The other day, I was flipping through a local monthly sports overview newsletter, and one of the first few pages had a feature called "By The Numbers," which is trivial facts of information. Look at the atrocity I found: Phil
For me Badminton will be well known if it is shown on CNN Sportscenter . How can that person do 3416 pushups in 1 hr? Thats amazing.
14 feathers in a shuttle? Did my eyes just play a trick on me?? Counted the feathers on my shuttle 3 times after reading that article!
I think it's ABC or NBC, anyway it's the one with the peacock for a logo. If you are in the Boston area and you watch the intro to their sports segment report, you will see clips of badminton. Just saw this the other day and was quite surprised.
Good catch, Joanne. I think that's Phil's intent. And this is from a Sports paper. Isn't that a shame.
feathers Hello Folks, My production manager just pointed this site out to me and noted comments made about a year and a half ago about the number of feathers on a shuttlecock that was noted in our "By the Numbers" feature. I'm submitting some excerpts from the internet to indicate where that information was retrieved from; however, I will admit, that most information indicates that indeed, 16 feathers is the norm. Thanks for reading. 1. Principles 4.Having regard to the principles: 4(a) General Design4(a)(i) The shuttle shall have 14 to 16 feathers fixed in the base. 2. Quinte Sports, glad to see that you came to give a response. indeed the correct number of feathers in a feather shuttle is 16. not 14 as some source have indicated. perhaps you can post a correction in your publication with a picture of a real feather shuttle. if you need a pic, let me know.
lol, Hello Kwun. Sorry it took 15 months. Didn't know this site was here. To be honest, I don't believe anyone knew the difference other than the odd badminton player. As this forum indicated, even some of your avid players had to count the feathers before they knew for sure. We'll be doing a lot of badminton coverage over the next couple of months. I'll make sure we mention that fact in the story. Please visit our site at www.qsr.ca to view all issues we've done. I think you'll see some nice improvement since we started. Thanks for your response. Dave Elmy Publisher Quinte Sports Review
I did not take the time to consult the current laws of badminton. I believe in older badminton rules book, it states that a shuttle can have either 14 or 16 feathers.
Hello Viver, You're right. In fact most rule state 14 to 16. The only exception I found was the official number for Olympian badminton which was specifically 16.
Nope, I'm quite sure when I sat my coaching exam the laws clearly state 16 feathers and they also give a tolerable weight range for the feather shuttles probably to take into account the slight differences in individual feather size and the amount of glue used in each one since these are the two variables which can be measured exactly least of all.
