An exciting season of top-notch lifestyle experiences, the inaugural Singapore GP Season, with its range of adrenalin-inducing performances and endless entertainment, is set to complement the historic 2008 Formula One SingTel Singapore Grand Prix, giving visitors more reason to stay that extra day or two in Singapore for a complete race experience. Held over three weekends from 20 September to 5 October, the Singapore GP Season is anchored by more than ten lifestyle events and premium experiences that include the Singapore River Festival, Opera Gallery’s Master’s Formula – The Artistic Drive, Amber Lounge and The Bvlgari Watch Exhibition amongst many others. Visitors and locals can also look forward to a host of dining and retail promotions and late night shopping opportunities for a complete lifestyle experience. “The Singapore GP Season will help entrench Singapore’s standing as a world-class events and entertainment capital and position Singapore as a top-notch lifestyle destination, providing unique experiences to complement the first ever night race in Formula One history,” said Ms Margaret Teo, Assistant Chief Executive (Leisure), Singapore Tourism Board. “The Season is the result of a concerted effort by the Singapore Tourism Board together with the private sector to conceptualise and make possible these exciting lifestyle experiences. We hope that the Singapore GP Season will not only enhance the experience of visitors but also offer a compelling reason for them to stay an extra day or two simply to revel in the exciting race ambience and gather their most memorable Uniquely Singapore personal experiences.” A key highlight of the Singapore GP Season is the inaugural Singapore River Festival, a week long celebration that focuses on three key elements: water, heritage and entertainment. As part of the Singapore River Festival, Clarke Quay will host a myriad of activities which features concerts on the river by international and local artistes and outdoor parties with DJs spinning the latest hits. Look out for the Southeast Asia first ever mega illusion show, “The Impossible Journey” by J C Sum, held at The Central. Showcasing the best in local talent, the 10-day Timbre Music Festival will be held, for the first time, outdoors along the river promenade and promises to add buzz and activity to the Empress Place area. This historic district is also set to dazzle with the return of six traditional bumboats which will be decorated for a special float parade that will culminate in a visually spectacular dance drama, “Legenda Singapura”. For interesting tales about Boat Quay and Clarke Quay, join the walking tours, “The Tipple Exchange” and “Of Dali, Barley and Hadhramis”. Also present international music artists, stand-up comedy shows by Jonathan Atherton, one of Australia’s finest comedians, plus a host of other live entertainment events. Master’s Formula – The Artistic Drive will showcase monumental sculptures of contemporary masters including Fernando Botero, Arman Fernandez, Robert Combas, Jean Dubuffet and Niki de Saint Phalle at two key tourism precincts - Orchard Road and Singapore River. Art lovers can also look forward to paintings and smaller sculptures of modern art superlatives like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse at Opera Gallery in Ngee Ann City. Cedric Tan, Director of Media and Public Relations, Balroginc, for Opera Gallery, said, “The Singapore GP Season provides us with a great platform to showcase premium art that we will be bringing into Singapore, to the locals as well as visitors. Opera Gallery has always regarded Singapore as its Asia Pacific headquarters and we now relish the opportunity to further establish Singapore as the Arts Capital of Asia.” Amber Lounge, the ultra-exclusive party synonymous with the exhilarating action of the Formula One race, is where race drivers, team principals, team sponsors, models and celebrities congregate to party from dusk to dawn. To be held at Millenia Waterfall, near Conrad Centennial, partygoers will be able to experience what former Formula One driver Michael Schumacher termed “…the only place to celebrate after a Grand Prix”. “Formula One is celebrating its first-ever night race in the exciting and unique destination of Singapore. When the Grand Prix was announced, we immediately knew we would create an Amber Lounge event to give the Formula One community the best place to party directly after the race. Amber Lounge party-goers were booking tickets even before the venue was confirmed!” said Sonia Irvine, Director of Amber Lounge. The Season promises more exciting events as well as a host of enriching lifestyle offerings including dining and retail promotions. So whether it is late night shopping at The Central and Orchard Road, motor-related activities like the Oris Air Asia Grand Prix Challenge, the ING Renault F1 Team Pavilion at Tang Plaza and the TAG Heuer “Racing Legends of our Time” Exhibition at Paragon, dining experiences with Michelin-star chef Laurent Peugeot at the Hilton Hotel or specially designed menus at Hua Ting and My Humble House, visitors and locals will have much to look forward to for a memorable Uniquely Singapore experience.
Having missed the chance some two decades ago, Singapore is not going to make another mistake of not holding the F1 motor event here. Two years ago, negotiations were revived culminating in Singapore having its inaugural F1 Night Race this weekend from 26-27 September. About 100,000 enthusiasts will converge on the Marina Bay Street Circuit for the three-day event, about 50% coming from overseas and millions more around the world will be able to witness on TV. Millions in the west will be able to enjoy the race during their daylight hours. "The cars will race past some of Singapore's most famous landmarks at speeds of up to 300kph. It's perfect for promoting the city to the world," said the RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) magazine. Ten teams and 20 of the world's fastest drivers will compete to make history in Singapore. Is this the first ever F1 race to be held at night anywhere? I believe this is Singapore's first F1 race, which will be on mainly existing streets instead of purpose-built racing track. There are too many firsts here including the night racing. I hope they have tested all the facilities under such conditions thoroughly. It should be a thriller.

Yes, you've just mentioned the highlights. It is Singapore's inaugural F1 Grand Prix, although we have races in the sixties and early seventies at the old Upper Thomson circuit. We tried to negotiate for one earlier, about two decades ago I believe, but we didn't quite make it. This one was thankfully given to us about 2 years ago when our tourism people found it imperative to stage the F1 to put Singapore on the tourist map. We have been behind some of our competitors for too long a time! And yes, it is the first official F1 Night Race in the world. Primarily to enable enthusiast all round the world, particularly in the west with a different time zone, to enjoy the race live on TV in their daylight hours. And yes again, our tourism people found it a great opportunity to stage the event in our business, financial and civic districts around Marina Bay (Marina Bay Street Circuit), where many of our famous landmarks and iconic buildings are found. It is not a specially built racing circuit, but at lot of work has been done to do up the special lighting that promises to equal daytime brightness and the need to barricade and fence up the entire area for safety, security and business purposes.
^^You should go down and take a look..^^ ..not sure if they'll have any FREE admission day for practice sessions (maybe Thursday??), but you should go down and have a quick up close & personal look, Loh..It's a unique experience..
Frankly, I am a little concerned about having an F1 race at night and on a circuit that is on streets rather than on a purpose-built track. There is very little open space, and if something goes wrong it can really blow up in such confined spaces. Night vision, even with the best lighting, is not on par with daylight. I am sure the drivers are more apprenhensive than they have ever been. Should there be rain, vision will be even worse. I hope everything goes well.
The previous thread on this subject has been merged. IMO the only exciting thing will be the Night element. The Valencia Street race was really boring. Street circuits are too narrow for overtaking and do not have run-off zones for drivers to take chances with, so further reducing overtaking. I agree that overtaking isn't everything, but when you know all the action happens when the cars stop (In the pitlane) then you are clutching at straws. The most exciting races this years have been Hockenheim, Spa & Monza. Hockenheim had Hamilton come out of the safety car with 13 laps left still needing a spotlight when Piquet & Massa didn't he managed to get a gap, pit then overtake them both before the end and it was exciting. Spa I think everyone knows about. Forget about the appeal and politics after the race, the last 5 laps were the most exciting race I have ever seen. Then Monza gave a spectrum of conditions and overtaking throughout the race all the way through the front, middle and back end of the race. As Taneepak says there will be more trepidation from the drivers because of this, so probably less risk taking. Anyone know the weather forecast? it should be reasonably accurate no since only 4 days to go.
^^That's why there will be 2 days of practice sessions..^^ ..for all the drivers to test, have a dry run at the course; and they'll be done at night time. http://www.formula1.com/races/in_detail/singapore_801/circuit_diagram.html Btw, weather forecast has a slight chance of thundershowers coming this weekend: http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2008/9/8419.html
rain.. So far its dry weather at night. Hopefully it keeps that way. Else wear a rayban then? hehe. it'll help in vision. If it rains, am sure some underdogs will have a chance. Night race is due to pressure from the committee; due to audience pressure. Australia almost loose it. The usual suspects will win for sure. Ferrari or McClaren? What choose you??? it's smoking hot...
Aiyah... you shd have come earlier to be a volunteer. Got paid and gets the chance to be near to the models... not Kimi.. hohoho. I want to protect my ears lah. Later cannot hear anymore badminton shuttle hits. It's a rich people event (for those who can afford to go). I watch on TV. hehe. If you are there, you will just hear the sound (gets deaf). The car will pass u in split seconds. Can't see anything. (zoom, zoom, zoom) hehe
Early this week I attended a f1 photography talk by Darren Heath, award-winning f1 photographer, at the National Library. Darren was very friendly and was more than willing to share his experience and tips with the audience. Check out his website at http://www.darrenheath.com/ Darren Heath with his Canon 600mm lens! http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/news/story/0,4136,177956,00.html
I was very happy that my Client invited me to attend tonight's F1 practice session starting at 7pm. Believe this will be the first time the F1 cars actually go through the race routes. Looking forward very much to the speed and noise of the F1 cars ps. check out this virtual video of the Singapore GP http://www.f1wolf.com/2008/09/video-singapore-street-circuit-lap-with-mark-webber.html
