DD-Sports to broadcast World badminton championship

Hyderabad: Doordarshan will broadcast live the World badminton championship, to be held at Gachibowli stadium here from August 10 to 16.

The 7-day sporting event that would see participation from leading shuttlers in the mens and womens sections from around the globe and would be played in five categories will be broadcast live over Doordarshan''s DD-Sports channel.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on coverage of the event was signed by Badminton Association of India (BAI) president V K Verma and Doordarshan Director General Aruna Sharma here.

"Being the host broadcaster its definitely a big challenge and a great opportunity to be associated with such a big event before the 2010 Commonwealth games. The telecast would be on par with international standard with nine video-cameras on a single court," Sharma told reporters.

Declining to comment on the expected revenue generation by broadcasting this event, she said "We will be giving signals to countries like Malaysia, China and others on rate card arrangements."

To a query, Sharma said the issue on quality of match commentary has been addressed at and this time it would be done by commentators from international panel.

Top shuttlers from mens and womens sections from Malaysia, China, Denmark and other countries have confirmed their participation in the event, V K Verma said.

A total of 57 players would clash out for top honours under five categories that include mens singles and doubles, womens singles and doubles and mixed-doubles, he said.

    That's a bit sucks..

..i recall during the 2007 WC, Vision1 broadcasted the WC from Day 1. It was also non-stop coverage. Complete with in-studio coverage by Susy Susanti, Sigit B. and other ex-baddy players...[Paling sip deh!]
I wonder why they're not doing that this yr??...

Great news ,if it's true that Astro will broadcast from day 1. :p
I dun mind to pay the increase of RM12 per month for the sports channel. ;).
Cant afford to miss my weekly EPL matches plus Champions League. plus we get to see almost all if not all of the badminton Super Series :). I bet some baddy fans is dying to get Astro just for the sports channel..hehe:D

I went thru the WC shedule and I think the TV court should be Crt 3 as most of the IND players are on this court..:) which means we will get to see both LD and LCW play on the 1st day of action. Can't wait for the action to start....

Nowadays, as players are almost of the same standard, some matches are very interesting from round 2 onwards and we only got to watch them at semi finals and finals.:D
