    The only way..

..i see this happening and it's still possible is IF and that's a big IF, the other national bodies work together and totally 200% commit their players/schedule to this SSMF. If the national bodies and BWF don't see eye to eye or nose to nose, then no matter when or how they schedule this SSMF event, it will not come to fruition.

Thus the notion that perhaps BWF needs to go back to the drawing table and pull all the national bodies together & ask them "Are you guys in the same boat with us on this SSMF idea?". If they don't want to put their full commitment, then don't hold the event. Otherwise, we'll see the same old song next yr and the next yr and so forth..

So basically SSMF is what it is, and it'll continue to be joke, unless badminton becomes bigger with more air time and sponsorship money.

    ^^Second reason..^^

..abt more money, that also would not work. Why? goes back to the national bodies' priority and control of the players.

All those stupid sanctions ideas are useless and the people thinking of them are even more useless:

With athletes having their own doctors they can easily fake any injuries

If an athlete does not want to play, let him be, we all know how cool LD is when he doesn try - some would just come and lose in first round just so they can get out

$$, I doubt the Chinese badminton federation cares about a couple thousands of dollars

If the tournament looks like an invitational then it should be structured like one

The Super Series Masters Finals event is an invitation event for SS players only

    .
Actually it is. The Super Series Masters Finals event is an invitational event for SS players only. Non SS players do not get invited.

    BWF Ranking ratio (32 Draws)
    Winner : Runner Up = 100 : 85
    Winner : Semi Finalist = 100 : 70
    Winner : Quarter Finalist = 100 : 55
    Winner : 2nd Rounders = 100 : 40
    Winner : 1st Rounders = 100 : 25

    WTA Ranking ratio (32 Draws)
    Winner : Runner Up = 100 : 70
    Winner : Semi Finalist = 100 : 45
    Winner : Quarter Finalist = 100 : 25
    Winner : 2nd Rounders = 100 : 14
    Winner : 1st Rounders = 100 : almost zero (just got 1 point)
The players who won match in Qualifying round also got a few points.

WTA give more appreciation to the winner, if a players won a big tournament doubtfull he/she will play from Qualifying again. Luckily BWF don't have Serena Williams, she will be placed as unseeded player with current BWF System.

Look at Wang Xin or Wang Shixian who played from Qualifying after won and finalist in some previous tournaments.
With current Ranking Points System, the new badminton star can't born as fast as in tennis.

Can't compare Badminton SSMF vs Tennis Master Final. The total prize money is 4.4 million for 24 male players with Tennis while SSMF is 0.5 million for 64 players. There's not enough prize money to attract the top players.

Weird that a lot badminton federations/players don't care about world rankings, finishing # 1 at year end, SS or even world championship. Just AE or OG.

I think this is a perfectly valid point. That 4:1 ratio for winner to first round loser is absurd and the prospect of playing qualifying no doubt turns off certain competitors. However, despite the shortcomings of the ranking system, the fact remains that both the Wangs you mention are ranked higher than all but 3 of the SSMF entrants and were still not sent, even though they are not being sent to Hong Kong either.

I just realised this issue and the participants, especially for women's single, are sad. How on earth Charmaine Reid could qualify for this final event?

    What about:

    - reverse the WC as bi-yearly event as before and
    - put the Masters Championships (not Finals) in the available year (probably in between the Olympics); while keeping the prize money but limiting the number of qualifying participants based on the ranking points. (12 would be proper for the preliminary round-robin matches.)

    :)

BWF shot itself in the foot for only allowing 10 days for organizers
to prepare SSM. Next year, the last SS event - HK open ended
on 12/12/2010, it will be deja vue again....

..it's based on the SS ranking system. Plus other WS players decided not to participate. So, Charmaine got picked on.
    - That plan of WC returning back to a biennial event has been brought up recently. Check out this thread:
    http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75188

    - Even with holding a SSMF in between the Olympics, BWF will have to deal with other regional games (AG, SEAG, EAG). Scheduling is part of the challenge.
But check this out. In the past, IBF was able to hold the WBGP (World Badminton Grand Prix), which is equivalent to the current SSMF, with all the top players/pairs participating, even when there were regional games going on. Why is that??..
