    This is not the main reason for the cancellation of the German Open! In Germany, every federal state has the power to decide whether or not to approve entry. The state of Saxony (Leipzig, where Liverpool should play) has refused a special permit for Liverpool FC. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia (Mülheim, where the German Open should be) has issued a permit for all players and officials in the German Open. However, players from countries with the new corona virus such as England, South Africa or other areas heavily affected by corona must present a negative corona test that is not older than 72 hours when they enter . This was extended by the organizers in the hygiene concept for the German Open to all players in order to obtain approval for the event. Then every player and official would be tested again the day before the tournament and several times during the tournament. This concept also applies to the Swiss Open, which is held one week in advance. As of today, Switzerland is hosting the Swiss Open, although the number of infections there is about twice as high as in Germany. The main reason for the cancellation of the German Open is therefore not Corona - the tournament could have taken place - but the financial risk for the operating company, which was to organize the tournament on behalf of the Badminton Association. Tournaments should not be happening anyway at the moment regardless of the reasons for cancellation. There is currently not a level playing field amongst players due to covid and not to mention... there is a global pandemic.

    Now, due to the unpredictable developments related to the spread of the virus worldwide and the risks and limitations this brings with it, the YONEX German Open will not be able to take place in 2021. This decision was made by the Vermarktungsgesellschaft Badminton Deutschland mbH (VBD), which is responsible for running the event on behalf of the German Badminton Association (Deutsche Badminton Verband – DBV).

    “We have examined various scenarios with regard to the feasibility of the tournament, in order to have a comprehensive risk-analysis, which includes financial concerns, as well as a number of other aspects. Ultimately, we were forced to accept that a cancellation of the YONEX German Open 2021 is the only option”, explained Thomas Born, one of the VBD’s two Managing and also President of the German Badminton Association. “Making this decision was extremely tough for us, however, the financial consequences, resulting from the current adverse conditions, are too great for us to bear. The VBD has already suffered severe losses due to the pandemic”, Thomas Born went on to say.

    ===============================

    COVID-19 pandemic plus of course financial problem.

    We'll wait the fate of March tours further development in coming weeks.

    The financial risk is raised because of COVID right?

    Yes, this statement is essentially correct. In my post I referred to the previous post by a user that it is logical that a badminton tournament has to be canceled if a large football club is not allowed to enter.

    And the "large football club" cannot enter because of... covid. Which is the same reason the tournament is cancelled. But yes, we got there in the end!

    So all other sports are going on as normal again, but badminton should stop and be left behind? Corona will be around for a long, long time still. We can't just wait any longer, we have to work around it and live with it. Yes, it's a pity when some players or countries can't travel due to restrictions but we can't just wait, they will catch up soon enough.
