Nice article on Chun Seang http://www.thestar.com.my/sports/story.asp?file=/2007/6/24/sports/18119055&sec=sports Sunday June 24, 2007 Chun Seang: Bring on Chen Jin KUALA LUMPUR: Inspired by his recent back-to-back international victories, national back-up shuttler Tan Chun Seang (pic) has vowed to give Chen Jin of China a run for his money in the Thailand Open from July 3-8. The 21-year-old Chun Seang was unlucky to draw the top seeded Chen Jin in the first round of the US$120,000 tournament in Bangkok. But the Malaysian, who won the Vietnam International Challenge (May) and the Asian Satellite (June), is not throwing in the towel yet. “The recent wins have given me a lot of confidence. Chen Jin and I played in the same world junior tournament three years ago. He is the world number two now. I may not be in the same class as him but I hope to be up there eventually,” Chun Seang, the world No 39. To ensure that he can keep pace with the big guns, Chun Seang has been working hard to improve on his attack. “My coach (Rashid Sidek) has been focusing on my smashing skills every day. I spend about 30 minutes daily just on smashes,” he said. “My dream is to be the country’s top player. It will take a little more time but I believe that I am certainly on the right track.” Chun Seang is one of the three players from the Project 2010-12 to play in the main draw of the Thailand Open. The others are Liew Daren and Chong Wei Feng. In the first round, Liew will meet Indonesian Tommy Sugiarto while Wei Feng faces a qualifier.
Thai Open Qualifier of 'Death'??? the most 'intense' looking qualifyer group looks to be group 6 consisting of the following 4 players :- Nugroho Andi Saputro (INA) vs Kwong Beng Chan (MAS) & Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka (INA) vs Beryno Wong [3] (MAS) Apart from Saputro, the other 3 seem to be well established and I've already noticed some kind of 'fan-base' for Rumbaka & Chan Kwong Beng (CKB) at BC. Rumbaka & CKB also have some history during their recent age group tournament. 3rd seed Beryno Wong will have his hands full with this bunch... but I think he'll just have to spoil the day for CKB & Rumbaka fans. The best part about this 'qualifier group of death' is the winner gets to face Lee Tsuen Seng, 2006 NZO Champ. Daunting task but not impossible. all in all, it will be a busy first few days for qualifier group 6.
Bam Blunder I personally find it hillarious that BAM has registered Teo Kok Siang (BAM youth player) in 2 tournaments running on the same week. 1) Thailand Open, 3-8 July http://www.internationalbadminton.org/ThailandDraw/MSQ.xls (He's in Qualifier Group #3) 2) BAM's own 'National Junior Circuit Grand Finals 2007', 3-7 July http://www.bam.org.my:8080/NationalJuniorGrandFinals2007/upload/draw/U18_grouping.html (He's in Group C of U18BS) http://www.bam.org.my:8080/NationalJuniorGrandFinals2007/ TBBMBB(N)
Zhou Mi is also competing. She has to go thru qualifiers though. And if she gets thru...she will probably face Lu Lan then if she survives..she will take on Xu Haiwen. Tough Draw. I hope she gets high rankings soon. Qualifiers are really taxing.
Hayom Rumbaka will give Beryno Wong a hard time! I can't bee too optimistic in predicting Hayom will actually win this time, but you should see Hayom's physique and technique... Hayom got the height [180+cm], body flexibility, speed, court coverage, and a full range of arsenals [thunder smash, net game, cross-chops, half-smash, backhand smash, drives etc.] ...unfortunately... his completes his full range of arsenal with his unreliable unforced errors, inexperience, and general lack of coherent strategy... Nugroho Andi Saputro is not so well known outside Indonesia, but he is the 2006 Junior National Champion. He is also powerful and intimidating. Watch out for him! Note: they are both currently being taught by Fang Kaixiang, the last coach that brought Malaysia the Thomas Cup, in 1992. These 2 youngsters are part of Djarum Badminton club, a famous INA club that housed Liem Swie King -1978 & 1979 & 1981 All England Champ-, Alan Budi Kusuma -the 1992 Olympic Gold medal champ-, Ardy B. Wiranata -the 1991 All England Champ, Harianto Arby -the 1993 & 1994 All England Champ, as well as Sigit Budiarto, Luluk Hadianto, Maria Kristin, and Andre Kurniawan Tedjono...
no offense but i think chun seang is over confident or he just try to give extra spirit for him???? i read that chen jin practice smash at least 1.5 hours a day..... give me your comment...peaceeee
