Germans complain about Chen Yu’s withdrawal

BIRMINGHAM: A formal complaint to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) is to be made by the German Open tournament director Boris Reichel about Chen Yu, the world number six from China.

Last Sunday Chen Yu withdrew from the final of the German Open in Mulheim, which he was due to play against his Chinese compatriot Lin Dan, the world number one, claiming he had a bad knee.

But a week later, Chen completed an All-England final against Dan, apparently without discomfort, having won four matches during the week.

“Chen made a show of climbing down the stairs at our tournament, and three days later he was jumping quite normally,” Reichel alleged.

“I am looking at it with the eyes of a coach, because I am also co-trainer of the national team,” Reichel emphasised.

“But from an organiser's point of view last week it was a tragedy because we staged a final with 2,000 spectators and TV – and no men's final.

“We were surprised that Lin Dan came to play a three-star tournament, but when we got the message that Chen was injured and couldn't play him in the final it was a catastrophe.

“He said it was an injury he got in practice in the morning. In that situation we don't say anything about it. But we will complain to the BWF, and it will also be in the report of the referee.” – AFP

China made themselves look like bad guys and do no favour to promote badminton in Europe.

Conspiracy Theory: There is a possible but unlikely explanation - Chinese officials were trying to manipulate their players' world rankings. If that's the case, however, it should be LD who concede a WO because CY needs the WR points more to boost his ranking while LD is having a comfortable lead, unless the Chinese officials prefer LD, BCL and CJ (or CH) to remain in Top-3 among Chinese players. That's why I don't think this theory makes too much sense.

Doesn't matter what's the story behind the walk, if it's fake injury then is not good for this sport. I understand there is gray area in determining real or fake injuries as player can pretend to be injured during examination. However, there are many rules WBF can put in to prevent this thing from happening in the future, really not that difficult to figure out as medical examination is only one of the aspects. In Chen Yu case, it's so obvious so consequence should be imposed even after the event else you can bet the same thing will happen on Swiss Open again.
German Organiser did the right thing to protest and hope WBF will do something.

There's no way LD can be the one to concede a WO because then he will have to play like injured in AE and looking at his draw, even if he got past Roslin he wouldn't get past Sony.In fact if he had played the GO MSF, he probably would have lost to Roslin since their match was so close. Playing one extra match can mean a loss instead of a win when winning is down to the margin.
LYB will want LD to pile up his RP so that there's enough insurance for him to stay in the top 8 or maybe the main draw should he be injured and out for 6 months. Can you imagine if LD had to go through what WCH is going through right now?
CY is playing the role of a slave , just like CH before except there's no need for match orders because LD will always beat him (flat) whereas LD fears CH.
    So nothing free for CY.
In any case, if the knee injury was so bad CY had to skip the GO MSF, he wouldn't have gotten past CJ at all.
But I really don't know what is worse: no MSF or the lowest quality MSF played as a formality like yesterday's which was a waste of time.
To LYB , winning is what counts, even if it means he will be remembered as the winning coward.
