SINGAPORE Badminton Open 2018 : Qualification-FINAL (17-22 July)

Is it a new thing now to bring their kids to the podium?

Some of the top pairs .. Boe/Mo, LiuZhang, LiLiu yet to win SS title this year.. is it an understatemn to say AhsanHendra has performed better than them.

The CHN MD is clueless, outmatched by the INA

At least they saved 6 match points to close the gap into 21-19. Overall, Ou/Ren are still raw, need more exposures in international tournaments.
Well, Japan wins two titles, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei and Indonesia have one each.

Goh SH/Shevon Lai edge out Ahmad/Natsir who look below-par performance today, the Indonesians have bad start in first and second game despite they slowly to catch up and level the scoreline but can't execute well at the end. Chou Tien Chen overcomes his compatriot Hsu Jen Hao and tops podium after quite long time, a year ago in TPE GP Gold and incidentally he defeated another younger teammate Wang Tzu Wei at that time.

In women's category, Sayaka Takahashi once again shows her formidable fighting spirit and determination to beat the less-experienced Gao Fangjie. The Chinese seems blank and unfocused when trailing behind in second game despite Gao leads 8-2 at early stages, easily dictated by her opponent, still a lot of things to learn for the youngsters including mental aspect. Sakuramoto/Takahata almost blow away their chance to force rubber games when Matsuyama/Shida level scoreline before they seal 24-22 then it's gone case for lower-ranked finalist in decider.

Two Super 100 tourneys will coming soon, Akita Masters & Russian Open. But, of course all badminton fans will await much-anticipated major event on 30th July.

Another embarrassment for Team CHN , going home empty-handed again, in two consecutive weeks

Three consecutive weeks, INA-THA-SGP. Totally grim outlook ahead of Nanjing WC. Can't imagine if they also fail to win any title on homesoil.

The Akita Masters and the Russian Open WTS100 events run concurrently from 24th to 29th July, which means the players have to choose one or the other. I noticed some Chinese participants for the Akita Masters but none for the Russian event.

Not unimaginable, CHN badminton is besieged on all sides, no clear favourite in any discipline.

In MS, there is LCW and Momota.

In WS, Tai Tzu Ying above everyone else.

In MD, there is INA Gideon/Kevin, the clear front-runner, not to mention a couple others who can really trouble the Chinese.

In WD, the four JPN pairs are hard to deal with, you beat one and the other one can finish you off. The CHN WR1 pair of Chen/Jia has been unimpressive lately, to say the least.

In XD, the two CHN pairs , Zheng SW/Huang YQ and Wang YL/Huang DP may be the main contenders but I rate their chances at no more than 50% as there are several pairs capable of beating them on a good day.

That's one out of five disciplines only where CHN has a reasonable or fighting chance.

Haha Hendra's face after he won the last point was funny.

Congrats to Ahsan/Setiawan.

And I don't think it was too much respect from the CHN pair.
Didn't watch the match. What happened? A bit unusual and surprising for Setiawan to do that.. He is usually calm and composed. Is Kevin's antic starting to infect him as well?

Oh no, no such thing. They were leading 20-14 in G2 and somehow they couldn't finish the match and the CHN caught up to 19-20. When Hendra finally killed the shuttle earning them the title, he just showed a bit of 'emotion' on his expression after that final shot. More like a relief and a bit frustration after losing 5 match points, like saying "Geesh.. why was it so hard to get just the one point.." before turning to his partner and celebrate the victory.
Oh come on, this is Hendra we are talking about, you hardly even noticed it. :D

Singapore has history of many unseeded players getting titles.

I just realized something. Since you didn't watch the match I think you have misunderstood the last sentence of my post.

MF commented after the match that CHN pair losing and playing not attacking in G1 and early G2 was because there was too much respect from CHN pair to the former world champion hence they didn't attack much. But I don't think so, they didn't do much attacking because they couldn't. Ahsan/Setiawan played so well with their placements and basically there were almost no lifts to the CHN pair to hit down. And after they reached match point 20-14, the Indonesian loosened up a bit and that gave the CHN an opening to fight back and gaining confidence by closing in up to 19-20 before Hendra finally scored the last point.

So I was just talking about MF comments on the CHN pair below standard performance not because of too much respect but just because they were just outplayed by Ahsan/Setiawan. Nothing related to Hendra's expression at all. :)

Anyone went to thie game?

What’s this meet and greet for only platinum ticket holders?

Can get the signature of the players?

Geez China only 4 titles..

and I cant imagine china not getting XD WC titles.. because they have 2 top seeds. Unlike TaiTzuYing or GideonSukamuljo which can be upset any given day. Top 2 both in XD, no way one of them wont able to win it,imo.

anyone thinks tht the player's kit box placement is weird? i see some players need to stretch to reach the contents

Didn't see any fast racket changes in this tournament so far due to this

Yes it's an embarrassment! Perhaps the organizers wanted to show the names and logos of the sponsors better at the expense of the convenience of the players. :(

Whilst most of the big names in MS, past and present, have won in the Singapore Open, notably LD's name was absent.

TTY is the only that has yet to lose this year. 独孤求败。

Back to Winning Ways – Singles Finals: Singapore Open 2018
Sunday, July 22, 2018
TEXT BY GAYLE ALLEYNE | BADMINTONPHOTO

Two singles players, who toil in the shadows of more illustrious peers, today celebrated morale-boosting victories at the Singapore Badminton Open 2018.

Men’s champion, Chou Tien Chen (featured image: right), and women’s winner, Sayaka Takahashi (featured image: left), prevailed in straight games but in somewhat contrasting styles to savour glory that both believe will inspire them in the future.

In Chou’s case he hopes that motivation comes as early as next week when he tackles the best Men’s Singles players for the World Championship title in Nanjing, China. The 28-year-old was speaking in the aftermath of a well-paced 21-13 21-13 victory over his Chinese Taipei team-mate, Hsu Jen Hao, at Singapore Indoor Stadium.

“This will give me a lot of confidence for the World Championships. The last time I won a major Tour title was in 2014. It has been four years – a rather long time since I’ve last won – so this is a breakthrough. I feel that I have been improving and that I can win more titles,” said the top seed who only lost one game throughout the five-round event.

Meanwhile, Takahashi – who turns 26 next Sunday – gave herself an early birthday gift, winning her third title of the year in four finals; the first Japanese woman to win in Singapore.

The No.5 seed saved four game points in a tense opener and then romped away at 9-9 in the second game to beat Gao Fangjie of China, 25-23 21-14, in 47 minutes.

Takahashi, the younger sister of Japan’s Olympic gold medallist Ayaka Takahashi, shared the story of her comeback from injury, revealing that two years ago she was on the verge of quitting badminton. However, she was inspired by her sister’s Women’s Doubles accomplishment at Rio 2016 as well as by encouragement from the older Takahashi.

“My sister said ‘Let’s play badminton together, and let’s win together’. That comment changed me. If she hadn’t said that, I don’t think I would be here,” said the winner who has also been successful in New Zealand and Switzerland this season.

haha. Ahsan should be very happy with the arrangement, as he can get to sit whenever there is a break.

which show the depth of the commentators in this SG Open. hope to see they improve as Gillian Clarke and Steen Pedersen can't cover every event in a year.
