Singapore shuttler Liang Xiaoyu did not get the fairy-tale finish she was hoping for at the Thailand Open, losing 11-21, 14-21 to South Korean Sung Ji Hyun in the women's singles final on Sunday.
The 19-year-old looked tired and nervous against the in-form world No. 7, who also won the Korea Open two weeks ago.
Playing in her first final on the Badminton World Federation circuit, the Singapore Sports School graduate could not maintain her stunning form from the semi-finals a day earlier, when she upset top seed and former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 22-20, 13-21, 21-17.
In the final, the world No. 120 fell to Sung in 37 minutes at the Thunder Dome in Nonthaburi.
Singapore chief coach Chua Yong Joo said: "It was a good run from Xiaoyu to go all the way to the final. There, it was a gauge of how far away she still is from the top players.
"She has the potential to be like them one day, especially if she works on her defensive skills."
Liang reached the quarter-finals at this year's SEA Games on home soil, and was a part of the Singapore team that claimed an unexpected mixed team bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year.

    Title hopes dashed for Liang

    By Low Lin Fhoong

SINGAPORE — A day after claiming the biggest scalp of her career at the Thailand Open, national shuttler Liang Xiaoyu saw her hopes of winning her first title on the Badminton World Federation (BWF)’s circuit dashed after a 2-0 loss to South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun in the women’s singles final yesterday.

Hit by a bad case of nerves, world No 120 Liang — who had upset Thailand’s former world champion Ratchanok Intanon Saturday — could not find her “A” game against the Korean (No 7), losing the first game 21-11.

With her taller opponent dictating the pace with her aggressive smashes and attack, the Singaporean was unable to muster a comeback, losing the second game and match, 21-14.

“I knew today’s match would be a fierce battle, and I was quite calm before it, but once I walked into the competition hall, the atmosphere just got to me,” said Liang. “I was just too nervous today and it affected my game as I made a lot of mistakes. I am disappointed, but I have learnt a lot here, and I need to work more on my technique and game tactics.”

Despite the loss, Liang’s achievements in Thailand were still cause for celebration for local fans, particularly with the national team hit by a spate of player retirements in recent years. In July, the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) saw yet another change in its coaching set-up, with former national shuttler Chua Yong Joo appointed the new chief coach of the team.

With the national team now counting on young players such as Liang to take the next step up for Singapore, coach Ding Chao stressed that there is still work to be done.

“Xiaoyu still has lot of problems that need to be fixed, but that is no worry,” said the coach.

“I feel she has potential, but how far she can progress depends on how fast and how well we can fix these issues. As her basic skills are not that good, that leaves her vulnerable to attacks and pressure, but I believe she can improve if she continues to focus and train hard.”

While Liang may not be able to improve on her world ranking in time for the Rio Olympics next year, she is hopeful of making her debut in 2020 in Tokyo. Liang will feature next in the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix (Oct 13-18), and she added: “My goal is the 2020 Olympics, and I have to train seriously at every training session, play every tournament to the best of my ability, and slowly become a better, more complete player.”

Liang Xiaoyu is a SSS graduate in 2013

I checked up the Singapore Sports School website and was pleasantly surprised the LXY was a graduate. Therefore her English and academics must be of an acceptable standard. :)

Xiaoyu, 19, shocks world No. 8 Ratchanok to reach Thailand final

    By DAVID LEE

She is ranked 120th in the world while her opponent is No. 8 and a former world champion.
National shuttler Liang Xiaoyu pulled off Singapore badminton's biggest upset of the year when she beat Asian champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 22-20, 13-21, 21-17 in the semi-finals of the US$120,000 ($170,000) Thailand Open yesterday.
The fact that she achieved the feat in front of a partisan 20,000 home crowd at the Thunder Dome in Muang Thong Thani made her victory more remarkable.
The 19-year-old, who saved a game-point in the opening game of the 67-minute match, will take on South Korea's world No. 7 Sung Ji Hyun today in a bid to win her first senior title.
"This is the biggest win of my career. I've played her three times before in team events, including the SEA Games, but this is the first time I've beaten her," Xiaoyu told The New Paper after the match.
"My mentality was quite calm. I didn't overthink, I just tried to play every point well and fight for every point.
"This was Ratchanok's home ground, so there were many of her supporters, but this could also have added pressure on her.
"Previously, I have made quarter-finals or semi-finals, so I'm very happy to be able to get into my first senior final. At the same time, I can't get too excited because it's not over yet and I still have one big match to play.
"I have never played against Sung, but I will analyse her previous matches with my coach."
    KNOWLEDGE
Xiaoyu spent two training stints in Thailand this year, when she trained with Ratchanok at the Banthongyord Badminton School for almost six weeks. It helped her understand better the Thai's style of play.
Throughout the Grand Prix Gold event, Xiaoyu has displayed skills and temperament beyond her lowly ranking as she clinically took out higher-ranked opponents such as Australia's Wendy Chen (72nd), China's Chen Yufei (112th) and Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong (51st).
Xiaoyu paid tribute to her coach Ding Chao, one of four national coaches under chief coach Chua Yong Joo.
She said: "Before this tournament, we had a one-month centralised training in Singapore and we prepared very well.
"Coach Ding also coaches me very well on court and we have a good chemistry. There were many times when I didn't know what to do, he gave me the right suggestions right away."

Ding also lauded his young charge, saying: "Xiaoyu played without any pressure and that was very crucial. She executed her tactics very well and restricted her opponent's chances of scoring.
"Even though she was tired in the third set, she still managed to pull through with her willpower. Xiaoyu's attack is not very good, so we need to help her improve on that, and also the variety of her shots and running ability.
"Just like the semi-final, there won't be any pressure on Xiaoyu in the final, so she needs to go into the match with the right frame of mind.
"Sung is tall at 1.75 metres, so Xiaoyu needs to defend better.
"We won't pressure her to win the gold because she is still 19. We just want to see her improve with every match and expend all her energy out there on the court."
While her world ranking may not improve in time for her to qualify for the Rio Olympics next year - teammate and world No. 42 Chen Jiayuan is ahead - Liang has set her sights on making it to Tokyo 2020.
She said: "It should be every athlete's dream to compete at the Olympics and I am no different.
"I understand that my ranking is too low for now, but I will keep trying. If I can't make it to Brazil, I will try again for Japan.
"What won't change is I will strive to play every match well, improve and give myself the chance to play with the best shuttlers in the world."

World No 120 badminton player Liang Xiaoyu aiming for first tour title

    TODAY

SINGAPORE — Slaying one of the world’s top badminton players in her own backyard is no easy feat, particularly if that opponent — Thailand’s 2013 world champion Ratchanok Intanon — is an idol of yours.

And that was exactly what national shuttler Liang Xiaoyu did at the Thailand Open last week, as the world No 120 Singaporean claimed the biggest scalp of her career with a shock 2-1 win over local favourite and world No 8 Ratchanok in the women’s singles semi-final.

While nerves eventually derailed her hopes of winning her first senior title — she lost 2-0 to South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun in the final — Liang is not giving up on her dream. In fact, the Republic Polytechnic student has decided to put her sports and leisure management diploma on hold to pursue badminton full-time.

“The biggest thing this win over Ratchanok gave me is confidence,” said the 19-year-old in an interview at the OCBC Arena on Thursday. “Before the match, I didn’t think I would win because I always lost to her. But I trained with her and her club in Bangkok for five weeks and I learnt a lot there.

“I’m not giving up my studies totally as I may change to another course in UniSIM, but I plan to stop my studies this month as I want to ... go for overseas competitions.

“My immediate target now is to win a championship — a Grand Prix or Grand Prix Gold, and then a Super Series. The ultimate aim is the Olympics in 2020.”

The Jiangsu native picked up the sport at the early age of seven as her father, Liang Huajun, is a badminton coach. The family moved to Singapore 10 years ago, where she attended local school before getting the national call-up in 2011.

The former junior world No 4 had chalked up a number of achievements last year: Top eight at the World Junior Championships, and a semi-final spot at the Badminton Asia Youth U19. However, the transition to the senior level has not been smooth sailing.

“When I was playing Asian juniors, world juniors, I was in the top eight, but when I played the Open (senior level), I would lose in the qualifiers,” said Liang, who will compete in next week’s Chinese Taipei Grand Prix. “There were a lot of players older and more experienced than me, and my confidence took a bit of a hit. When I lost I would feel quite sad.”

But victory against South Korean fourth seed Kim Hyo Min at the Vietnam Open in August, and a top eight finish at the Indonesia International Challenge a month later, boosted her morale.

With the national team hit by a number of player retirements in recent years — including singles players Gu Juan, Fu Mingtian and Xing Aiying — Singaporean fans will be looking to the young shuttlers to take over the mantle. But Liang is not buckling under the stress. In fact, she welcomes it. “I’m a player who performs better under pressure and it won’t affect me,” she said. “Even if other players analyse my game, to me it’s a compliment because it means they think I’m worth studying, and that’s good.”

And perhaps, some day, Liang can finally be like her idol Ratchanok. Pointing to Ratchanok’s historic world title win for her country at the age of 18, she said: “She is still my idol because she was so young when she won the world championship, and her strength and mental ability on court is very good. Top players like her have that winning shot and edge that I lack, and I need to work on that. I hope to be like Ratchanok and Carolina Marin (2014 and 2015 women’s singles world champion) and win in the world championships, and that is the goal I’ve set for myself.”

SINGAPORE — Rising local shuttler Yeo Jia Min achieved a double victory as well as a personal double feat at the Badminton Asia Under-17 and Under-15 Championships in Kudus, Indonesia, this afternoon (Oct 11).

The 16-year-old Singapore Sports School (SSP) student not only captured the Girls U-17 singles title when she defeated Indonesia’s Sri Fatmawate 21-15, 21-13 in a 45-minute encounter but also combined with SSP schoolmate Crystal Wong to beat Japanese duo Saito Natsu and Yoshida Rumi 21-18, 21-18 to lift the Girls U-17 doubles crown.

This is also the second time that Jia Min has won an Asian junior title - she had emerged triumphant in the Girls U-15 singles in 2013.

A relieved Jia Min said she was happy to be able to deliver the goods for Singapore as she had felt some pressure entering the singles tournament as the top seed.

“There was pressure to live up to the seeding but I just made sure I played my best in every match, and improve on each performance, and I left the rest in God’s hands. I thank Him for giving me the strength to pull through each time,” she said.

After resting for about an hour, Jia Min then partnered Crystal to victory in the Girls U-17 Doubles.

The duo had finished third in the U-15 tournament two years ago but this time, they managed to capture the gold after a 35-minute battle with their Japanese opponents.

What made their feat even more commendable was the fact that they had not played together in the lead-up to the Championships.

But Crystal said: “Even though we did not partner together prior to this competition, we used offensive and aggressive tactics against all our opponents.

“I feel very elated and satisfied with my performances, and I will continue to work hard in order to achieve more results in the future.”

Jia Min’s next assignment will be the World Junior Championships, in Lima, Peru, next month (Nov 4-15) and national singles coach Kelvin Ho said his charge’s victory will boost her confidence for the world meet.

“We are very happy with Jia Min’s achievement,” he said.

“This tournament is a stepping stone for her, and a boost to her confidence. Badminton strategy on the courts is constantly changing but Jia Min’s success here was due to her ability to overcome whatever obstacles came her way during her matches. The World Juniors will now provide the real test and gauge of her abilities against the top junior shuttlers from all over the world.

Jia Min and Crystal’s victories wrap up what has been a good week for Singapore badminton as it was just last Sunday that 19-year-old Liang Xiaoyu finished second in the Thailand Open.

The world No 120 pulled off the biggest scalp of her career when she defeated Thailand’s2013 world champion Ratchanok Intanon in the semi-finals. She then lost 0-2 to South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun in the final.

Kudos especially to Yeo Jia Min in the GS U17!

She played a total of 9 games, including the 4 games she partnered Crystal in the GD U17.

Two of her singles matches went the full distance of 3 games of 50min each. The first match was against [KOR] Ha Na Baek and the second, against [JPN] Hirari Mizui.

On top of this, she and Crystal beat Yu Rim Lee and Ga Eun Park [KOR] in 3 games in exactly an hour!

By beating her last opponent in the Final, [INA] Sri Fatmawati Fatmawati, in straight games, Jia Min had justified her GS#1 seeding.

Altogether she played a total of 360 min or 6 hours of competitive badminton over 5 days.

Congratulations to her for her fitness, endurance and fortitude!

    Rejoice in Singapore Badminton!

I hope our local fans can now rejoice that we do have the talent to match the best in Asia, even the powerhouses of Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Surprisingly, though, I don't see China represented in this tournament. Although we are small in number, we can also aspire to do our best.

So don't despair over our Singapore system and our young people, whether they are local-born or not. On the other hand, do have faith and encourage our people who are helping out in organizing, managing, coaching, officiating and supporting our Singapore badminton. :)

Perhaps watching some badminton coaching videos may help?
