Few pairs skipping the India open to preserve themselves for the Premier Super series in Malaysia the following week

    • WS: TTY, SY, HBJ not registered, which is a shame as they are great competitors.
    • MS: CL, LD, and Shi Y not registered. No surprise here.
    • WD: Most affected category, the defending champions MM/AT, Juhl/CP, ChenQ/JY, and LUO/LUO are skipping the tournament
    • MD: Pretty much a full draw which should make for an exciting competition
    • XD: Ahmad/ N; Pet/Ped, Jordan/S skipping this tournament

Axelsen has a solid chance of taking MS and I can see Marin coming back very strong after the All England disappointment if Sindhu/Saina don't overpower her on home ground.

i wonder how many int'l umpires/officials will go (not including bwf referee's). it's not a favorite destination for them, especially when they have to pay for their own airfare. the last couple of india gp gold's & ss's i saw had no int'l technical officials.

    Not easy.
You have to start officiating from small events to local to district to state to national and then international level.

the bwf referee & deputy referee's travel expenses are paid by bwf, plus a per diem from the tournament organizer (around $60 per day, depending on the country). there is no salary or hourly compenation. they are selected by bwf for the tournament.

a 't.o.' (technical official, umpire) pays their own airfare. the tournament organizer provides the hotel & a per diem (around $40/day, depending on the country). the tournament's federation sends out invitations to all other federations seeking t.o.'s from around the world. a tournament usually gets 4-6 foreign t.o.'s to volunteer. the rest come from local/domestic locations. so, as in india's case it seems like it is hard to get foreign t.o.'s to come.

foreign t.o.'s have a different per diem rate than domestic t.o.'s... again, depending on the country the tournament is in.

line judges are volunteers 99% of the time, depending on the tournament. in higher level tournaments (gp gold and above) they are required to attend a training session.

referee's, t.o.'s & line judges do it for the love of the sport.

the pay for other tournament personnel depends on the federation hosting it.

to become a t.o. contact your nat'l badminton federation. some countries make it possible for t.o.'s to move up to higher tournaments quicker than others, out of desperation. after you gain a lot of experience being a t.o., you can apply to bwf to become a referee.

it's a looooong and costly road.

Depending on how free I am, I'll be there few times since our good old siri fort is just 20km's away. If not for the tournament, atleast to grab the bg80's from sunrise stall since everyone seems to be out of stock everywhere in the city.

Gabrielle Adcock registered in Women Doubles. Her terrible low serve rate will be less of an issue in that discipline

Jan O Jorgensen and Lee Chong Wei dropped out of the tournament. Pretty underwhelming draw in MS

Excitement will never end even if some of the top MS players withdraw. I feel excited to watch a week long further non-stop badminton which is what we need . We respect the decisions made by some of top players. Their reasons are valid . They need to take rest for the upcoming SuperSeries premier tournament.
