    Another excel spreadsheet is created; this one is to track down the world ranking points (results since 2 May 2011) toward the London 2012 Olympics.

    The file ‘2012 London’ is in: http://www.mediafire.com/?mf3pzz2rt9p31

    The Sheets are protected without password as I’ve used array formulas that can be easily messed up unintentionally.

    A few shortcut keys are assigned for the following tasks;
    Ctrl-u – to unprotect the sheets,
    Ctrl-p – to protect the sheets,
    Ctrl-r – to update all the sheets according to the ranking points (same function as the ‘Sort’ button on the first sheet), and
    Ctrl-c – to update all the sheets according to country and ranking points.

    Please let me know of any errors and suggestions would be much welcomed.

    Write this to IOC. legal@olympic.org ;)

    Hi,

    I have noticed that China Badminton Association is doing something un-sportsmanship in badminton world.

    Since 2008 olympics, the have many instances manipulating the games and causes world audience to get dissapointed.

    It may not be match fixing but this is not professional for fixing players.

    Please boot them out of the next olympic to tell them that 'no politics' is allowed in badminton.

    thanks and do pass to the relevant authorities to take action.

    the calculations were based on BWF's rules for team events. some players can earn 7000+ or even 9000+ points by losing every single sames they played. on the other hands if you dont have a world ranking before the start of the tournament, which is quite easy for the new double pairs, you may be awarded 2 (YES TWO) points even you won all your games by 21-0!

    hi
    If you're interested, I've written a program which determines the current qualificants after the newest BWF World Ranking list.
    You can find it here: www.renzo.ch/olympics.php

    Do you propably know whether there are 38 or 64 quota in singles, because as I've read there are 38, but BWF writes on the tournament modus that there are 16 groups at 4 players. (=64?)

    It’s still early day but based on the current rankings, no countries achieved the maximum quota (3) for the single events.

    Countries with 2 qualified are;

    MS - CHN, KOR and JPN,
    WS - CHN, TPE, KOR and JPN,
    MD - CHN, KOR and INA,
    WD - CHN, KOR and INA,
    XD - INA, TPE and CHN.

    The next one down is Denmark qualified for all 5 events with 1 each.

    It's a good chance that both JPN and TPE will be among the medalists along with the usual suspects.

    for the singles there are 38 places from the ranking lists, then add the min from each continents, wild cards from the host etc. this will not add up to 64 in the draws thus some of the seeded players will have a bye for the first round.

    Well on the website of BWF there is written: The Badminton Competition will be held from Saturday 28 July – Sunday 05 August 2012 and 172 competitors (86 men, 86 women) in the five events – Men’s Singles (38 players) ...
    thats sounds for me that 38 is the maximum inclusive continental and "wild cards".
    The grouping system is made for 48-64 players. So there are 3 or 4 players per group. Otherwise with 38 there are groups with 1 and others with 3 players...

    emm, you may be right. i seem to remember read somewhere that there will be round robin rather than eliminations for the earlier rounds.

    updated with US Open results.

    It’s starting to get more interesting as a few nations sent their big guns to the US open for some easy points, and succeeded. One nation, Japan seems to take the 2012 London very seriously.

    From the latest rankings Japan has;

    1) MS at 2,
    2) WS at 4,
    3) MD at 3 & 5,
    4) WD at 2, 3 & 8, and
    5) XD at 4.

    Force to be reckoned with, indeed.

    BTW, the sort button at the top of the pages is now toggling between sorting Rank/Country.

    Both GER and TPE benefited from their outings in USA and Canada. GER now have top 8 players in 4 out of the 5 events, with WD as the exception.

    Similarly, TPE is top ranked for WS and XD,
    No 4 in WS,
    No 5 in MD,
    No 7 in WD, and
    No 5 in XD.
