Smith. Other contestants to follow, Malaysia independent combination, Goh SH/Shevon Lai and 2017 beaten finalists Chan PS/Goh LY. Well, not as easy as it would have been for Kento Momota if he was at the top of his form. Some struggles to cover his backhand side, a defense a bit porous and some difficulties at the net, but he made the difference at 20-20 and that's the most important for him. A kind of slackening after the break in the second game a bit surprising, but Parupalli played really well a the net and put some good smashes to bounce back and forced KM to fight until the end.
Two Indonesian Doubles (Alfian/Ardianto) Mixed (Jordan/Oktavianti) and Anthony Ginting gave a walkover in the first round. Anybody heart something about that ?
It's a bit strange. The two pairs and Anthony Ginting scheduled all three for the last game at their courts and now there is a walkover . Don't know what the reason is. Can't find anything in the net.
they (whole team of indonesia) had to withdraw because there was a positive tested person on their flight to England source (marcus gideon instagram)
Very sad. Half of the team played today ...and until now there is no walkovers f.e. in the md Round 16
That makes no sense to pull all indonesian players. Half them played today. What a mess Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It is stupid rule. So tomorrow all Indonesian players will withdraw too and if strict rule apply then all the players who played the Indonesian players today should be withdrawn too. ( edit : they all won't play anyway as all of them lost) The Indonesian badminton players probably the only players that has been vaccinated among all badminton players in the world Badminton losing more and more fans. Very few people in Indonesia and China will now watch the All England
Agree ! So someone (not from team Indonesia!) who was sitting in the plane from a flight at last Sunday was tested poitive or get the result today ?? So no Indonesian player lost today , so the last point of your aspect doesn't matter.
And all of them tested negative. How likely are they, already been vaccinated, will get infected and spread it to others.. what about the 7 positives that happened yesterday . All magicslly become negatives. What a shock. had they said so earlier about the anonymous etc, i dont thin INA team will come to allengland. Dumb.
With respect, it was literally in the tournament prospectus as well as on the UK government website about the rules and regulations for travel to the UK at the moment. The risks were known.
Conviniently, DEN team after negative test the 2nd time they all are allowed in the tournament. What a bunch of racist UK.
