This thread is all about technique. Though every coach or trainer emphasises on technique but sometimes we are also advised to play game as simple as we can.
My question is, to what extent technique is important and in which phase of the game we should play as simple as we can?

I think that you still need good technique to play a consistent simple game. You need the right technique to consistently hit the shuttle 'effortless' aiming for the right target area.

Without the right technique the shuttle will either go out, give an unnecessary attack oppuotunity, or hitting and reaching it costs just too much energy.

Comparing simple shots to complex(trick-)shots, even with the right technique, it is more about risk/reward. A complex-shot has always a higher risk of failure but also a higher reward (speed, deception, accurate placement).

When to play a simpler game ? When you are not pressed to play a more complex game.

If you do too many unforced error or gift too many good shots to your opponent, it is time to play a more simple, robust, consistent game. If you play consistently good, safe shots without any unforced misstakes, but your opponent is like a wall returning everything (-> Momota) you need to spice up your game (higher risk->higher reward).

    Hi there

Understanding and then able to practically apply those technique correctly in all your hitting department is one of the most important pillars that all players need to learn if one wants to improve how he play badminton. Even world class player still continue training deligently everyday in their quest to further perfecting and importantly maintaing a good hitting technique consistently.

Regardless to what extent of playing style that a player want to play, even to the simplest, you still need to apply all the correct hitting technique because without applying the correct technique while hitting the incoming birdie, no simple game will become simple to play because you will struggle to hit the incoming birdie.

Unfortunately since the quest in perfecting your badminton technique is not an overnight approach and require a lengthy training, commitment and dedication, there's no short cut to fulfill this and therefore you need to work hard thus making it not a simple task.

I think there is different meaning of what you meant about learn technique & play as simple as you can.

Technique is required to play better. Learn the basic of holding, stroke, foot walking, etc. Perfect those technique to makes you better. That is a must for every serious player.

Simple mean doesnt ignore the techique itself but play as best with whatever you got & no funny move. Normally we will see it on fun & less serious games where we would purposely doing cross net when we can simply do normal net shot just coz it look cool. Or when we can kill the shuttle with hard smash but instead we cross drop shot it. Simply mean dont do a waste move & do just simple move. Doesnt mean its bad, but there is time for that & we dont use it everytime in every situation.
