Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir just won their 3rd title of the year at the French Open SS. It's their 11th SS/SSP title now, having missed out on yet another one at Denmark.

They will have 2 more tourneys before the end of the season: defending their title at China SSP and the annual BWF SS Finals in Dubai. I am not sure if they can retain their title, given the intense competition there. It's also likely that they will meet either Zhang/Zhao or Xu/Ma again in the SF (given their 4th ranking now).

It would have been a very successful year if they were to win the Asian Games Gold Medal last month. Too bad, they lost out to Zhang/Zhao despite beating Xu/Ma very comprehensively in the SF.

Time to revive this thread again after the INA pair's victory in Malaysia SSP 2016 today.

They are still one of the top XD pair in the World and they definitely have an excellent chance in Rio this year.

They beat 3 of the best European pairs in XD: Michael Fuchs/Birgit Michels, Chris Adcock/Gabby Adcock, and Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Christinna Pedersen this week. Interestingly, the first 2 pairs beat them in their last encounters. So, hopefully this will increase their confidence!

Yes, that was a well earned victory. But even with the victory - I read in the bulutangkis portal that so many Indonesians are still critical of Tontowi. Really, is there a better option out there?

In my opinion he has adjusted well to playing Lilyana Natsir - maybe just a bit more composure dealing with slower shots below the net height especially at midcourt would do nicely.

Fans as usual expect too much from the pair! I give credits to the INA and MAS pair today....especially Goh Liu Ying, who I think was the best player on the court today! Liliyana Natsir has slowed down quite a lot while Tontowi is still bogged down by bouts of errors (like most other INA's MD and XD players). However, when Owi is at his best, he's unbeatable...even by the mighty Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei.

I do agree with you with there's no better option out there. Owi/Butet are still INA's best chance for a Gold Medal in Rio Olympics 2016. Jordan/Debby were excellent when they won the All-England 2016 but I think the max they can reach is SF (similar to Asian Games 2014).

The thread title has been trimmed to show only the players' names.
This is to bring uniformity to all the players' threads in the Professional Players section.

    Congrats Owi and Butet!!

Butet really ended her career in the highest note, Oly gold medal with Owi. Making it the 7th total overall gold from badminton after Alan Budikusuma, Susi Susanti, Ricky/Rexy, Chandra/Tony, Taufik Hidayat, Setiawan/Kido
    .
President Jokowi, Sport Ministry and PBSI already discussing an additional very "special" bonus for Owi/Butet for treating us with gold on our Independence Day. On top of the already promised $600,000 they will receive from Sport Ministry & PBSI, $24,000 yearly lifetime pension, bonuses from their clubs Tangkas and Djarum respectively, bonus from sponsors, house, car, they are looking to make more than a million dollar each with this victory.

Their coach Richard Mainaky and assistant Nova Widianto will receive USD100,000 and 50,000 respectively from PBSI alone. Nova was playing alongside Natsir to earn a silver in Beijing 2008 and now still standing beside Natsir as their assistant coach when they won gold in Rio.

6 years ago i created this thread.. and yesterday they won OG Gold Medal. Feel happy for them, honestly judging from their perfomance for the past few months i didnt think most Of INA fans are giving a big hope for them tho. Lilyana Natsir has confirmed her status as the best XD players at the moment with multi SS/SSP titles, 3 World Titles, one OG silver and gold medal respectively. Congratulations once again Tontowi Ahmad/Lilyana Natsir
