There's a surprise stuff in MS category where the reigning Olympic Champion Chen Long skips the upcoming Asian Leg, in the absence of Chen paves the way for Shi YQ to get seeding position there. Chen will lose valuable point of January event as the kick-off tournament for XXVI BWF World Championships qualification period.

Bombshell as China not sending shuttlers to Bangkok
    Wednesday, 30 Dec 2020
    https://www.thestar.com.my/sport/ba...ell-as-china-not-sending-shuttlers-to-bangkok

PETALING JAYA: With just two weeks to go, the much-anticipated resumption of the World Tour in Bangkok has been dealt a massive blow. The unprecedented three-tournament series which comprise back-to-back Thailand Opens from Jan 12-17, Jan 19-24 and the World Tour Finals from Jan 27-31 will lose some of its sparkle with China pulling out all their top players.

The Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) have withdrawn their team after failing to get clearance to leave the country from their government due to emerging new Covid-19 strain worldwide.Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT) president Patama Leeswadtrakul said they understood China’s predicament.

CBA were eager to send their shuttlers but their authorities have barred their citizens from travelling out from the country.

“The CBA had confirmed their hotel accommodation and flight tickets already, the players were supposed to leave for Bangkok next Tuesday, “ said Patama as stated in the local sports portal siamsport.co.th.Except for reigning Olympics men’s singles champion Chen Long, a total of 20 shuttlers had been entered for the Bangkok showdowns, comprising six singles and seven doubles pairs.

    ===================================================

    - BWF : The show must go on as planned.
    - For China players : BWF world ranking will be plummeted once when BWF unfreezed WR on 2nd February as consequences to skip three top-tier tournaments (S1000).

Yup, CHN players aren't the frontrunner in men's category.

No CHN... this only means that Praveen/Melati will win the tournament :)

looks like Yuta and Arisa will be out of XD quite quickly in this tournament; They've never won Tan and Lai.

I hope not, they really need points to join to HSBC World Tour Final. They are at rank 3x now.

By the way, I saw two draws. In both cases, Ginting will meet Momota at the third round if they won first two days

That means Ginting or Momota will not have enough points to join WTF, if they beat their opponents twice.

In the worst case, both could miss out WTF if the results were 1-1.

I hope BWF have a logical solution because WTF will miss out many good players if everything goes this way.

Forcing World Tour Finals 2020 happens in January 2021 (only 9 tournaments counting) is completely absurd.

I just hope WTF won't end up like Denmark Open 2020 - no stars, attraction or hype.

It’s between that and no WTF final at all. Having a subpar tournament is still better than no tournament.

Momota strucked down by Covid-19 and the whole Japan squad will not travel to Thailand.

Its just series of events that have befallen KM since 2016.
