Following the decision by BWF Council in November 2017 to adopt a 16-team competition it was agreed that as of 2021, the World Team Championships (Sudirman Cup) format will become two stages: a Continental qualification stage and a Finals stage (contested by only 16 teams).

TO TAKE EFFECT AS OF 1 JUNE 2019 (AT CONCLUSION OF BWF SUDIRMAN CUP 2019)

Table D – Table showing points to be awarded to the finalists in the BWF World Team Championships (Sudirman Cup Final Stage) based on their ranking in the Competition.

    3.png

Table E (NEW) - Table showing points to be awarded to the teams participating in the continental stage of BWF World Team Championships (continental stage of the Sudirman Cup) in each continent based on their ranking in each Competition.

    4.png
Note: Tables D and E are associated with the continental stage of BWF World Team Championships 2021 (continental stage and final stage of the Sudirman Cup).

From 2021 on,Sudirman Cup has Two Stages:
Continental Stage:Continental Mixed Team Championships & Qualification for Sudirman Cup Finals
    Final Stage:BWF World Team Championships

IMHO, Sudirman Cup Final Stage should be named BWF World Mixed Team Championships, with Thomas Cup Final Stage named BWF World Men's Team Championships and Uber Cup Final Stage named BWF World Women's Team Championships.

BWF World Team Championships should be included:
BWF World Men's Team Championships (Thomas Cup Final Stage),
BWF World Women's Team Championships (Uber Cup Final Stage) and
BWF World Mixed Team Championships (Sdirman Cup Final Stage).

For implementation in 2021 – To replace existing clauses:

    World Team Championships (Sudirman Cup)

    9.0 – Format

The Competitions shall be held in two stages – a continental stage and the final stage (the Tournament), known as the “Sudirman Cup Finals”.

    Continental Stage format:

    • Each Continental Confederation shall organize a Continental stage tournament to determine the required number of qualifiers from their continent. The Continental Confederation will determine the overall format which best suits its expected team entry numbers, and will hold the tournament on the dates set aside in the BWF International Calendar.

    • Each Continental Confederation shall communicate to the BWF on the day of completion of the Continental Stage Competition a list of teams in ranking order. This list shall include one or more teams than the number of places at the Tournament allocated to the respective Continental Confederation.

    • Additional qualifiers will be added to the Tournament from the World Rankings.

The Tournament shall be contested by 16 teams as illustrated in Schedule 2:

The Tournament shall be played initially in groups, followed by a knockout draw.

Initially, the sixteen teams shall play in four groups of four, where all teams in a given group play each other. A final overall ranking order for each group shall be achieved (see diagram below).

    2.png

    Qualification & Seeding:

In addition to the holders & hosts and continental qualifiers, three (3) participating teams will qualify based on the overall strength of the team. All participating teams will be seeded based on the overall strength of the team.

The overall strength of the team will be determined based on the World Ranking list as stated in the time lines in Section 5.3.2 of the BWF Statutes.

Total ranking points of highest ranked one men’s singles player, one women’s singles player, one men’s doubles pair, one women’s doubles pair and one mixed doubles pair from each country shall be compared to determine the overall strength of the team. Where no world ranking is available the ranking points will be taken as zero.

By this determination all the participating teams will be ranked in their order of strength.

    10.3 – Seeding and Draw

Draw for the Group Play off Stage:

The top two ranked teams shall be dealt with as follows:

    • No. 1 placed at the top of Group A
    • No. 2 placed at the top of Group D

The other ranked teams shall be dealt with as follows:

    • No. 3 and 4 drawn by lot at the top of Groups B and C
    • No. 5 to 8 drawn by lot at the second position of the groups
    • No. 9 to 16 drawn by lot at the third and fourth position of the groups

The draw to allocate teams to the groups shall be conducted in a manner determined by the BWF

In all group play, the team ranking order shall be established in accordance with General Competition Regulation 16:

    Draw for the Knock-out stage:

    • The draw for the knock-out stage of the Competition shall be done immediately after the last match of the group play off is over.

    • Two top ranked teams from each group will qualify for this stage.

    • A random draw to determine places in the knock out stage (quarter finals) will be made. The top two ranked teams from each group cannot play each other in the quarter finals stage.

    • The top teams of each group will be ranked in order of their strength in the manner described in Regulation 4.2.3, based on the most recently published World Ranking immediately preceding the date of the draw. These teams will be considered as Seed No. 1 to 4 for the draw.

The 4 seeded teams will be placed in the draw as per General Competition Regulation 12. Remaining teams will be placed in the draw by lot.

I think this event should be given another 'trivial name', such as 'World Cup'

Calling it world mixed team championship is just too long and not enticing at all,
while Sudirman Cup means nothing for non-badminton lover-audience

Indeed, looking forward for this new format, similar with TUC where there's qualification round per continent to be qualified for final round.

Nothing is wrong with the name, in tennis Hopman Cup (first edition 1989) also sounds unfamiliar than Davis or Federation Cup but as time goes by, it'll be household name for world mixed team championships.

Qualification stage sounds nice. Some Asian countries might miss out.

Wonder if Thomas and Uber Cup will have similar qualification process.

How about "Sudirman Cup World Mixed Team Championships"?

No need to put "BWF" in the title. It was never there before.

Well actually the 2021 Sudirman qualification format is the same format like what we have in Thomas/Uber

Better, but obviously is too long

actually, what I really want is to get rid of those 'mixed team' words

but to differentiate it from World Championship, it was Cup instead
and for Thomas and Uber, they became Men and Women's World Cup
sspecially, because TUC goes together, the branding becomes easier as well

in a way, it is also important to emphasize the different between individual and team tournaments in badminton
So, I see that differentiation between Cup and Championship will benefit badminton

easier to be explained to badminton newbie
