Terence is so ignorant and yet making accusation with a big mouth.

My verdit is for Zhao Jian Hua, the great badminton legend.

Hi all,

1) Singapore, I believe, has less than 90 per cent ethnic Chinese although majority of the population IS Chinese.

2) I'm Singaporean, Chinese and FEMALE and I detest that talk abt the 5Cs. =P

3) Bbn, if your stats are correct, US$2000 for three days a week isn't a measly sum - esp if it's only a part time job.

4) Zhao Jian Hua is a family fren of someone whom I've known for 20 years.

5) He seems like a really nice guy, according to what I've heard.

6) He has an adorable kid.

7) I WANT BADMINTON! WHAT AM I DOING HERE IN THE STATES???????

2) There was a common joke a few years ago about the criteria needed to attract S'porean girls. One needed the 5 "C's". It described how materialistic they were.

Just to put the record straight, about 70% of Singaporeans are of Chinese origin, 20% Malays (fomerly from Malaya now Malaysia, and Indonesia) and 9% Indians (mostly migrants from southern India) and about 1% Eurasians (inter-marriages between locals of different ethnic groups and with Europeans). With good education comes wealth, in the sense that the educated is better equipped to get ahead in society. Having said this, the first migrants were mostly illiterate and therefore had to engage in hard labour like coolies, construction workers, manual and plantation labourers, etc. And a few of such thrifty migrants later became entrepreneurs and risk takers and carved a name for themselves as philanthropists, especially for education. Many migrants continued to send money to their families back home. Some of the Chinese men married local Malay and Indian women, having been separated for too long from their wives in their home countries. As as result the men and women are assimilated into each other's culture and they are known variously as "Babas or Peranakans". Through the passage of time, the linguistics of such families changed to a mixture of local Chinese dialects of the men and Malay. Sorry for digressing.

The 5Cs, which include the craving for Condo (property), Car and Credit Card indeed reflect the materistic nature of an affluent society in a modern state, Many young people clamour for these and had to work hard to acquire them and may perhaps miss out on the other more meaningful things in life (like enjoying a game of badminton?) However, with better education and consequently better earning power, a couple's combined income will make such goals achievable. The more difficult it is to obtain something, like a car, which reputably is perhaps the world's costliest in Singapore, the more young people yearn for it. But as young people mature over time, a more balanced outlook begin to set in, hopefully. To a certain extent, it is the environment that propels them to take certain action and influence their decision. I'm sure we can find samples of this in other urban societies as well.
As for the young Singaporean male, he had to work even harder since he had to commit an extra 2 1/2 to 3 years to national service when he is about 18 years old! At work he will lose out to the ladies initially, both in terms of pay and experience.

It is a well known fact that the Chinese coaches command a much higher fee in Singapore than those from elsewhere. The perception is that they are better since China has produced traditions of world-class players and her selection and training process is reputed to be thorough and demanding. The hard-working professional Chinese coach here can certainly earn a good income and achieve the 5Cs over a period of time and according to his priority. The rigorous training by the Chinese brought good international competition results which in turn provided the more committed and hardworking coaches a good living. Simple logic, eh?

I wonder where Terrance is?? Hidiing somewhere?

It seems like society nowadays are envy and/or jealous of the more successful person. Most likely due to insecurity of themselves. Let's hope that Terrance was just jumping to conclusion and have now learnt something here.

I think if one knows the amount of hard work a person has to put in in order to be a world class badminton player, they will understand why they demand to be well paid. We have weekend and vacation when we went to school, badminton player doesn't get these luxury. If they don't train, it shows in their games.

I was surprised to find out Tony Gunawan only charge $50 US per hour for lesson, regardless how many people. That is definitely cheap for lesson from an Olympic Gold Medalist.
