ROSLIN Hashim sent World No 3 Lee Hyun Il of South Korea packing in the third round to remain the sole surviving Malaysian in the US$180,000 (RM684,000) Japan Open in Tokyo yesterday.

Roslin defeated Hyun Il, the joint third seed, 15-7, 15-11 to advance to the quarter-finals after his compatriots Wong Choong Hann and Hafiz Hashim had earlier crashed out of the tournament.

Choong Hann, the joint third seed, was expected to cruise through against Ronald Susilo of Singapore but the Malaysian suffered a shock 15-10, 15-5 defeat in the third round.

Hafiz found Bao Chunlai of China too strong and fell to a 15-10, 15-10 defeat.

Roslin will gain a chance to avenge his younger brother’s defeat when he takes on Chunlai in the quarter-finals today.

He was beaten by Chunlai in the quarter-finals of the world championships in Birmingham last year but the Malaysian has been playing well this year and can fancy his chances this time around.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s doubles campaign came to an end when joint fifth seeds Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng bowed out in the second round.

Tan Fook-Wan Wah, the All England finalists, lost 5-15, 17-16, 15-12 to veteran Indonesian pair Sigit Budiarto-Trikus Heryanto of Indonesia.

Chong Ming-Choon Eng fell to a 15-8, 15-3 defeat to joint third seeds Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun of China. It was the Malaysian pair’s fourth consecutive exit in the preliminary rounds of a grand prix tournament this year.
