This is pretty shocking indeed. I remember Lance Armstrong was given a few months to live when he had testicular cancer but he came back to compete and he's still alive. Going to Taiwan for treatment is a good first step!
Badminton: Lee Chong Wei's coach will discuss shuttler's future when he returns from cancer treatment in Taiwan https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/...-shuttlers-future-when-he-returns-from-cancer The 35-year-old Lee Chong Wei is a three-time Olympic silver medallist and 12-time Malaysian Open champion.PHOTO: AFP Published Sep 23, 2018, 9:48 am SGT KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Malaysia's national badminton coach Hendrawan will patiently wait for Lee Chong Wei's return so that they can both discuss his future in badminton. Indonesian Hendrawan, who has formed a close bond with Lee since taking charge of him in the last few years, is happy with the three-time Olympic silver medallist's progress as he undergoes treatment for early-stage nose cancer in Taiwan. Hendrawan said the 35-year-old felt something was wrong during the Indonesian Open in Jakarta in the first week of July. Just days before the Indonesian Open, Lee had put up a fantastic show to win the Malaysian Open for the 12th time at home. "Chong Wei really pushed himself to win the Malaysian Open and I asked whether he still wanted to compete in the Indonesian Open. Chong Wei still had the fire in him and wanted to win the title for a record seventh time," said Hendrawan. "I've never seen him so tired before. It was unlike him. Chong Wei left for home to find out what was wrong," said Hendrawan. "When I returned home on (July 9), Chong Wei told me that he had something urgent to tell me. I went to his house and he broke the news. I was devastated but told him to get a second opinion. "Chong Wei came back with a second opinion from another doctor two days later and it was confirmed that it is cancer. "We spoke about his treatment and Chong Wei found out that only a few countries had the best treatment for nose cancer and Taiwan was one of them. They have the best modern facilities there and most advanced medication." Two weeks ago, Hendrawan and Lee's former coach Tey Seu Bock visited him. "I'm so happy that his treatment is coming to an end. I'm looking forward to his return to Kuala Lumpur. Once he has recovered completely, Chong Wei and I will discuss his plans for the future," said Hendrawan. Tey said it was difficult to accept Lee's illness at first. "I've known know Chong Wei since he was a junior and I questioned why it had to happen to him. "He is the fittest player in the national team," said Tey. "He did not look too good when I visited him recently but now, he's back to his usual self. Chong Wei is a fighter and I'm happy to see him being so positive. He is truly an example to others." National doubles shuttler Goh V Shem said the players knew about Lee's condition and were hoping for the best. "He will always be our hero. We hope he will recover soon and be healthy again. Stay strong Chong Wei," said Goh. National doubles shuttler Vivian Hoo said all players missed his presence at the training centre. "We were sad when we found out. He is an inspiration to us and we hope he will continue with his fight. He must rest well and recover soon," said Hoo. Many others expressed their wishes too - sports officials and media from abroad, local and international fans - and all hoped Lee will be back and even challenge himself to have a shot at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
why not just discuss LCW's junior's future instead as when the time LCW go retirement, who will take over as the best single player for Malaysia team...
For his health, he might as well retire because he got nothing to prove already unless he wants to increase the cancer relapse Sent from my COL-L29 using Tapatalk
No la, not that extreme....but certainly too skinny. Here's what coach Hendrawan said after visiting LCW in Taiwan like two weeks ago.. Hendrawan: Chong Wei lost 5kg "Not much talk, weighing 5kg", that can be described by Hendrawan, national man's singles coach, for a change in national badminton champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei, when he last visited him in Taiwan two weeks ago after being diagnosed with nasal cancer. Hendrawan is among the earliest known of Chong Wei's actual situation after two checks in Malaysia before being diagnosed with nasal cancer. The most saddening of Hendrawan is when visiting the 2016 Rio Olympic Olympic silver medalist in Taiwan is the physical change experienced by Chong Wei when it loses 5 kilograms and more silence. It turns out that despite the badminton court in Chong Wei, the previous badminton court was unable to close the country's drastic change after being hospitalized. "Chong Wei is getting thinner and loses 5kg, he's just talking about important things," Hendrawan said. Hendrawan however believes that Chong Wei is able to return home at least two weeks after seeing a treatment process showing positive results. However, Chong Wei will be given enough time if he wants to go back to action later. "For now, we do not know the time needed by Chong Wei to recover and return to the court."
I will just try to correct some sentences in the translation as accurate as I can. Hendrawan: Chong Wei lost 5kg "He didn't talk much and he lost 5kgs", that was how Hendrawan, national man's singles coach, described the change he saw in national badminton champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei, when he last visited him in Taiwan two weeks ago after being diagnosed with nasal cancer. Hendrawan is among the earliest people who knew about Chong Wei's actual medical condition after he had been checked up by two specialists before being diagnosed with nasal cancer. The most saddening thing for Hendrawan is when he visited the 2016 Rio Olympic Olympic silver medalist in Taiwan he witnessed the drastic physical change of Chong Wei of losing 5 kilograms and he keeps to himself more. Even with the fighting spirit Chong Wei's displayed on badminton court previously couldn't mask the drastic change after being hospitalized. "Chong Wei is getting thinner and lost 5kg, he only talks about important matters," Hendrawan said. Hendrawan however believes that Chong Wei is able to return home at least two weeks after seeing a treatment process showing positive results. However, Chong Wei will be given enough time if he wants to go back to action later. "For now, we do not know how much time Chong Wei need to recover and to return to the court."

so sad to hear. 5kg is a lot, he is not tall and already very skinny. I don't think he had 5kg of fat in him to lose. we can only imagine what went away with those 5kg. to gain back will take a lot of work and he is not young anymore. in either case, health is very important. I don't think he will mentally give up badminton in any way. the road to recovery will be long. frankly though, given what we can see from LD, maybe the right thing to do is to accept the inevitable law of nature and move on to the next stage in life. he has achieved, earned and inspired many already. trying to continue playing professionally is not the only way to move forward.
Hope he only lost all his excess fat. Good thing is probably he will move around the court faster, provided he maintains his strength.
I dont think thats how it works. He will lose muscle along with fats. He doesnt even look like he has any fats to lose. Still he has the resources to afford the best medical care possible. Thats a comfort.
5kg is a huge loss for an athlete. He can try but I think it very doubtful he can get back to his previous level. The body just doesn't recover as well as a 26 year old
I think LCW only have 8% or less body fat.. 5kg will mostly be muscles. Health first sport second, and if he want to retire, he have give everything to Malaysia Badminton and inspired thousand/millions of his fan around the world through his playing time. Some people might said he didn't win big trophy but for most of the people who like him, he's one of the best all of time. His and LD rivalry and domination in their prime will be remembered as the best badminton era ever.
I have never seen LinDan being cheered and chanted before his matches in China like LeeChongwei did in Kuching, Malaysia last year before his final against LD. Truly inspirations and legends for all the youth and Malaysians as well. To me, he is the hardest player to beat.
Mental plays a certain role in cancer recovery I believe (and any health issues). If getting back on court helps him stay motivated and fight against the disease then it doesn’t matters if he gets back in full competition level or not. What matters is that he is driven by a goal and stays positive. Was hoping to see him plays in person at Tokyo 2020 but I’ll just be as satisfied to see him healthy hanging around : )
