Cricket takes up to 8 hours worth of time with constant running up and down, not to mention the crazy jumps and arm spin to bowl, so it's not exactly as relaxing as many people think.
and playing under the hot sun isn't enjoyable either.....however cricket is still boring....and I wonder what so nice bout golf either....it's not an olympic sport but what so enjoyable in watching it?
You're kidding right? That's like saying squash and tennis have no difference because you use racquets to whack a ball in both sports.
It's like saying badminton seems to have little difference with tennis except the way you swing. Duh!
no bowling is not in the olympics....they should cut tennis and put in squash...tennis stars don't give a damn bout the olympics and why both baseball and softball in the olympics?
baseball and softball are different sports... well the same but i think softball is easier... the ball is bigger and the distance between the bases are shorter so its a varation of baseball... but i don't recall football being in the olympics....
softball is basically baseball for girls because american's don't think females can preform at the same level. The ball is easier so the chances of hitting the ball are much high and with the increased mass/size of the ball it has to be thrown underhand. This, however, does nothing in terms of speed. I have seen pitches lug a softball at 90+mph. The bases are indeed closer, think of high school baseball compared to real baseball.
Why? More people play bowling compared to discus, shotput and javelin throwing combined. Bowling at the elite level is also very taxing physically and mentally. I guess any sport will appear stupid or boring or both to a non-fan. Take for instance cricket. If you're not a fan you would say it's boring to watch but a couple of hundred million Indians, Pakistanis and Fijians will disagree. Instead of removing sports, I'd say just add some more. Of course this would not be possible from the financial side of things.
On the contrary, you make no money representing your country and even if you do it will pale in comparison to on the professional circuit. Representing your country is more of a thing of pride. As for football (the one played worldwide), it will be a scandal if it wasn't an Olympic sport - more than a billion people in the world follow footie on a regular basis than they do of athletics or basketball for example. As for American football - they only kick once or twice but runs with the ball in their hands all the time.
We need to respect each sport, as we can't say, "since I don't like it or even don't understand it", then it's not a good sport 100%. Even if certain sport requires less muscle or power or any nature build less than another, does not mean it's should be a laugh stock. To me, any sports deserve to be in the Olympics, as long as it's playing in a healthy way and have a fairly popular fan base. I know that's impossible to invite all the sports into the Olympics, due to a lot of reasons, but I only say, "every sport deserves a spot, just the cruel reality eliminate so many due to reasons". So, everyone deserves to be on the big stage.
the olympics only allow 28 sports i think.....but why softball and baseball ? same sport using different ball and considered 2 diff sports....put squash in as well!!!! that way M'sia can win a gold
Cricket boring? Try to tell that to the Indians, Pakistanis, and Sri Lankans and they will think you are from another planet. To these peoples, especially the masses, cricket is in their blood. India alone has a population of 1.2 billion, and if you include Pakistan, Bangladesh (another cricket-crazy country), and Sri Lanka, that is another 300+ million people. Even their governments foreign affairs policies are sometimes sensitive to cricket.
I initially thought baseball was quite boring but it's not. I've been watching the anime Major ( http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4115 ) recently and it sparked my interest in wanting to know more about baseball. There's lots of strategies / techniques invovled in baseball. For example, the pitchers have a variety of ways to throw the baseball to the batters.... it's not as simple as you think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pitches
My colleague, an avid India cricket team fan, said in India cricket is the national sport - somebody must've played the game at least once or twice in their lifetime. The industry and work in the nation stops for nothing but wars and cricket - they'll purposely shut down just so that they can catch that match. You made a great point about the number of people following it, not to mention the Aussies, English, South Africa etc.
